3.3TT Kia Stinger Aftermarket Exhaust Information and Discussion

Hei Voon,
I went through dozens of videos to compare exhausts and finally decided to go for the Bastuck with the flap.

The other main candidates were:
- Borla S of course even though the noise doesn't really seem to change much. Not sure it comes from the videos but a lot of them sounded very disappointing
- Bastuck as it's ECE approved for us Europeans and I can control the flap manually. It is expensive (2.5K EUR) though
- JunBL
- Stillen
- Fi EXHAUST (South Korea) - very expensive
- the Sport option is only available in a few countries
...

tried to post links but as a new member I can t yet... :(
Hi Gui, good to see another European on here welcome. There is another couple of members from the Baltic states on here I'd sound them out for you but I've forgotten their names.

For those laughing at this post.

With stock cats/Downpipes/stock tips (powder coated), there isn’t any drone.

is it obnoxiously loud for those in the rear seat when RPMs are high. Yes.

is there a slight resonation at 1500... yes. But I’ve had drone in other cars. This is not drone.

Does my family members refuse to sit in the backseat as a result. yes.

but there isn’t drone.

I’m sure adding sound deadening would help. But I like loud. This isn’t even the loudest exhaust Borla makes. The attack is way louder. Just not make as a bolt on for the stinger.

again, no drone.

Now I can say the clearance in the tunnel and cross braces were tight. I suspect some people are getting physical contact / vibration. Which would be massive drone.

Bro how much did you spent total on the muffler delete? Im trying to find one here in the bay area to do this to my stinger
Are you using aftermarket tips on this exhaust?? If so can to advise the brand and where you acquired them?

Thanks!!

Don't know about US pricing.
Here it is priced similar to the EVC performance model.

I had some pretty bad drone cruising at highway speeds with the Borla cat-back & SSR pipes, so I tried the exhaust wrap fix as seen here:

MAJOR improvement - no more drone and inside the car is quieter in general. I was going to get sound dampening material to line the trunk like others have done but I don't think there's any need now.

Just installed Borla and drone is unbearable. I still have the OEM tips. Considered akrapovic tips as they clamp directly to the tail pipe but I don’t what to cut the diffuser and worried about the tip rubbing against the diffuser.

It looks like you have the stock tips. Have you had any issues with the warp or this setup? Given this setup appears to still be using the OEM tips that eliminates the need for trimming the diffuser or having the tip rub the diffuser. Given the movement of the muffler translates into the tail pipe putting pressure on the wrap is that creating any wiggle room between tail pipe and wrap?

The wrap is packed into the stock tips and held in place with muffler clamps on the pipes. If there's any rub going on, it doesn't seem to be causing problems. My wraps are still in the same spot they were 8 months ago and I can still cruise at interstate speeds without my teeth rattling.

Thanks. Hard to tell for sure, but from your video it appears the tail pipe is extending into the tip? You have a Borla S-Type exhaust? I had the exhaust installed at a muffler shop. If your tail pipe is extending into the tips than how did you move the exhaust further back to accomplish this? As you can see from the pics mine is not and therefore I have very little overlap between the tail pipe and wall of the tip in order to wrap the pipe and have the material inside the tip. In my case it would seem the wrap would need to extend further into the tip and that could lead to the wrap blocking the tail pipe if it ever moved and that would be the last thing I would want. It may be best if I purchase the akaprapovic oval tips which are the same size from my measurements as the OEM tips at 75x105mm given these will clamp to the tail pipe and extend the pipe beyond the diffuser which should hopefully significantly reduce the cabin noise. Another option with hopefully similar results.

Oh that's not my video, that's someone with a muffler delete from Tork. I just posted it to show how the wrap solution works. I'm using the Borla S-type catback and my pipes go a bit further into the tips than yours. I pulled them back as far as I could without causing an exhaust leak. You can do this by loosening the clamps on either end of the long pipes and sliding them and the mufflers towards the back of the car.

Gotcha. Thank you!

Not sure if the Borla has a crossbrace between the LH & RH sections, but I built one for my MBRP (see MBRP thread) and the akrapovic tips no longer rub on the diffuser.

Didn't help with the drone (or resonance, or whatever you want to call it) of course, but I could hear it rattling against the diffuser a stoplights before the brace.

