Oil pressure light comes on only when car is stopped

D.J. do you have a diagram showing the resistance of the oil pressure sensor?
Kinda... But it only gives the resistance vs temperature, not pressure.

Where can I screw in a pressure gauge and check the oil pressure? I would like to make sure before dismantling the intake manifold.

You and I both....

To my knowledge, there is no access port to tap into for oil pressure...

You could, and should, modify an oil filter cap, to accommodate a pressure gauge - for testing. If you do, please share pics and post results...
To date, I have not read a single post where an actual low oil pressure was the cause. It was always a bad sensor. (Good news for our engines and our variable vane oil pumps)

I haven't seen one made for our engines, I doubt this Chrysler one would fit - but maybe it would (looks similar in size).

Mercedes uses the same technique for some engines

I attached the description of our oil pump as well. It's Interesting.

My first thought is to use the plug in the oil filter housing:

As you can see, it is a screw with a gasket, so there is probably oil there. I don't know how reliable this measurement will be.

If you can thread an oil pressure gauge into that port, that should be perfect, and should give you a valid oil pressure reading.

Got this thing (oil pressure low lamp) on and off at idle a month ago. Drove the car directly at the dealership the next day and haven't seen it since then... They changed the oil pressure sensor - no effect. Just got a call that the engine and transmission are out of the car, there were chips in the oil pan and that they are disassembling the engine... So sad and disappointed, really. The thing didn't have 120k km on it, at least we have 7y warranty here and (hopefully) the repairs are covered by it, but...damn... Another dream in the trash...

Are you proceeding with the repairs with only a hope that it will be covered under warranty?

This could be very very costly

It is covered, but they can always come up with a reason later why it could be my fault (once they figure out the real issue).

Well, good luck, hope it goes smoothly, keep us updated as best you can.

Took my '18 GT2 in yesterday for the oil light comes on/goes off thing. Was told its a bad oil sending unit. They quoted me $470 for parts, and $6000 for labor because the engine has to be taken out to replace it. I went and picked the car up and brought it home. It's been doing this for 6 months, I'm not too worried about it until I can look into other options.

It really is astonishing that they can just outright make up whatever numbers they want!

That's crazy

My engine is OK, at least for now. The issue seems to be the oil pump. Will be replaced under warranty in two weeks, along with some minor oil leak.2.webp

Wow, this is the first defective oil pump I have read about. That would be a significant fear of mine!

Actually, owning such a complex car is a significant fear of mine. But I live with it and don't borrow trouble from the future. Our own bodies are far more complex than any vehicle will ever be, and we don't go around getting all worked up over what system might fail next. Well, we don't if we are not mentally ill.

With the variable vane pump our cars use for an oil pump, I don't think it is as common on vehicles to use this style of pump.

She's back home from the ER. :D Oil pump changed, oil pressure sensor changed, oil line (recall) changed as well as various gaskets required when disassembling the engine. So far so good, nothing scary on the dashboard and they'll check from leaks/issues next month.kola.webp

An update, sort of. When I took it in a couple of weeks ago for the oil light they originally told me it was a little low on oil and that was causing the light to come on. It was due for an oil change so they did that and gave it back to me. As I was leaving the oil light came back on so I took it back and that's when they said it was a bad oil sending unit and quoted $6k+ to fix it. Somehow, the oil light just stopped coming on in the past couple of weeks. It came on and off for a week or so after the oil change, and now it's stopped coming on at all. So, no light no problem, I guess?

No problem if your oil is full and stays full. Just check it often for a while and make sure no oil is leaking anywhere. $6K, they can take that to hell.

Isn't this interesting, how many reports on the forum are coming in about dealers telling owners, after the recall work manifests as subsequent issues, like your oil sending unit, that they must spend thousands of dollars for a problem that wasn't there before the recall?

Could it be colder weather related? It only seems to come on for you in the hotter weather? What climate are you in?

The culprit is a bad oil sensor. It’s a $100 part that is a $1,000 job and a full day to fix. A real bear to replace. I would recommend doing the oil line recall at the same time to save you from making two trips to the dealer. I would also FIND A DIFFERENT DEALER. $3,400 is outrageous! I live in Maryland where everything is expensive it seems and I only paid $1,000. I have 225,000 miles on my stinger now, and it’s the only issue I have ever had with the car. I can say I have a great relationship with my dealer: Timbrook Kia in Cumberland, Maryland. They have always been excellent and have serviced my Kia for the past 5 years.
Just had the same issue pop up on mine.

You've got the highest mileage I've seen on a stinger. What has been your maintenance schedule? The manual runs out of schedule somewhere around 100,000 miles. Dealership looked at me like I had five heads when I asked what the maintenance schedule is after 100k. Told me to follow the manual.
