3.3TT Misfires / Turbo Failure

@bal is the car at the dealer yet? Any news from them?

Update: The service center has pulled the motor and identified a warped turbo compressor shaft (manufacturer defect) that likely lead to catastrophic failure of the bearing, oil seal, etc. Since there are metal bits everywhere from the turbo internally disassembling itself, and potential damage to the cylinders, the suggested remediation is a full engine swap and replacement of the O2 sensors. No ETA on a replacement motor at this time.

The turbo model is Garrett Honeywell 282313L100 and these are the same turbos used in the G70, G80, G90, EQ900 / K900. Price seems to range anywhere from $650 to $1400.

Wow!! a full engine swap?....crazy, glad to see that they are going to cover it. Keep us posted.

With the low miles you had I suspected manufacturing defect too. Full motor swap under warranty isn't a bad idea if you can wait. Would love to know cost of motor. Where did you see turbos for $650? Do you have pn for other side? Might pick up a set to send to my turbo builder and see what magic can be done.

Never mind. Found it

Rh turbo 28231-3L110
LH turbo 28231-3L100

Found them for about $950 each
Great price for new cores.

I think you meant to say "great price for going quad turbos". :geek:

Will let you know the cost of the motor if I'm able to find out. If the motor swap is going take more than 30 days, I may lemon law the car since this would be the 4th total issue I've had to take it in for in a month and a half (2 mechanical, 2 build quality).

Those turbos are cheapest on the South Korean sites. I was able to find one for 644,000 KRW or $579 USD at the link below. That plus freight should put you around $650.

Honestly a full swap is the right way to fix it based on the description. There’s no telling where metal bits are now.

@bal i thought lemon law was 3+ attempts to fix the same issue.

Have you inquired about a swap or buyback? This would probably be a good case for it and might be easier for all parties involved.

Lemon Law requires it to be the same problem repaired multiple times and still failing. Otherwise, the vast majority of cars out on the road are lemons, including super/hypercars

In my location, if the vehicle is out of the consumer's possession for warranty repair 30+ days in the first 2 years or 24,000 miles or if the vehicle is returned for a subsequent related issue more than 3 times in that period without resolution, it is applicable under lemon law.

Not yet, but that may be the route I take once I get an ETA on the motor swap.

Ask them about the warranty on the swapped engine. Will it be 10yr, 100K miles again?

Update: It's been a few weeks and Kia is still trying to source a motor for the replacement. Hopefully (for their sake, and mine) they can get it done before the 30 day mark so I don't have to lemon law the car through their third party. From talking to techs and reading forum posts, it seems that in every instance of a motor swap the cause has been the driver side (LH) turbo. Apparently they are doing a lot of replacements for this issue, with most of the failures occurring during pre-inspection or test drives.

I don't know if the warranty will be reset after the motor swap, still waiting to hear from corporate on that since the dealership could not tell me. Have put in 3 calls to them and was told they would look into it. Have yet to receive a call back, big fail on their part.

Will keep you all updated if things change.

The sales manager said they could not do a swap without charging me tax and other state fees and I would lose money on mileage on depreciation. So, basically a new lease minus mileage depreciation on the other vehicle as if I were to trade it in. They suggested I work with KIA corporate on the matter, so I did and have been promised 3 calls back with no response on my case.

Thanks for the update. Now importantly though, I'm sorry this happened to you and is resolved quickly

Come on Kia, we are all watching (hopefully you aren't lol).

Sorry to hear what happened. Props to you for putting things back to stock so quick!

Well, I finally got my stinger back after nearly a month. Found a few missing bolts after the swap, intake manifold, airbox, and one of the exhaust brackets but the dealership replaced them (How did they not notice bolts were left over?!). Also had issues with an O2 Sensor heater burnt out after I left the dealership, presumably because the O2 sensor was covered in oil and it was continuously running.

Kia is working on an offer to compensate for my time and frustration due to what was determined to be a manufacturing defect on a new car. Now I get to have fun breaking in the new motor and getting her all bolted back up with the good stuff after the break-in period :)

I like your attitude! And "we have morons on our team", that is the explanation for leftover hardware!? Keep them honest. Move forward.
