Turbo Waste Gate Screech

My car, and several others that I've talked to, have had that sound since they got the car. Even my mechanic, who works on nothing but KIA, has told me this was normal sounds for the wastegate.

Ya that was the last thing my dealership told me,
"It's Normal".
The topic seemed to pop up again with someone getting both turbos replaced. Is it normal or is this a defect across the board? Who knows.

I think it may be a defect. When I took my GT1 into service they immediately said they'll be replacing the turbo under warranty to fix the issue.
I dropped the car off yesterday to get the turbo replaced. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Gentlemen,

This is the throttle body. Every GT Stinger I've heard has this.

Mine (~16K miles) squeaks at shutdown, at least sometimes. I'd say this is a recent thing, but I don't stand outside my car when I turn it off.

My first impression was something spinning grinding against metal and coming to a stop. Could be something pushed by sudden compression/pressure, I suppose.

the weird thing to me is why is it only seemingly the passenger side turbo that makes this sound?

First I have followed this thread for a while....second I heard it today!!!!! Is my car going to blow up? :D

I'm not too concerned with it yet. Nor am I willing to go back to stock on everything to take it back to the dealer lol.

Just wanted to be a +1 if kia reads these forums that there seems to be a squeak concerning people and maybe they should put out a bulletin to its service department about these. When some delearships replace a turbo because of it people are going to freak out who have the same sound.

I forgot to update this thread. The dealer replaced my passenger turbo. They said Kia won’t let them fix the wastegate, they want the entire turbo replaced. I have Stillen intakes and SSR cat deletes. No warranty issue.

I am going through this exact problem now. Said they fixed it after having it 3 months, I got in and it still does it. The service manager said they replaced the passenger side one. Agh! Not only that my car has 700 more miles on it and a crack in the windshield. My car is brand new! Getting a lawyer. Going to GM at dealership, local media and social media now. I also was also stuck in a hybrid piece of crap loaner.

I don't think this is a cause of legitimate complaint. If they make you pay for the "loaner, then you've got something.

A cracked windshield can happen in the first mile. It isn't a sign of incompetence or bad quality.

What is the lawyer for, exactly? 700 miles added to your car, I see. Not sure how that will work out, though. Good luck!

Welcome to the forum.

MY19 Base GT. Screeching sound at every shut off, passenger side only. Will be hitting 5K mile soon. Not sure if I want to bring it up during my first service... fearing they may end up doing more harm than good. Also had a faint tapping sound at rpm over 3K during the first 1000miles from passenger side, that eventually went away.

That's terrible. Have you called the Stinger line at KIA USA? If you are pursuing compensation under Lemon Laws, be sure to thoroughly document everything and anything that is possibly related! The Better Business Bureau runs a free dispute resolution program (called BBB Auto Line), but I'd (also) get a lawyer.

Good luck!

P.S. -- Might want to put your general location and Stinger type in your profile. Maybe there is a better KIA dealer someone can recommend, or someone has direct experiences dealing with your state's Lemon Laws.

Ive had the same problem and got both passenger and driver side turbo replaced but the noise still there. Ive sent the video to the dealership and they forwarded it to kia techs and now waiting for an update. If theres no fix to this i wonder if i can file a lemon law?

For a "screech" that only manifests when shutting down? I don't think that a mere noise is grounds for claiming "lemon".

Well, you didn't. Or this is the longest turbo replacement job ever.

The noise also happens when driving not just when you shut off the engine. Everytime you press the gas pedal the noise is clearly present. I had a video of it posted on Kia stinger group Facebook page close up where the wastegate is placed. I'm curious what Kia will do to fix the issue.

Merlin I like you and in most cases I'm in total agreement with you, but this is a pretty big example of how sometimes you come off as a KIA fanboy who will blindly defend them for no good reason. Would you really walk away from a dealer with a grin on your face with the problem unsolved and 700miles on your car and a cracked windshield?700miles? That's INSANE! I understand a tech needs to do a test drive after a fix but the entire service department doesnt need to borrow the car to hit up laguna seca for open track day over the weekend. Everyone install a dash cam for your own safety, 700 miles for service is bullshit.

Yes. You're right about that post. Don't know why I sounded so casually dismissive. I didn't mean to be. I was writing and going back and rereading her beef, and correcting myself as I went. Should have just deleted the whole thing and started over.

I did mean it when I said good luck, not "good luck with that", as is usually the sarcastic use of it.

I'm a "fanboy" of all good things Kia.

Anybody who abuses the privilege of having stewardship over somebody's car should justly pay for the abuse. I wonder what compensation for 700 miles could be.

If I were the General Manager over that service department and had this case brought to my awareness, I'd either fire the asshats who racked up the miles and damaged the car, or take the cost of full repair out of their hides/paychecks. The 700 miles I would deduct from the service at cents per mile of lost operating cost. And I would throw in a few free oil changes. Something like that. But only if this irate customer worked with me and didn't go all crazy with a lawyer and calling "local media", etc. (Probably too late now. She's so busy at being angry that she hasn't even posted here again.)

I hear the noise but it seems to come from the passenger side? Does this mean I need to take to the dealer to get turbo replaced? How many have got there turbos replaced? I still see people here complaining after there turbo replaced. Its it normal?

Just replace them with big turbos that's what I'm waiting for lol

+1 I have the noise too, on turn off or ISG it will do it sometimes. If I kick the pedal down hard and fast it will do it every time.

Figured it may be the throttle body as its just metal with no lube.

Here is the tedt boys, take a screw driver and rest it against the turbo and get the sound generated, you will clearly see where it's coming from.

For me it's coming from the passanger side turbo and NOT the throttle body.

Test out and let us know where it's coming from on your end.

Based off video the screech would barely be audible with hood down?
