Kia Stinger Rear Hatch Rattle

Here’s a photo of what I did with the over slam bumpers. This is in addition to the washer/gasket kit from Kia. Yiou can see where I added the zip tie to keep the bolt at 1 inch.

Thanks, I am going to try this next. I put some tape over the contact points on the hatch, and it helped a little, but the rattle is still there enough to drive me crazy! Oddly enough I hear it more over small bumps than I do on large ones.

Hi All,

Does anyone notice after adding the washers to the contact points (I only added one zinc plated washer per bolt), that the hatch has a much more aggressive way of opening? Mine now feels like it pops up very aggressively, as if it's under pressure while closed. Anyone else have a similar experience and/or a workaround? My 22 had the hatch rattle a bit, so I added the washers and the rattle is gone, but I don't want to put the hatch under unnecessary pressure.

I noticed when I had too much material added to solidify the connection (one washer I had wasn't enough, two too many). With too many washers it created a gap and wind noise/whistle, with only one it wasn't enough to stop the clunk/rattle. Did a few different things to find my sweet spot, nothing complicated or overly time consuming but still wonder why this was never resolved at the factory after 5 model years.

The extra pressure on the lock mechanism can't be good for the hatch long term. At the very least it would wear out the latch/lock sooner.

That's my fear too. I don't want to wear out the hatch lock. I feel like even totally stock, the stingers hatch opens aggressively, but this is another level. Might play around with thin rubber or felt to see if that provides a more flexible way to dampen the issue.

I used 1 rubber washer on each side due to the pressure when ising the normal washers. This resolved the rattle issue and the greater compression from the rubber washers meant that the hatch close pressure was a lot less as well.

Yeah this is a good call. I ended up taking the metal washers off and cutting some thin strips of electrical tape and running two layers of that around each hole for the bolts. It gives a hair less thickness than the metal washer and also allows for greater compression. The hatch close is way more normal now, but I need to get it out on the road to make sure it addresses the rattling as well.

^^Please take pics so we can get some idea how you're doing it.

I still haven't touched mine. The rattle is relatively minor

Closing the loop for my 22, the electrical tape made it better but didn’t fix completely. I bought some rubber washers and installed those. Hatch pressure is better vs the metal washers, and overall I’m very happy with the results. Will hope that the rattle stays away with this fix.

unfortunately I didn’t take pics while I was doing it, but this is the washer that I purchased and it fit well:

You placed these in place of the metal washers on the hatch lid portion?

It’s been around 14 mths since I used the rubber washer fix on my GT and it’s still working great. Hopefully you have the same experience.

I put one with each bolt that attaches these pieces to the hatch:

I just installed the kit from Kia (bigger pad with two washers per screw) and so far so good! The tape over the contact points helped a little, but I also felt like my trunk was not shutting properly. I will let you know if this fix remains the way to go for me.
