New Stinger Recall

It's great to have an expert/someone from the electrical trade comment on this fix because it seems pretty low frills and unsafe to me with the kit provided and to trust Dealers to mess around in the fuse box. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.
I was talking with my wife this morning about all this and as arriving at the conclusion that legalities and politics, as you mentioned, may have a greater influence upon this repair procedure rather than technical analysis, I came up with one idea.

I thought OK if KIA is concerned about using a new fuse bar with the reduced (2) fuse links, thus still allowing someone to re-install the old 40 and 40 amp fuse bar; to prevent this, make a bar that will fit into the existing fuse slot, with a receptacle on the top, which only accepts the replacement fuse bar (reduced ampacities) because of a unique slot(s) configuration.

Also the middle bar which converts the slot from old to new configuration would be epoxied and permanently attached to the original fuse bar slot.
Granted, this would require two new components, but labor time of about 20 minutes or so, and zero hacking on customers Stingers. Also if KIA is concerned that this fix is not obvious enough, make the conversion fuse slot bar ORANGE!

I’m another 2018 Stinger owner (2.0T base model with AWD) who got a recall letter yesterday. I have a service appointment scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Got the mail today (first time this week), and "oh, goody", there is my recall letter. I need an oil change, so I'll schedule this and get the oil change done at the same time.

(edit to add: just called and had them order the parts for this; it will take about a week to get them; the service manager said something about "It's good that you are ordering the parts now, so that you won't have to come in twice." Apparently, by this, it seems that the normal procedure is to take your phone call, because you received the letter; schedule your visit, and then order the parts if your car shows that it needs to have the HECU fuse fubar attended to!? This pedantic, stoopid sequence necessitates returning AGAIN once the parts are in. And now I guess I'll see if this goes smoothly or not. I have confidence in James at Jerry Seiner Kia; he's always been savvy in the past.)

Got this SC196A recall notice for my MY2018 2.0T built in March 2018. Looks like recall has been vastly expanded for pretty much all MY2018 to MY2021 Stinger.

I'm going to take that repair instruction to the dealer and ask that the parts be ordered before I show up for the appointment.

This bulletin provides the procedure to install a new fuse kit in the junction box on:
• Original Scope (SC196) – certain 2019 MY Stinger vehicles equipped with the 3.3L Turbo
GDI engines, manufactured from June 21, 2018 through July 9, 2019, and
• Amended/Expanded Scope (SC196A) – certain 2018-2021 MY Stinger vehicles not
equipped with the Smart Cruise Control (SCC), manufactured from October 11, 2017
through November 16, 2020.
The affected vehicles may exhibit numerous warnings, including illumination of the tire pressure
warning light, ABS warning light, MIL warning light, a burning/melting smell and/or smoke from
engine compartment in the area where the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) is located.
It is believed that the electrical circuit within the HECU experiences a short circuit condition that
results in excessive current, thereby increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire. Before
conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.

SC196A recall notice
I guess the 2.0L has a different recall number? Mine is Recall Number: 20v-518. Now that Kia has expanded this recall to included pretty much every Stinger they've sold, I think that there are several/many recall numbers.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
After reading the recall bulletin posted by SKY above, I noticed it is for Stingers built from June 21, 2018 through July 9, 2019.

We got the stinger in April 2018.

So, why is her Stinger included in this? How messed up is KIA...????????????????????

That was the original scope, the next bullet was the amended scope which pretty much encompasses most of the model years without scc built starting in Oct 2017

They keep expanding the recall. It's every Stinger now that doesn't have SCC. Initially the recall letters were just 2019 3.3 models with or without SCC. Now it appears they've included all Stingers without SCC. So any GT Line, GT or GT1 Stinger.

This is just how Kia/Hyundai go about their recalls. Instead of recalling all vehicles that use the same component, they muck around and do it in stages based on reports of problems/fires.

SKS, thanks.

Ok. Just hate to see hacked up this way if not necessary, and as we discussed, there are much better and easier ways to correct this overfusing issue.

Hey everyone, I'm the new guy here. After going through 16 pages of this forum, I would first like to thank you all for your diligence and great advice. Please excuse my ignorance but I was wondering, could we lessen the load on the HECU by simply turning off the traction and stability control...along with obviously and as previously stated, driving it easy until the recall is done?

Howdy and welcome. Kia is really paranoid (lawsuit shy, go figure!): they even tell us to park outside away from other vehicles until this is fixed. So, the answer to your question is "No". :D The incidence is so freaking low this isn't worrisome statistically. Just enjoy the car and get the TSB attended to as soon as you can.

I’ve had mine parked inside on a trickle charger since November and it hasn’t started on fire once!

Done.

Is there a risk of using a battery trickle charger for prolonged periods of time?
If there is, it hasn't been brought up here. A few owners on here put their Stingers into "hibernation" till spring on a trickle charger.

Nope. That's the key to "trickle". They only float the battery so it's not always sitting in an overcharged state.

I thought Stingers are good for daily driving? ;) lol jk jk - to each their own :D

ah okay! haha I sound so foolish! My parents share a car and my sister has her own. My gf doesn't drive and her parents each have their own. No car sits idle for more than three or four days. Always up and about. Good to know though how the trickle's trickle trickler works! :D gracias! :D

Called the dealer last week to make an appointment for the recall work. Guy on the phone noted it, said it'd be a 1.5hr job, and set the appointment for first thing this morning. I show up and they take the car. 30 minutes later they come get me and say I'm good to go..."We have to order the parts kit, it'll be here in a few days and we'll call you back to get the work done"...??

What exactly was the point?
Its crazy cause I was researching how long it takes to do this job prior to scheduling for the recall. So when I initially talked to the guy over the phone he said they made need it all day. Which makes zero sense to me. So now I am here curious to see how long it will take. Told the service advisor I need to stay. Then he said it might be required to stay overnight. Uhm no it should not. Curious about how long this should take. This dealer has already shown some flags and this is my first time ever at a Kia dealership for work. Crossing my fingers it does not take long and everything is okay.

The job itself doesn't take that long.... the dealer probably only has 1 guy who does it and he's "busy" lol

They probably have never done it before, and they don't feel confident in their tech's ability to get it down in a reasonable amount of time. PYA
