Stinger Brake Pads Replacement

The Brembo pads use 2 bonded shims, whereas the Dynamic friction (and likely other aftermarket pads) only use one. The shim wraps around the ends of the backing plate, which is the part that contacts the inside of the caliper.

I bet you dollars to donuts that's where the clunk is coming from!

The OEM brembo pads have a soft liner between the pad and the shim that wraps over the top and bottom of the pad edge (where you have the copper anti-seize in your last photo) and that's what cushions the clunk. I just checked the photos from my own pad swap and they're the same as yours, the powerstop Z26 just has a single metal shim on the back that wraps around the edge now you get that metal on metal clunk between the pad edge and the caliper. That still doesn't explain why ONLY the Z26's have the complaints.

Though I have to post an update on mine as after their first track day I can't replicate the clunk anymore and on the rare occasion I hear anything it's very quiet and sounds like a normal brake function, wouldn't have noticed it at all if they were like this from the get go.

Very interesting thread, to say the least.
I happened to peruse a Genesis forum, and came across the brake pad thread for the G70.
I guess it's basically the Stinger in different clothes, with the same brake issue.
It was 26 pages long, if memory serves me correctly. My head was spinning as I was going through it.
They talked a lot about red, blue, yellow EBC stuff, which I don't understand.
I'm not racing my car, so I'd be looking for something that would work for a daily driver type of environment.
The more I read, the confuser I get....lol
EBC is just a brand of pads. Their Greenstuff pads are supposed to be an upgrade over OEM--a carbon-kevlar composite if I'm not mistaken (unless they changed it), Redstuffs are a ceramic pad, Yellowstuffs are supposed to be for more aggressive driving and maybe limited track use, and Bluestuffs are supposed to be for track use (in a nutshell).

I believe Redstuffs would probably suit you since the consensus here is that ceramic pads tend to not leave the pad deposits.

I wonder if that's why I don't hear the clunk. My hearing is shot from being young and stupid and standing in front of the speaker stacks at metal concerts when I was in my 20's...It might be clunking but I can't hear it.

Never had the clunk either. Is it during Auto-Hold?

I have no clue. My Z28's don't clunk--or at least I can't hear a clunk. As I mentioned, my hearing is garbage, though. The only important thing is my wife likes that they don't pulsate every time I brake.

No... Absolutely NOTHING to do with auto hold.

The faint "clunk" sound being described is, when a driver installs aftermarket brake pads that are slightly undersized vs OEM, there exists a small amount of "play". The noise occurs only once, per direction change from reverse to forward, or from forward to reverse.

The first application of the brakes after changing direction, can result in a (approx 1mm) shift of the brake pad within the Brembo caliper, resulting in a single, but sometimes audible "clunk" or "click"

This condition is bothersome to some people, and others don't care, and others don't suffer from the effect as they have accurately sized brake pads.

The Stingers Brembo front brakes use pads compatible with size (1001) very common.

Some aftermarket pad mfgs list then as 132mm wide, while others list then as 131.8mm wide.

When I measured my OEM Brembo pads, they were 131.65 - with a quality caliper.

I do not have the "clunk" with any pads I have used.
OEM - no clunk
Centric PN 105.10010 - no clunk
Current = Dynamic Friction DFC 5000 Advance - no clunk

20 month/12k miles update on the Powerstop Z26s ("updated" design):

I had very faint clunking and only occasionally. About a month ago, with my foot fairly firmly on the brake, I turned the wheel to get into a parking space and heard a VERY loud BAM! after that, I was getting a much louder clunk every time I switched F/R and applied the brakes for the first time from the driver front brake.

I was also getting a very faint rattling when I was moving 5-10mph on rough pavement I could only hear with the windows down.

Turns out they were related. I had the retaining clips on backwards. They are supposed to be a pain to get back on. I took the easy route when I installed them.

