Wheel/size/offset and tire/size/profile...can be confusing.

Hi everyone. Found some Michelin Alpin pilot snow tires in mint shape. Guy is asking $450 but might get to $400. Trouble is there are ( 2 ) 255/35R 18's and (2) 235/40R 18's. I don't think the 255's would work on my stock 18's correct? Also might not do well with the AWD. Uggh. Hate missing out on good deals for common sense!
I wouldn’t put 255 tires on an 8 inch wide rim if that is what you have. That isn’t a good idea. 8.5” wide rims is typically the minimum anyone would recommend for 255 wide tires.

Bought ‘em for $350. I have some time so I’ll try to find some wheels to mount them on. I can always sell them for that. 500 miles on them.

I don’t totally agree here, 8.5s can have 275s no problem, we have 255 on 8.5 stock, even those have a little taper, 255 on 8 would be just fine, especially since these are 18” wheels.

plug in those dimensions on wheel-size.com, there should not be a problem there.

You can put whatever tire you want on any wheel you see fit. However, that doesn’t mean someone is going to recommend it. I posted a link to a site that makes recommendations on what tires fit what wheels. Do you have anyone or site that recommends wider tires on an 8” wheel?

wheel-size doesn’t seem to recommend a 255 tire on an 18” rim unless it is at least 9” wide. Every site I have seen lists 8.5” as the minimum width for a 255 wide tire. Do you have anything that shows differently?

It’s definitely not recommended anywhere. Though I have seen a lot of comments in auto forums where they have been run. Who knows. Hopefully I’ll come across some winter beater 8.5 rims. Either way it was a smoking deal.

I checked the google spreadsheet and no one used anything over 255 on an 8.5” wide rim. In fact most people go down to a 245 on the front rims if they move up to 8.5” wide rims there. Can you give an example of someone who has used a tire wider than 255 on an 8.5” wide rim?

Isn’t a 275 tire almost 11” wide? You are going to put that on an 8.5” rim?

No one recommends 255 on 8” but it seems plenty of people have ran them. Been reading through some auto forums. I’m not auto crossing this thing any time soon.

On this forum? No, anyone who wants to go that wide just buys wider wheels, but on an 18" with that much sidewall, sure you can. It all depends on the wheel and tire combination. Offroaders will run 13.5" tires on 8" rims, there's enough sidewall. Most people choose a tire combination based on a few factors, and the width of the tread does not directly equiate to the width of the wheel, and is only one factor. I run 245/285 on 20's because that combination is identical diameter, and I chose to oversize by 2.6% to fill out my wheel wells. 255/295 and 265/305 are also matching diameters based on the sidewall for our ~26" tires.

These charts don't tell the whole story: Tire Width for a Wheel/Rim Size Chart

I'm running 285's on 10.5" wheels, and my tires are quite tapered. That chart above says "295" is the max which is clearly not the case, we have an example of a 305 on a 10.5" wheel on the forum: 3.3TT - "We (I) have the meats"

Here are my 11.25" (285mm) tires on my 10.5" rim, you can see how much the tire tapers. Look at the stock 255 on the rear 8.5's not quite as tapered as my setup, but I would definitely consider running 275's if I chose to keep my stock wheels for summer.

As you can see, wheel size, offset, and tire size profile .... can be confusing.

285 on a 10.5” rim is the minimum so 295 is not the maximum for sure...

For the question about the Michelin, they are rated by the manufacturer to fit 8.5 to 10” wheels. Can it fit a 8.0” rim, yes. Is it recommanded, no. Will it be dangerous, probably not...

Also, the google spreadsheet has links to wheel-size.com for front and rear, stock and Eibach. Click something similar and plug in the size you want to compare.

this is the point of this thread, there are a ton of variables, lots of off the shell, obviously going to fit combinations, I populated that spreadsheet because there’s not a lot of info out there on the limits of the specs for these cars. Part of the fun of a build is rolling the dice and trying something new. It is for me anyway, warranty be damned.

Shocked by how close a 32mm offset is on 20x9” to the front strut. Glad I didn’t go with 37mm. C4F70CCB-994C-46DE-ACF9-018B41F38E46.webp

I’ve got +35s, I’m 3mm closer :) For what it’s worth I think +32 to +30 is probably the right fit for 9” wheels on our cars.

how come nobody has some 18x11s on the car yet.. is there an actual reason because if not i'm doing it lol

Any of you guys use Velox Wheels that you can get from Costco? Any good?

Anyone run aftermarket 18's on a GT yet? Looking for specific wheel examples that will clear the Brembo calipers. I saw in the Google Doc that someone ran a Fifteen52 rally wheel, but that's the only one...

Also, I wouldn't suggest running a 275 on a 10.5" wheel unless you're really after a stretched look. I had 275/30-20 Pilot Supersports on 10.5" HRE's in the past. Wasn't an ideal set up, IMHO

Where are the 18" heads??? I saw on the Google Doc someone ran 18X8.5 +30 Fifteen 52 Turbomac wheels with 255/40. Not sure if it was on a GT with Brembos however..That's exactly what I'm looking to run.

Anyone else running aftermarket 18's on a GT?

19x9 +32 flush fit not touchy the brakes
