Jerky Cruise Control?

Well, I found it was difficult to get a video of but I did just record some 2-3 minute videos that I need to edit down to the parts that show it the best.

What I did find is that it was more noticeable when transitioning from flat to uphill or uphill to flat than it was when driving on flat (level) ground or when going up a steady hill. It was like it overcompensated for the change in road angle initially and then after a handful of seconds the jerkiness calmed down but didn't go away completely.

He's saying normally it's moving by about 2% normally but sometimes it moves as much as 5% (for example, going from 24% throttle to 28% or 29% throttle).

How fast it speeds back up after a vehicle moves out of the way is a separate issue and would be more related to the power of the "resume" button.

I tried to get a video tonight but my phone refused to focus on the dash at night. I'll do it tomorrow in daylight and it should focus so I can get a good video.
Correct. At lower speeds the throttle opens by about 2% and when driving down the freeway at 75mph the surge is much greater at up to a 5% increase in throttle position, and as mentioned, even greater than that when the road grade changes like going up a slight incline. And FWIW, my car does not have adaptive cruise and I ran my "test" on long, smooth, flat roads with little to no other traffic around me. Just regular cruise driving down your every day streets and it's happening.

Mine is regular cruise control as well and I tested it on long straight/flat sections (I'm in Kansas after all) as well as slight incline/decline and larger incline/decline. Seems like the transitions are the worst and then it figures it out and is only mildly annoying once it settles in until the angle of the road changes again.

This is a long thread, I'll read it all later. I have SCC/adaptive cruise control.

At steady speeds it's fine, and acts really well, even as the traffic is changing speeds. Where I notice a problem is in stop and go. The car is sometime REALLY late to hitting the brakes, unlike the Eyesight system in my other car. Then when taking off from a really low speed, the car doesn't roll on smoothly like Eyesight either, and tends to add throttle in bunches that I find to be very surge-y.

Sorry for comparing to Eyesight, but it's my only point of reference for adaptive cruise. I thought the radar would be significantly better at measuring accurate distance and changing velocities of the leading vehicle, but in my limited experience either the tuning of the system is bad, or the radar is not very accurate at gauging distance or has a low polling rate :(

How is "jerky" cruise control a safety issue? It is uncomfortable or irritating. That's all.
If everybody here that has this problem (especially if it's bothersome) could just register a complaint with NHTSA, maybe Kia would take more notice....
File a Vehicle Safety Complaint | Safercar.gov | NHTSA
I really want to buy a Stinger GT2 but I rely on adaptive cruise due to neuropathic pain in my feet.
Thank you.

@PMB this thread is about surges in the cruise control at a steady speed, not about the adaptive speed.
I'm not necessarily sure if there is a thread discussing the safety concerns of using adaptive or it's comparison to other systems. I know I have seen things discussed but I don't know that there is a dedicated thread. I'd search for one and create one if there isn't. It seems like a worthwhile discussion. We just shouldn't confuse the topic here...

What? Go off topic?

That never happens around here..

Try reading some of the complaints - you'll see that many of them are not safety related. Perhaps there's a better venue for getting Kia's ear - if there is, please speak up.

Edited to delete, I read your post too quickly.

I see your point if you feel you aren't being heard but I would not personally complain to a governing body about a minor annoyance.

More to the point, I wouldn't expect a safety oriented organization to care much about those minor annoyances.

Hello thread!

Just joined the forum. Karl here from Scranton, PA. I picked up demo GT2 AWD grey/red with 5K on the clock. I love it, and people follow me to gas stations to ask me about it. It gets almost as many looks as my Delorean.

I too am having the same issue with the cruise, both in adaptive (that issue is for another thread) and "regular" cruise modes. It's bad enough that passengers are asking me why I'm "driving like that". I am taking it to the dealer to have all of the window moldings replaced (another thread, too) and will report back with what they say. I have a feeling I'll be calling Kia directly.

Welcome, @wezzy1 Why are the window moldings in need of replacement? This is the first issue with that I've heard of.

Here is a datalog of cruise control at 65 mph. You can see all the spikes where it overshoots and many of the spikes have a corresponding dip afterwards to try to correct for the excessive throttle input.

The largest spikes go from 29% to 39% throttle.

I plan to drive this same section of road without cruise control for comparison to show how speed can be maintained with much less erratic throttle inputs.

Anyone else notice the car jerking/lurching when cruise is enabled?

I first noticed it on my drive home from the dealership a couple of months ago but I shrugged it off. I don't use cruise a whole bunch so it wasn't a huge deal until yesterday when it drove me mad on a 350 mile trip I took.

It feels like the computer is having a hard time making fine adjustments to the throttle bottle.

Mine had the same problem. Taking it in along with some other issues.

I have the same problem with mine. I’m not sure what the problem is but I’m taking it in. Other problems too.

I have the same issue that I noticed about 2 months after buying the stinger. The dealer has checked it about 8 times and never found a solution or what the cause is. The dealer checked for TSB from KIA on the cruise control and there wasn't any. They had the technician hook and check and said they didn’t find anything, even though they have ridden in the car with me and feel the jerk/ back and forth. It is at the shop today for oil change/ tire rotation and they are checking the cruise again, but I told them if they can’t fix the cruise I am getting rid of it. I asked them what they would do for me since they can’t fox an issue.
