3.3TT Open Source Intake Mod

I did this mod too and absolutely love it! Was also lucky enough to find matching Blue filters at my local auto parts store.

I’m amazed at the improved throttle response and swear there’s more mid & top end power. Like GTB said it comes onto the torque & boost so easily now and I’ve noticed it not fall off as much at 5-6k. I can also finally hear the turbo spool and blow off. Not real loud like the HKSs, but enough to sound aggressive and mean.:D

Mine is noticeably different and can really hear the turbo spool at part-half throttle from 2-4k, then a nice “whoosh” when you let off the gas quickly. I can’t get my sound clip to upload so I’ll try to get a video up later, but IMO you should be able to hear a considerable difference.

Thanks again GTB for this DIY tip and looking forward to your other videos and photos!

PS: I’m not sure if anyone else noticed this too but my car now holds gears longer and doesn’t shift down as often unless I really floor it. Would this be another sign it’s making more power? Like it is making more torque easier so the computer holds a higher gear longer instead of shifting down?

I like the blue color filters that matches your car!
Which auto store did you go and how much did you spend on them?
The most important part is "Does it filter properly?"

Yeah have the intake another go today on the highway. I can hear a little "psssssh" but I would have to really get on it. But normally the car just upshift so fast there's no time for the "psssssh" sound. I even tried sport manual mode and let go of the gas at 4.5 rpm no sound.

Interested to see the bracket's people are using to support the filter. Maybe an amazon link to them or something?

Also, are you guys buying the 4 inch pipe and cutting it in half? What are you using to cut it?

Thanks everyone. Great thread.

Is that a Spectre filter? Post a sound clip if you can.
Yes they are Spectre filters.

Im sorry I do have a few I’d like to share but I can’t figure out how to upload sound files, and it says the videos are too large.. I guess I’ll have to upload to YouTube or something. I’ll work on it and post them as soon as I can.

Thank you and me too!
I actually bought Black ones before I realized they made some that almost matched my Micro Blue. I had to go to 2 different Autozone’s but finally found a set and only cost $29 each.

And yes they fit perfectly. I actually like these better than the K&N because of the extra opening at the top. Even more filter area and it pulls air from multiple sides. Matching car color and more surface area for the filter media is a win-win in my book.:D

For the pipe found this at autozone, just buy 2 instead and no more cutting needed. That's will I do too.

Oooh great find! Thanks!
You own 2 Stingers? Wow! Talk about an enthusiast!

Do you mind putting up a link of the filters?
That's a lot cheaper than the E-bay one posted by the original post!!

I wish I could get my sound clips to upload so you can compare to mine, but please understand this is not like an actual HKS blow off valve that whistles loudly. Also the blowoff sound is only noticeable when a lot of boost(8-12psi) is built up and quickly dumped, so the RPM isnt directly related to the sound. This means you'll rarely hear it on shifts since its not dumping all the boost. Depending on how much boost I've built up mine sounds different each time I let off the gas, and varies from a quiet "psssh" to a somewhat loud chirp/whistle, but the loud blowoffs are few and far between. Maybe try flooring it from a stop or 20mph and once at high boost dump the gas and see if its any louder.

FYI- There is another "DIY" thread discussing how to remove and plug the blowoff return hoses that connect to the intake piping. This should give you a lot more volume for the blowoff sound since it doesnt need to be redirected back through the intake system. Read here and hope that helps. https://stingerforum.org/threads/so-about-the-stock-bov.6068/

Thanks for the tip but think thats for the 3"x6" pipe and that would still need to be cut into 3" pieces. I dont believe they make a 2" version, which is why the 4" cut in half works perfectly. I think this is the one I got. https://www.spectreperformance.com/search/product.aspx?prod=87081

Spectre Performance 8136 , Spectre Conical Filter

I hope that helps and I'll post sound clips or videos as soon as I can get figure out how to upload them.

That reminds me. Why does the boost gauge go all the way up to 40?

The link I posted is correct they have the 2" size just get 2 of them, so no cutting involve. I Ordered the part# from autozone.

This is great. No reason to get the K&N or Tork intake over this.
I agree and am loving this mod!

It is a great inexpensive alternative to the K&N, but will admit I wish I had the heat shield and insulation foam to make a partial CAI box. Once the car got warm sitting in traffic you could feel the difference in performance until up to cruising speed.

I want to build something similar to the K&N heat shield and for now I just use thermal insulation sheets I got from Autozone. Makes a huge difference and blocks the heat from the turbos. The filters now get like 20-30 degree cooler air because they’re behind the insulation. It doesn’t look great but it helps at least.

How about the stock airbox with k&n drop in. Lol

No offense but the only advantage of a drop in K&N is having a reusable washable filter. For the money they’re not even comparable really. There is a noticeable difference in how much better the throttle response is with open air conical filters, and being able to hear the turbos is worth it on its own!

The reviews I read about the drop in said no noticeable difference in sound or performance... I know K&N says almost 10HP from their cone intake, but it feels like it hits boost quicker and has even more of an increase of torque under the curve or peak HP. My but dyno says 15-20+TQ from 2-4k with this vs a drop in.

Seriously drop-in is the best way to go for performance. For sound the open WAI is the better option.

It's really all about what the individual owner wants more, a lot of extra pssh or a little bit extra power .

There's a video on YouTube showing an open WAI similar to K&Ns gaining a mere 4 hp to the wheels. And that was with a cold engine with the hood open. I'd guess a warmed engine with closed hood would loose a bit of power.

FYI Stillen is coming out with an intake with fully enclosed filters in about a month.

This is stillen! I think Forum member on IG has it. Looks similar to the DIY. But gonna be more money like the K&N CAI though.
