I purchased a 2019 Kia Stinger GT a few weeks ago and it came with v12.5. Called Kia customer service and they recommended to wait until January as v14 will be out then. At least they are offering me one free update since I just purchased my car. I'm thankful for a free update, but it's sort of ridiculous that updates are ~$140 when they primarily fix issues with the entertainment system along with minor revisions to the maps...

Yep, welcome to this thread. Remind your dealer and KIA head office about this as often as possible. At least in Canada they finally listened (and brought us in line with Australia and other markets).

I just got my free upgrade V13.5 from 12.5 in the mail last week. Didn't know v14 was about to come out or I would have waited.

That will only be "wait indefinitely", because there is always another updated version coming out.:)

For what it's worth, I called Kia Customer Service today who told me that "sometimes" they were able to help out owners and give a free update. I did not ask for a freebie, but I did tell them that the car is only a month old and the maps/software on the car was outdated. They then transferred me to UVO support who told me, in so many words, to go pound sand and that I'd have to pay for the update or work with the dealer for any other options.

Quality customer support for a $52,000 car.

Not my/our experience. Kia Stinger Navigation Map Update

See how that works out?
Admittedly, Kia Customer Care is sketchy. Apparently it's a roll of the dice to get a decent phone dialogue person who will go to bat for you. Try again.

Unfortunately, this is still the problem with KIA. #1, a stupid decision to not ensure cars delivered to customers always have the latest software as part of the expensive paid-by-the customer dealer prep line item. #2, inconsistent response regarding who gets a "freebie" update and when/under what circumstances.

Fortunately, KIA Canada came to their senses and now gives effectively unlimited free updates (there are only two per year anyway) as the Aussies had all along and as are offered in several other markets. The maps are still woefully out of date (relies on HERE's user updating, which is slow and spotty, especially for the speed limit info used by that particular driving nanny); some of the nav and infotainment features are crap compared to much cheaper cars; the UVO system can only be updated in concert with the maps, which is ridiculous considering that the system functionality affects almost everything in the car and many people could not care less about the maps because they are using their phone for that--but at least we no longer have to pay for the privilege of being insulted with substandard software and maps.

Completely agreed, and if the UVO updates weren't bundled with the maps, I probably wouldn't even bother. My map-related complaint is that the speed limits are ALL wrong around my house and it annoys me to no end. It looks like they must have grabbed them when all the roads here were getting widened/under construction.

Apparently older versions of the UVO software had WiFi settings, so the units all have AT least that hardware. Why can I not just connect to WiFi and download the standalone infotainment firmware updates? The shitty Ford Flex I just had as a rental did that.

Kia really needs to sort out the dealership experience as a whole. I went with a buddy to a dealership up north when I was on Christmas vacation because he wanted to look at a K900. You'd think that someone interested in a car that literally nobody seems to want to buy would get them a little excited, but no. Took 15+ minutes for anyone to even acknowledge our existence. Had free cookies though..

This, and the absence of speed limit info on roads and streets outside of major population centres effectively renders the speed limit function useless--you cannot rely on it, so therefore need to ignore it.

As I have stated before, my previous cars used the car's cameras to "read" speed signs live as you passed them. The only time it ever got fooled was entering a five or six lane highway (10 or 12 lanes total) where the sign was so far off to the side relative to the car that it missed reading it. Big deal, it would catch the next one along the road. Oh, but that was some fancy-pants expensive car...sort of, but it turns out KIA already has the exact same technology and it is already in use on some models in some markets.

In other words, some marketing morons decided that the HERE maps and UVO bundling was better for us twits in North America (or all Stinger owners) than using the system that actually works properly, but does not generate any subscription fees. There would be an incentive to update the maps to get the updated speed limits if the inclusion and accuracy level wasn't so appalling to start with. My other story is that I live 5 minutes from the dealer where I bought my car. Just in the short drive home after picking-up the car, I already noticed two speed limit errors and was quite concerned the cameras were not working properly or the algorithm used was crappy (by comparison to other manufacturers). Wow, when I found out it was map-based, I just sighed and couldn't believe it. Google maps doesn't even try to plot every speed limit on every road segment in existence. HERE thinks they can do a good job of it!?!?

Is there an option for me to redownload the sd card content? I had accidentaly erased the card that was in my car with all the maps. Should I pay for the new one now? Maybe anyone can help out and clone theirs old card content? I just need to access the navigation menu settings to change the display and hud from miles to kilometers, I don’t use the Kia nav anyway. Help appreciated!

Marc, I contacted my dealership a few weeks back about an update and they said it would cost me for an update. Out here on the prairies the cold freezes some people’s heads so maybe they didn’t get the msg. Where did you hear that it is all free now in CAN?

Does anyone know if the promised (or mentioned) Jan update is out? I need to do mine and if I can't convince KIA for a freebee, I only want to do it once - thanks

You'll get your freebie - all updates are free to all Canadian cars now, for 5 years. The current version is 13.5 (fall 2019).

Start by registering with the KIA map update site. You'll get your free update, and they'll notify you when each new release is available.

Keep going, after I entered my VIN, I got a "you are eligible for a free upgrade" and it spits out a coupon code that you enter at checkout, but up to that point it looks like you have to pay for it
