Sunroof Rattle Fix

Got a good deal on a M550.
LOL I was looking at that same car a few weeks ago along with an S7 (again). I just get flashbacks of maintenance on my previous Cayenne and Mcars, especially since this is my daily. Although with this stay at home order, my car has gone 80 miles in 2.5 weeks.

What year did you get? xdrive?

My Ford Edge had a rattle in the sunroof, I folded a microfibre and laid it on top of the wind deflector arm, then shut the sunroof and haven’t heard a peep from Its since. I just don’t use the sunroof ever. The folded microfibre towel applies pressure to the sunroof it does not interfere with closing… The result is a very quiet sunroof that was very noisy

All M550is are xDrive; it's an M Performance car rather than a true M car- more power and upgraded brakes/suspension but not as hard core as an M5.

Sorry, I was replying to Socalstinger. More on point, I wish Kia offered a sunroof delete option on the GT1 and GT2. The number of times I've opened the sunroofs on my current cars? Zero.

If you've got them flaunt them lol. We do especially now Autumn is here and we'll only tan rather than fry.

Its sounds like the headliner clips around the inside edge. Push hard up to re-clip them, you should hear them click back in .... but they may just come out again ... and may need dealer warranty fix to resolve them fully.

Thanks for this! Sure enough they were loose/unfastened. Just a couple more rattles to fix now...

About noisy sunroof.

During winter, or less than +10 degrees, when i drive and turn this and that way, i can hear "movements" until the car is warm and it seems ice-ish stuff is thawed around the sun roof, is this the same as my noise, or is mine just due to cold weather and ice in the cracks?

As you are probably aware thinks contract (shrink) in the cold and expand in the heat. In winter my Subaru's dash would rattle but not in Summer. Id say the same applies to your sunroof if its only minor occssional rattles.

Thanks for the middle-school science lesson. Some cars, that don't use sub-standard plastics and poor design for their interiors as Subaru has been renowned to do so for years, have dashes that don't rattle in any season. Same goes for sunroofs. Any useful suggestions about the precise source of the two or three different sources of unwanted noise from the Stinger sunroof (area)?

If you look at some of the new vehicles coming out, especially with HKG, I see a lot of models moving back to the old style sunroof - smaller in size and not panoramic with the plastic exterior side covers, but rather the piece of glass that is surrounded by all steel panel (roof). The panoramic roof is undoubtedly likely more desirable to consumers cosmetically, they look nicer (in my opinion at least) and offer a larger opening. I'm starting to think panoramic sunroofs are inherently going to rattle more than the traditional style due to size, weight, a smaller roof structure (steel portions), and they may have even more parts than a traditional sunroof (the two exterior side rails for example).

I'm not alleviating manufacturers of any blame for rattling sunroofs, nor am I surmising exactly what the cause is since it seems there are different fixes for different people, but the trend I'm seeing towards a more traditional sunroof in new models instead of what I otherwise view as the more cosmetically pleasing panoramic sunroof is likely manufacturers inadvertently showing there is an issue with the design of panoramic sunroofs that they cannot yet figure out.

Plus the instances of large sunroofs "exploding" when hit by an object... It's made me consider having it covered with a headlight film

You're welcome.

Exactly the content-free response I would expect.
Mate over the last few years you've made it your hobby to come on here and argue or denigrate . As you would well remember you jumped onto one of the threads i was on and questioned my knowledge about an issue and argued continously even when i gave you facts that Kia acknowledged.

I took it up with the Moderators and they said give us some examples of what a PIA this guy is. So i did i went through your posts and referenced all the ones where you were arguing or being a smart Alec. From memory i think i stopped at sixteen, needless to say they were blown away. Thank god you had a lean spell for awhile but i see your'e back to your old self. Their advise theres always one in a bunch, i guess with over 15,000 members there's always going to be a few rotten apples. Oh and incidentally back then i had a couple of people PM me to say what a distructive character you were.

Sorry, I didn't appreciate your intervention into a serious thread affecting many members over what is now years about a very frustrating issue NOT acknowledged by KIA with a dismissive comment about plastic dashes. Sorry if I misinterpreted and your comment was an attempt at a serious contribution to a conversation with various solutions to the problems. And yes, I don't take kindly to suggestions that blatantly obvious problems are not real or that KIA should be excused from responsibility for poor design choices or manufacturing flaws just because we love the car otherwise. As mentioned, sorry if your comment was intended as a serious note because you thought in the prior 5 pages of comments no one had realized that materials expand and contract with temperature variation and this causes squeaks and rattles in vehicles.

Just wondering if anyone else has tried the silicon fix and if so, has it worked flawlessly? I'm getting clicks from my sunroof and it's been to the dealer twice now

It doesn't work on the roof , but does on the doors

I agree with this. Moreover they should have a whole 'utility' package that adds integrated brackets on the roof for a removable rack, more durable back seat and rear hatch trim materials for dogs and resisting the tears and stretching from kids car seats and such.

I'm sure plenty of folks would chose it just for the lack of sunroof. The rattle is annoying for sure. Mostly fixed mine with the tricks here but gotta do some more work.

Just wanted add I seemed to have fixed mine. My rattle got progressively worse to where I could hear it even when it was open all the way, which it did not do before and with music playing. I saw a guy that made a youtube vid january of 2021 that said he stuffed thin clothes along the front, but my rattle sounded as if it was coming from the back. I went to the dollar store and bought a pack of face towels and stuffed them under the back rails. Now open or closed I dont hear anything but my MBRP exhaust which is very nice. Im glad I didnt waste time or money at the dealer. Literally $1 to fix.