I put the clips in the correct way, and clunk is completely gone. I haven't driven over the spot that caused the rattles, but I suspect they will be gone too. Didn't replace pads again, didn't even re-lube anything or reapply that sticky red brake pad spray I used the first time.

FWIW, the updated Z26s (5/10/21 or later) have the wrap-around shim and are identical in width to the stock brembos. I compared them side to side. Sorry I didn't take photos or whip out a micrometer, but I didn't want to get my phone full of the brake crud that was on my hands and I don't own a micrometer.

I drove around for 20 months with those clips on backwards. Those of you having clunking issues with the PowerStops (or even other pads) might want to check that out. The correct orientation is the one shown in post #94 of this thread and it should be a bit of a pain to get the second pin in because you have to apply some inward pressure on the spring to get everything to line up.

If you don't hurt your thumb, they are in backwards. lol

Just to be 100% sure before I order front pads: Are there different ones for Brembo and non Brembo brakes, or do all Stingers have Brembo's?

Yes, there are different brakes

Let us know if we can be of assistance in helping you find a quality set of front pads.

All GT stingers have the Brembos. All 4 cyl stingers don’t.

Good to know.
I was looking on Amazon (Canada) and they have EBC red stuff.
It asked for my trim level, as a message came up that said it wasn't sure if they would fit my Stinger.
As soon as I input GT Elite, it changed and said they would fit. Makes sense now.
Thanks everyone.

These are very economical, and working very well for me presently. Only have 5k KMs on them so far, but zero pulsations or noises thus far.

Purchased in April 2023

This was the all inclusive price, to my door in $CAD - from Rockauto.com

I'm looking on the Rockauto site, you ordered the "1551-1743-00" pads for the front, but rockauto doesn't list those for the stinger at all, they have "1551-2145-00" for the Dynamic Friction 5000 FRONT, and "1551-2144-00" for the REAR (same as in your order).

The "1551-1743-00" are only $43.65 and the "1551-2145-00" are $73.40 so quite a difference but they're both the same 5000 Advanced Ceramic Line, something is up :ninja:

The only sites that list fitment for the "1551-1743-00" show 2010-16 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. So how did yours fit and where did you get that part# from?

EDIT: I also noticed the Bosch BC1001 everyone is using/recommending here aren't fitted for the stinger, but for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe (and 100 other non-KIA/Hyundai vehicles). (The proper Bosch Fronts for the stinger are the BC2117 looks like thats WITHOUT brembo brakes) (and BC2144 for rear). I think my head's starting to spin...

1001 sized pads are correct.

The stinger "specific" pads have some janky anti squeal weights attached.

I always use the standard "1001" sized pads, without the weights. They are NOT Stinger specific. But of course they work, and my brakes have always been silent.

I would love to also use generic size for the rear as well, but I haven't found them yet.
1001 = front size
xxxx = rear size

So how did you know the "1551-1743-00" part would fit the Stinger?

And what are the chances that the rear pads are a totally new design? I bet SOME standard part will fit in there...

Some cross referencing...

The 1551-1743-00 fit a Hyundai Genesis coupe, and so do the 1001 sized pads, so, I bought them and tried them, and - perfect fit on my Stinger

And what are the chances that the rear pads are a totally new design? I bet SOME standard part will fit in there...

Still searching...

Is purchasing hardware kits required or is it just a nice to have and existing parts can be reused?
For example Dynamic Friction 5000 FRONT (1551-2145-00/1551-1743-00) and REAR 1551-2144-00 is associated with hardware kits 340-21022 and 340-21021. I don't think these come with the pads.

Others should correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the hardware kits are the pins and the springs, fort the brembos at least. I personally would want to replace them but that is just me.

If the DF pads don't come with the hardware, I'd get it. Or, I'd go for a set of pads that comes with the hardware included.

your call. I am at 125k kms - still original brake hardware pins and spring. Replace as needed - the hardware kit isn't very expansive, hardware "can" be reused.
