3.3TT Misfires / Turbo Failure

Well, I finally got my stinger back after nearly a month. Found a few missing bolts after the swap, intake manifold, airbox, and one of the exhaust brackets but the dealership replaced them (How did they not notice bolts were left over?!). Also had issues with an O2 Sensor heater burnt out after I left the dealership, presumably because the O2 sensor was covered in oil and it was continuously running.

Kia is working on an offer to compensate for my time and frustration due to what was determined to be a manufacturing defect on a new car. Now I get to have fun breaking in the new motor and getting her all bolted back up with the good stuff after the break-in period :)

Ask for all the core parts. I'll buy them from you!

Great to hear Bal ! hopefully they didn't use a leftover oily hose to hose you down with taxes and stuff for the replacement ? did Kia treat you right in the end ?...Wash

I tried, they have already been sent to California then the Koreans for Analysis. Total cost of parts + labor was north of 14k

No cost to me, in fact Kia is discussing giving me an extended premium warranty and paying a couple of payments for my frustration. Hasn't happened yet but I have faith they will do the right thing in the end. I'm happy and my Stinger is working again, ultimately all that matters to me :)

Glad to hear you are back on the road in your car....that will be a great outcome if it actually goes through.

My driver's side turbo is making a police siren sound. I'm hoping to get it fixed before I end up with a blown out turbo, too. :(

Oh no! I don't understand why but all cases of turbos failing I've heard of have been the driver side (6 or 7 now). Wish you the best of luck getting a new one, I know they do have to pull the engine to swap them so it's quite an ordeal. Just make sure you do a thorough inspection and a test drive before taking delivery of the vehicle. Mine had a few screws missing (and loose BOV hose) when I got it back.

Can you please give more details. Like is it making it during driving, or at idle etc etc. Post a video if possible.

Typically failing turbos give a 'dentist drill' sound when trying to make boost.

I'm 100% sure turbos can come out without motor coming out.

Yeah, I wondered about that. I am no "car guy", but the turbos are ON TOP. Hmm!

Perhaps, they are on the side / underside of the motor and definitely not easy to get to. A dealer tech is the one that told me they have to pull the motor to replace turbos on the Lambda II platform.

Wow. Wrong aaagain. *sigh* Oh well, at almost 66 years, I should be used to it by now ........

Here are the pictures, which happen to be from a Kia tech who pulled a motor to replace a bad driver side turbo. How exactly am I wrong about the turbos being on the side / underside of the motor? Maybe there's a way to unbolt and pull them without pulling the motor, but it looks like a really tight squeeze.

I think the siren sound is made if one of the blades gets chipped or broken (happened to me on a previous Alfa turbo). I guess likely cause of breaking a blade will be if the bearings or shaft are allowing excessive movement?
Would definitely get the turbo changed quickly before it disintegrates and destroys the motor.

You're not wrong, I AM, that's what I meant. Thanks for the informative pics.

I already provided videos to the dealership, but I don't have them right on me to upload from work. It's as I described, though: it sounds like a police siren, but since it's low volume, it would at first seem like it's a police siren in the distance. I'm very hypersensitive to sounds, but since I'm somewhat experienced, I can also tell when something isn't normal. It's most pronounced on a cold start as the engine RPMs are up and the turbos spool, and it is also there when under light acceleration between 20-30 MPH.

Typically failing turbos give a 'dentist drill' sound when trying to make boost.

It's lower tone, and that could be down to the configuration (size, compression ratio, etc.) of the turbo, but it's definitely a police siren pitch for me.

I hate to say something like this outloud on a forum, but I DID poke around down there, and found two small pieces of metal sitting at the bottom of the intake tubing pre-turbo (which I promptly removed). The car is already at the dealership, but as I commonly have to deal with, they treat me like I'm an idiot even though I'm wholly more capable than their technicians when I was explaining the noise, what it means, and how there have been other Stinger GTs with failed driver's side turbos. It's a good thing I came with video evidence, because they were telling me it'll be two weeks (from Fri when I called, telling me their next open date is Oct 9th) before they can look at it, and then after the videos they said end of this week because "they're booked up". I explained the hell out of them how a blown turbo could mean much worse on them to work on and that it needs to be at their dealership ASAP, so pretty much forced them to take my car and it has been sitting at their dealership doing nothing, probably getting dirty and going to end up with new dents until they get to it . The service advisor was revving my car in the service lanes trying to "replicate" it, and I was about to smack that dumb f****r but also hoping it would blow right there just so I could laugh at him for not knowing his shit about what catastrophic failure could happen if that turbo blows. Of course, in idle, the car does not build much boost unless revved really hard, so of course it didn't make enough noises...

I think these modern day mechanics don't understand how to diagnose, they only know how to follow a computer on how to fix something. I feel like they're just going to struggle to "replicate" it simply because the turbo hasn't actually blown and thrown metal into my engine. I really hope one of them, just one, has the wits about him to follow the clearly outlined conditions in which to replicate the sound so that he will have to investigate it and check out the turbo.

LOL! That would fix 'em. Kia would have conniptions. And you'd get a brand new engine complete with turbos. You are already "in" for an extended stay, it seems; so might as well get a completely new engine as part of the compensation for having this stupid issue in the first place.

Duhhh, I'm an idiot... I also couldn't send them to the dealership because the files are too large, so I put them on my work Dropbox, lol

Really just sounds like a police siren in the distance o_O But it's definitely coming from the driver's side turbo as I had listened to it several times myself in the mornings before making that call into the stealership.

wow...that really does sound like a siren. Does it do that while you're driving too?

Per above, yes: it's most audible during light acceleration through the 20-30MPH range as there's not enough road noise to drown out the police siren sound.
