Hydrolic Electronic Control Unit Recall

My lease is up in June. Not driving much. Will probably wait until then, unless I sell it first to Carmax, etc.

Love the car, but it's not worth it for driving 1-200 miles/month. Will just double up with the wife's GTI for now. When things get back to normal, will look at either another Stinger, or something else..

Mind you, every time I drive it, it puts a smile on my face.. Will wait another 1-2 months to make a decision.

Just DIY'ed using the Jeff's youtube video. Wasn't impossible.

Difficult?

There was a question asked by someone here but no follow-up from anyone, I want to make sure I understand for myself as well.
"So the new 25 amp fuses would cut power to the HECU unit whether the car is running or not, if there’s a leak and then a short, correct?"
Is this right? That the rewire kit with the new fuses will blow in case of HECU shorting even if the vehicle is OFF ??? This is very important to know!
Thanks!

My local Kia dealership refused to do the recall fix bc they said I needed to remove all after market wires myself first (i.e. JB4); they said they’re not allowed to touch anything aftermarket no matter how easy it might be to remove. I didn’t install the JB4 myself so I’m humorously ignorant on the plug-n-play of it all under the hood itself.

Got rear-ended last week and it wasn’t my fault so repairs are fully covered and maybe my trusty body shop can help with the DIY recall fix.

I would not trust the body shop muddling in the wiring of your car. You’re far too trusting my friend. You’re lucky bringing your car into the dealer with your aftermarket parts didn’t void your warranty

I have been v lucky indeed; although based on my limited experience with 2 diff Kia dealerships in LA they don’t care at all about the aftermarket stuff. Point taken about body shops tho.

I believe the point of the recall is that the HECU should not draw more than 25A, and in fact the wiring from the fuse block to the HECU is rated for no more than 25A, yet it was originally put on a 40A fuse, meaning an HECU failure that would draw more than 25A, but less than 40A would not blow the fuse but would overheat the wiring which could lead to a fire.

I had the recall done last week, but the dealer was pretty confused about the whole thing. I originally called the dealer because I bought the car used, and it had no service records with it. The dealer I called was the one that originally sold the car (according to CarFax) and did warranty work. The lady in the service department gave me the requested info, and informed me it was under recall. She said they would order the parts and call me when they came in (usually 1-2 weeks). I did not hear anything after 2 weeks so I called and transferred me to the parts desk to see if they came in, after giving my name and all, he said they were not in yet but in transit and to call back in a couple days. I called a week later and the parts guy said they were in and transferred me to the service department to schedule the work. I indicated it was about 2 hours drive each way so I needed it done the same day, they said no problem.
Now comes the day of the appointment, I drop off the car and get a ride to a local mall so I could hang out since I knew it would take about 3-4 hours since I had another item for them to check. I was surprised when they called an hour later and said it was all done. Seemed suspicious, but I didn't hurry back to the dealer. When I get there, and checking out, the lest thing the service adviser said was that I needed to bring it back because it was a two part recall, at which point I got a little irate because I was told the parts were already there. The adviser apologized and went to check with the parts guy and he could find no record of parts ordered for me! This was after three previous phone calls being told they would order the parts and later that they were in.
After demanding a better answer, they checked in the parts department again and said that there WAS a kit that was ordered for another customer back in November, but never got the work done, and since it as over 30 days, they could use that kit for mine.
So wait another 2 hours and finally it was done. What a PITA.

Holy crap, what a cluster! it's enough to drive you crazy! two part recall my ass. The fact that they would say "hey, we have to do an inspection" before replacing the fuses/wiring, etc is crazy.

Ah, but serendipity was working for you. The work did get done, regardless of their evident incompetence. "It is so hard to find good help these days."

I’m ordering the kit. It may be tight but is straight forward and safer in my hands than dealers.

From where? I can’t get my hands on one in Canada.

Kind of off topic but I've ordered 2 new axles from Big Tiger Parts through US Amazon, if you can get the part number they may have it. It was about $1100CAD for both, shipped with no duties or taxes. Come from Korea, got them both within a week. The dealer wanted 1200 CAD for one.

The part number is: 91KITJ525LQQK

Big Tiger Parts doesn't have it.

Even if I try my hardest to talk to a dealer, it is always a chore and a 50/50 chance of getting through to them... whatever the visit might be, sometimes as simple as oil change. My requests go through one year and out the other, most of the time.

Nor/SoCal?

Nor/SoCal?
NorCal, I live in the gold country (foothills), closest dealers are Stockton or Sacramento area. In this case, it was Roseville Kia.

Called my dealer today, they said they have not done one yet but they are aware of it and that it is straight forward. Sometimes being the first could be a good thing, in the sense that they may be more careful as to what they will be doing - here is hoping :)
