Would be curious to know if Australia gets the same deal with three options. At present i have only heard its a repaint which is done in two weeks.

2 weeks?! You could barely get it prepped in 2 weeks with the full teardown repaint Australian owners are supposed to get. I linked an article a couple pages back were the Kia Australia COO said it was full teardown, back to metal, factory quality paint job.

Where'd you hear 2 weeks @AV8R ? This whole situation gets curioser and curiouser:thumbdown:

There's a way to have a conversation about something like this without putting people down who plan to keep enjoying their car after Kia fixes the issue. In your mind it seems there's only one logical path and anyone else who accepts a different solution is being emotional and irrational. Telling Sunset Yellow owners their car is "Lemon coloured" doesn't add to the conversation.

We all know this is a serious situation but actual owners of the car are dealing with it and you're just simply telling everyone that their cars are now worthless. Doesn't seem helpful to me.

Cmon, I thought the lemon coloured reference was at least clever. :)

Just received "the call". The KIA motor rep was very thourough although she mention more details will be in the letter. Here's the option from how she explained it.

1. A full repaint which they will give you a loaner for the extent of the job. Upon getting back the car, you have 30 days to decide wheather your happy with the respray or you want to opt for the other 2 options. After 30 days and you decide to keep the car , KIA motor will send you a compensation check for electing to keeping the Sunset Yellow.
2. Get New Car. You know the rest.
3. Buy back.

Update... She said it would take around 1 month for paint to be completed.

Full repaint with an option to fall back on one of the other 2 if we are not satisfied?! Wow......

Now I REALLY cant wait to get that letter and see the full explanation of everything! This juT got a lot more papatable if the repaint isnt up to snuff.

Thanks a ton for the info@Ivansito !!

No problem. I will keep you all in the loop as things progress. It really did surprise me that after the repaint , we still have 30 days to decide. KIA is really impressing me on how their handling this issue. Now here is the mystery question, How much is that compensation check? I heard and seen Facebook posters mentioning 5000.00 dollars. She did confirmed it would be a very compensating amount.

Yeah it's nice that you got the call later since you could go into it with questions and info we had thrown around on here. I want that dam letter!! LOL! :D:D:D

If that amount is really what they offer.......That's REAL hard to turn down, even for a buyback and looking for a 2019 later...... Kia definitely surprising us if they really do that.

I have talked to KIA America and they say a letter will be sent within two weeks detailing my options. Full repaint? Only those that are on the KIA directions on the closed discussion. I also noted that I was told if I choose the repaint and when on examining the car on pick up after the repaint, if it is not acceptable to me, the other two options would still be available….the buy back or new car replacement with same options in a different color). As yellow is the color of my choice, I will probably take the repaint and go from there. I really don't like the other colors available for the GT2. I do like another color but it is not offered in the GT2. I will continue to let everyone know about my experiences in this process.

I got the same exact call today also..going over the options and verifying my address and such. I also asked her about my spoier and clear bra and remote start that I had installed and she put them n the notes and asked how much each one cost me. The remote start she said was already in there since i purchased it from the dealer.. I also told he what prompted me to get the clear bra was rock chips on my BUMPER with emphasis on bumper and she said that was put in the notes also..so we will see what happens. Mine also now has the flaking near the healights, so the repaint option will not be a viable option to me and I will let them know that up front.

To me, not redoing the bumpers in unacceptable, but maybe that's me being too picky. I will probably be getting another color if they don't agree a repaint to the whole car.
I am just the opposite on repainting parts that do not need the repaint. If the bumpers (etc) are not needed as they are not part of a problem, I am good as only if the repainted parts look the same as the non repainted parts. I do not want another color as I bought the "limited" edition yellow as it is not going to be a car that you see in yellow every day here in the USA....just my take.

Sounds like most with issues are being taken care if, which is fantastic!

My only concern....I am one of the "no with permanent protective costing" votes. With a three year paint warranty I hope I didn't spend a couple $k on Ceramic Pro and protect it just long enough to get out of warranty. That would suck.

Hi Guys,

A quick update. I've just spoken with my KIA dealer and have decided to have my yellow Stinger repainted. He offered me the option of taking a look at a repainted car, which they will have available in a few weeks, to check whether I would be satisfied before I made a decision as to whether to proceed. But based on his assurances I am confident that KIA NZ will do the job properly.

I also discussed the comments and information provided on this forum regarding which parts of the vehicle are to be repainted and how they might be repainted. He stated that there is a lot of misinformation floating around.

I was informed that all of the car's surfaces will be repainted (with the exception of the engine bay).

This includes all plastic surfaces and the doorway surfaces. The metal parts of the vehicle will be taken back to the white sealer before repainting. The plastic surfaces will not be taken right back but will be completely repainted so that all parts of the car match up.

IMO I will probably end up with a better paint job than when the car left the factory as a hand painting job will probably provide thicker coverage.

I must say that I have been very impressed, thus far, with KIA NZ regarding how they have handled this.

I should emphasise that this information is only from KIA NZ but I don't see why KIA would not deal with this problem in exactly the same manner internationally.

I wouldn't worry too much because from what I've read, ceramic coatings are not hard enough to actually prevent chipping. A few people on this forum have said that, but correct me if I'm mistaken.

I've read that as well. But chips from rocks is not the issue. More of a paint peeling/adhesion issue.

Has anyone found out the bases for that decision?

The dealer notice that was posted a couple of pages back says that the adherence issue is only on metal parts, which make absolutely no sense, and the problem is the paint itself from the supplier. Kia is contradicting themselves all over the place with this issue. Yes, the primers are different on the 2 parts, but if the issue is adhesion of the paint, and the paint is the problem, why not fix the entire problem? They used the same paint all over the whole car so if the initial batch is incorrect, then the shading is most likely off and the pieces will never match. Sure it will look great coming out of the body shop, but give it 6 months, it'll look like a patchwork quilt.

Also, I have the problem of the headlight rubbing the paint off of the bumper, which I am definitely not going to accept back unless it is fixed.

Bottom line is we have to wait until we get our letters to figure out what exactly Kia is going to offer us completely.

StingMe, post: 82730

"The parts not being re-painted are supplied to the assembly line already painted.
Bumper covers (fascias) are always supplied pre-painted.

The body was painted on a production line at the factory, while other parts, such as the bumper and trim,
were painted at another location using a different application method."

5000 sounds like very fair compensation, but it needs to be considered payment for loss in value after the repaint. This to me means it should not be taxable. If they are going to 1099 us at the end of the year like we won a prize that is not acceptable.

I’ve also been told buy back option at my dealer.

I’d take the swap then tell them to hold off until 2019 model comes out!
Hahaha, funny I was thinking exactly the same thing.