After further thought an exhaust pipe extension may suffice, that fits over the Borla tail pipe (clamped down) and extends near the end of the OEM tips. This will move the sound behind the diffuser. No need to go the aftermarket tip route which requires cutting the diffuser and I can avoid the wrap method, which over time can wear and become an issue and besides that's not aesthetically pleasing to look at when looking through the tips. Has anyone gone this route?

Checked the internet for 2 inch diameter stainless steel exhaust pipe and it's in abundance. The only issue is most come in feet, therefore this would have to be cut.

I havent read through all 42 pages of this thread, but what I find with my Borla exhaust is it's loud sometimes and other times it isn't as loud. When it decides to be loud, it makes a trumpet-y kind of sound as you rev higher (hard to describe, lol). Has anyone found that this system has two personalities too? In general, I find this engine doesn't sound that good - just my opinion. Need a good ol' V8 or a boxer engine for that deep rumble, but some sound is better than no sound.

Yep, I hear the same and I believe that trumpet-y is what people are referring to as drone. The problem with our cars and the Borla is that this noise can be heard when cruising down the highway with the RPMs in the 1500-2500 RPMs. That nose becomes quite annoying on lengthy drives. Most folks only want to hear their aftermarket exhaust when getting on the throttle. From the numerous folks who have attached tips to their exhaust and therefore are expelling the exhaust behind the diffuser rather then under it has significantly decreased the drone, trumpet-y sound.

You have to remember this is a GT and not an American car, therefore not designed to sound loud. With that being said the aftermarket exhaust is much louder. As for the sound you prefer it’s in based on the beholder. I personally the love sounds of the cracks, pops and bangs from the Audi RS3. I created a poll and many folks agreed and not surprising that many disagreed. What is pleasing to one, is running finger nails on a chalkboard for others.

The bigger issue for me than exhaust is power. Many folks on this forum agree that the car can handle more power and would like to see more power. Btw, I have the 3.3 with a chip and even at 400whp I want more. Unfortunately the tuners aren’t there in droves and won’t be because there is not enough demand for a car that only sold a small number of units in the US.

Not to be a Debbie downer, as I do not regret my decision to by the car in the least. I would by it again in a heartbeat. I needed this car as a stepping stone for more power. For the first several months I thought it was more power than I needed. Than for the next several months it was adequate. For the last year I want more. American is not an option for me as I don’t like any of the American muscle cars. Foreign for me and I will strongly consider the Audi RS3 used. So many tuning options and I’ve read countless good review regarding the car and it’s handling. Maintenance doesn’t seem to be an issue either from what I’ve heard. You can get 600whp from a car that is significantly lighter and with only bolt-ons and a tune. No need to go bigger turbos unless you want 700+ whp. Ultimately I’m looking for a car that can run 0-60 is a tick over 3s and a quarter in 10s. A 600whp Audi RS3 can easily do that. That’s fast and because of all wheel drive it will smoke any American muscle cars that have 100+ more hp.

Word of caution and warning to those who’ve installed the round tips that fit snugly into the diffuser. You may think it’s okay because you haven’t heard any noises from the tips rubbing against the diffuser, however I met with my exhaust guy and he flat out said he wouldn’t do this for me and it’s a bad idea that will cause issues. When running the car hard the exhaust piping will heat to the point where the piping will expand and contract 1-2 inches which will cause the tips to rub against the diffuser and will lead to heat transfer. That’s a bad thing. He recommended I replace the tips with oval tips of the same size that connect with the exhaust to propel the exhaust behind the diffuser to reduce cabin noise. He recommend cutting out the entire area where the fake tips reside which would provide enough room for the tips to move without rubbing the diffuser. I’m taking his advice to heart and it’s his expertise and he has been doing this for decades.

Sharing for what it’s worth. Even if you don’t believe the exhaust piping can expand and contract that much, put your hand on the muffler and push it to see how much movement there is that will be transferred over rough roads and bumps to the tips and ultimately the diffuser, not good. If you stop and thing about it there is a reason why the OEM tips don’t connect to the exhaust. It should only be done where there is room for the tips to move without touching anything else.

Hi all,

Been looking to find if anyone had installed a JUNBL GT Catback for the 3.3...been searching everywhere for an in-depth review/videos and nothing so far

TIA

I think that is mostly the EVC Catback system, which isn't what I'm looking at due to cost. Looking for a review on the non-EVC JunBL GT system. Thanks!
