Sunset Yellow Discussion

Hmm. That seems to be the running gag here. No consistency.

That's what I got was no plastic at all, so that's why I went straight to the buy back. Even if they matched the pant up perfect, in a year or two, they will be different shades as the old paint on the plastic will age at a different rate than the new paint.

Agreed...too many variables to ensure a consistent final product. The dealer i was using for the repaint, not the same as i purchased from, said initially they would cover the cost of the front bumper and clear bra re-install. They specifically said that they (the dealer) were covering this above and beyond the repaint. Not sure where that decision came from but, as @gilthanis1 said, too many outcomes based on geography.

@Andimal - glad the car is back...i agree with you in that the bumpers look darker. Can really tell when i adjust white balance on the screen. Remember that you have 30 days from finish of paint to make the final decision to keep or not.

That’s why I am really happy that nearly the entire car is being painted. The only thing left out of the exterior is the handles. But, who knows, they may have painted those too. They were fairly excited to paint the thing.

yeah i have to agree with the inconsistency of it all. I was afraid when i dropped mine off that i was going to have to do the run around with KIA. I got lucky and the district rep in my area told my dealer to do what ever is needed to make me happy with the job. I really wish they would just make an amended service bulletin to include the plastic bits so people stop ending up with multi yellow colored cars.

I'm still trying to find out what in the hell they have approved on mine...... Was told the earliest I could expect it back would be middle or end of next week, most likely the week after.... That'll be 8 weeks without the car :(:lipsaresealed:

I am in the process of getting a replacement car. Kia found a Ceramic Silver GT AWD in South Dakota and I found a Hi Chromo Red on Red GT AWD in Oregon. My case manager is aware of both and said she'll get back to me at the end of this week with what she can do. That part has me confused though, it's your offer to replace my car so you should be doing anything possible. My patience is starting to wear thin.

I was confused with this offer as well when explained on the phone to me. Especially since i have a credit union involved with financing. The case rep tried to explain how a collateral swap would work but then digressed into MSRP differences and such and it really seemed convoluted. That is, it didnt seem like a 1:1 swap, even though i have a GT2 top trim. I told her i wasnt considering swap so no need to continue further with the explanation.

Agreed that they should be doing what they can on this as they offered it!

Ah, but see, therein lies the problem........ Kia, in their ever infinite and growing wisdom, has INCREASED the MSRP of the Stinger for 2019, so if the combo you wanted was a 2019 then you get to PAY THEM the difference, even though they created this whole mess.

It SHOULD be that if I had a 2018 GT2 AWD, and you offer a replacement, but the color I want is only in a 2019 then they eat it. Kia created this fiasco so why should I have to pony up a single penny for them to fix the problem and follow through with what they offered to begin with?

I completely agree on this. To muddy the water even further, she did advise that i could swap for a 2019 of comparable trim and package and did NOT mention the MSRP difference. That discussion came when she offered to swap for any other model. i asked what benefit or credit i would get since "technically" there is no comparable model given mine is a Limited. No real answer to that one.

If i was going for the swap, id argue i should have a $5k buffer given they would have provided $5k in cash to keep the yellow. This assumes the repaint is done. Otherwise i would not bring up the MSRP difference for swap to a 2019. At that point, take the buyback and then re-engage fresh on a 2019. I dont see how we (consumer) will come out ahead with a swap to 2019 and having to make up an MSRP diff.

Got my car back today and pretty happy with how it turned out. Matches really well and glad to be driving it again. I honestly wouldn’t want any other color... maybe ceramic grey with red interior.... only color I would consider if I turned this in. I plan on keeping her and will see how the paint holds up.

Stopped by RK Kia to see the progress. See pix. Hood, front fender and doors were painted and in the booth. Next up the main body. They told me the Kia rep said he will not authorize painting my front bumper or rear tailgate section. PMO! That's the 3rd time they said NO! Quote was $464 if I wanted them painted, will probably call Monday and say yes.

Oh, forgot to mention the car has been with them 2.5 weeks (17 days).

Might be good idea to get painted but I didn’t do it... mine matches great and I’m not using the 5 k they want to give me on their paint failure. I also leased the car so if I don’t want it after a few years then it’s gone.

Got the new winter setup on . Went with 18s all around with AS tires so I can rotate properly and make those tires last! Cheap rims but pretty happy with how they look

What rims are they? Hard to see in the photo but look similar to the Enkei EDR9 18's I have leftover from my Optima that I was going to put winter tires on.

Liquid metal from discount tire.. went with one of cheapest they had.. looks ok and really don’t care what happens to them..

How small of a rim can I put on? My son has a set of winter rims with blizzaks for his Scion FR-S in my garage, I believe they are 17". He won't need them since he is Florida at college with his car. If the bolt pattern is the same, can I use these wheels?

I decided to do the buyback from Kia. It was pretty easy and we'll see how everything goes Friday when I "surrender" the car. I am getting everything back including down payment, trade surplus, taxes, title, licensing fees and all payments/interest in addition to everything I had done to the car. Basically, walking away from a car that I got to use free for a year. Just seemed like too many issues with the repainting and they don't have another color I care for. I went a different route and purchased a car that was the alternate to the Stinger. Although I love the Stinger, the car I purchased I love even more and got a great deal on. Ended up costing me less than the Stinger... new 2017 Cadillac CTS Premium Luxury VSport... yes, found a brand new 2017 with 80 miles. I thought the Stinger was quick off the line. The VSport is a beast, not to mention the comfort and options. That said... I'll be looking to see what Kia does with the Stinger in the next couple of years and perhaps I'll revisit owning one.
