Kia Stinger Rear Hatch Rattle

2 days of rattle free driving so far with this solution but I haven't had a cold day yet and those are usually the worst so I'm waiting for one of those before I consider this to be a solution to the problem.

Thanks for this. I've had mine back 4 times and here in the Adirondacks of New York, I'm rattling away! Can you post any pics, some more details please?

I was having the same issue and I saw someone post about removing the trunk cover that lifts up and down when you open the trunk. I removed it and that made the noise go away. Granted I didn’t drive on the highway but I would hear that noise when driving local and didn’t hear anything. I’ll see if it went away in the morning when I drive on the highway.

pretty sure that wont affect anything but lets see

My trunk rattle is now dwarfed by the noise from my sunroof. When I don't have the radio playing my car sounds like pop corn is being popped. Open the sunroof and the sound goes away.

This just started at around 13k miles. Pretty annoying.

we have the same problem brother !!

I'm going to have to take my sunglasses out of the sunglasses holder, I keep hearing it moving around and I'm getting paranoid it's the sunroof rattling!

The only rattling/creaking I've heard at all is from somewhere in the back, when reversing into my driveway after hitting the valley gutter and my hatch flexes. As long as it doesn't appear when driving forward, I'm good with it.

Hey guys. Im not sure if it has bern discussed but I was hearing loud rattles in the back and thought it was the hatch. It wasn’t. I opened the rear doors and knocked on where the edge of the rear seats meet/insert into the edge of the interior and it made the exact loud rattle noise. See below for exact location.

I have not attempted a fix yet but I will see if placing felt tape along the the line will help. Will post result when done.

Before trying to fix it make sure it makes the noise with the door closed.

I had the dealer fix the problem with the SA322 update, but this seemed to make it worse. To confirm it was the bumpers I placed a piece of thin cardboard I found over the lower rubber. Amazing stop immediately. Drove around for a couple of weeks No noise. Then I had another idea. Maybe it is the plastic and the rubber shifting (gripping and Release) causing the noise. I removed the cardboard idea, and lubricated the contact points on the lower rubber with a few drops of push bike chain lube, and to my amazement no noise. No noise since.
My thoughts on Kia's fix is if they jam it up harder by packing, the noise go's away. But as the rubber over time wears and flattens the noise comes back, let alone the wear and forces on the latch.

I was thinking the same thing, depending on hatch use....how long would the
''jamming'' fix actually last....maybe adding a lube as stated might add to longevity....as long as the lube doesn't eat away at the rubber.

Is the sound more of a thud?
Mine also has a thud coming from the rear, it happens when the rear tires go over a bump and it doesn’t matter at what speed.
I’ve pulled all of the rear trim out and put a sound insulation on the floor surrounding the battery as well as behind the side trim.
I’ve replaced the washers as the dealer used two thin washers, and I have tried just about every mm adjustment on the stoppers.
It’s not a rattle sound or like a can with marbles in it, which I would assume everyone is talking about for the stopper adjustment.

Is anyone else having the “thud” sound?

Best guess, the performance biased shock absorbers and a a small side wall of the tires lead me to think that thud noise is all that is left after hitting a bump.

I purchased the Stinger certified used. When I brought it to the dealer I was told the fix from Kia was already installed but they would 'adjust it'. After the 'adjust', the rattle went away for a few days, then came back. It's a very annoying sound and it's constant.

I read the other thread regarding this issue and saw several DIY fixes. Does anyone have an opinion whether I should continue to bring it to the dealer or try to fix it myself? My concern is that if I make any modifications, the dealer will no longer take responsibility.

Thanks

Fix it yourself , my dealer tried 3 time and i finally added the extra ( thicker) washer and voila ! hatch rattle gone , most guys here have ended up fixing it themselves ........................be like Nike ........................

I pulled my "bumpers" again and put twoof the M8 washers under them ... big mistake! The hatch was hard to close and when it did, the hatch panel was standing almost a quarter-inch above the fender panel. Yikes! So I opened it immediately (with some effort, since the latch was under tension), and took out one of the sets of washers (leaving just one under each bolt), and it seems to have cured it for now.

I had used some very thin rubber washers before, and they had smashed down so much that they were paper thin, so I used them along with the M8 washers. What concerns me is that fixing this thump by putting the whole hatch lid under tension seems stupid. Carmakers have handled this for decades by using big fat weatherstripping, and I don't know why Kia didn't do the same.

hmmmmm good post, Plenty of self adhesive stuff around to really ''seal up'' the hatch and doors for that matter, anybody else notice the dirt and grit that accumulate inside the said oriffices I was a bit shocked after a couple weeks of ownership way back when.

Hi all,

I have a 2018 GT2 and the famous hatch rattle since around 15k miles (I'm now at 40k miles). I just took it in to the dealer for the 4th time 2 days ago for the same issue (and even the 4th time for the moon roof rattle).

The dealer has done everything KIA stated to do in their pitstop/bulletin plus some more improvisation and nothing has resolved the issue.

I'm now trying to find out if this issue has been resolved in the 2020 model. I might want to sell mine and get the 2020 model if the issue(s) are resolved.

Can anyone comment? My dealer asked his rep if the 2020 model has any improvements for the hatch and all he received was a generic response like KIA always looks to make improvements but literally no elaboration on what area or what type of anything....

Research on this forum indicated to me that the 2019 still had these issues.

Thanks!

If you have documentation on these incidents and your state has a lemon law you have a case to fight here.

The trouble with this is that if you don't have rattles you are not going to believe that the hatch or sunroof have a problem. Individual vehicles have imperfections. But as a whole production run the Stinger is largely if not entirely quiet. I'm not alone by any means, on the forum, when I say that my vehicle has never emitted a single extraneous noise in over 29K miles and 20 months. The issue is with your vehicle. And that's too bad and I am sorry.
