Kia Stinger Navigation Map Update

So is the latest update worth it? I am not a huge fan of the nixies, but is the latest radio UI worse? I am downloading now, but will wait for the weekend to possibly update. It would be nice if the files were accessible from the forum.

It's just very plain. It doesn't match the design language of the rest of the UI either. It's not a deal breaker for me, I just don't like the looks. I listen to AM radio 95% of the time, but I'm also usually in the map screen.

The nixie tunes were odd and kind of cool, and that's the way the car came. Now it looks like the Playstation CD player app.

Thank you for that analysis. So looks like firmware got changed but map data same. Speaking of map data, here's a file size of just the nav data (navi_backup.tar) compared to november's update.



Hard to imagine poi's growing by 10GB!. Something is bloated....

2022 MY update now available. Some files date 4-9-2022, other dated 5-3 or 5-4. This update is huge, just shy of 38GB. Nov update was about 28GB.

Had to turn off all my security (country blocking and web filtering) on the firewall so the download could progress.

My car takes exfat formatted drives. Amusingly the updater notices it is bigger than 32GB and asks if I have mistakenly selected a hard disk.

Fat32 can handle it just fine, but the installer formats the 64gb flash drive to exfat.

According to wikipedia (File Allocation Table - Wikipedia), fat32 can handle up to 16TB using 4K sector sizes, but only 2TB using 512byte sectors. The other limitation is 4GB max file size. The update doesn't contain any files this large.

I suppose kia saves itself some headaches by formatting the drive as part of the update download. I did preformat the 64gb flash drive to fat32 before hand (Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way), expecting it to complain about exfat file system.

It's actually strange they included exfat support as that means licensing fees to MS. Either way, find out if it all works in about a month or so.

The copy to the drive for me was fine. Took about 15 minutes. But the update takes over an hour. I feel like they untar each file off the drive. It's so slow. Maybe there isn't enough space to copy the archives to the internal memory first.

This just a crappy flash drive. Good for reading, slow for writing. I have so many of these, just grab what ever is nearest when I need one. The dl took about 10 min, writing to the flash drive took ~35, and updating the car, figure 30-45.

The contents of the flash drive match the downloaded files.

Given it's android based, these will get expanded to the internal headunit flash at update time. This would be the internal flash which is 64GB maybe 128GB even? I thought this was listed in the owner's manual but I can't find a capacity spec.

Looking inside the files they do not appear to be compressed at all. What idiot packaged this. Actually same goes for the last update too. Both just archived. It seems common sense to compress 'em so the download is smaller, and faster esp for those with slower connections. It still has to write it to either sd card or flash drive. Can expand then. SMH!

For shits I'm zipping all the files up to a single file. Reading fast, ~90 MB/s. Whole thing compresses to ~23GB with just standard compression. 23GB much faster dl than 38GB!!!

Just want to add my experience. I used the updater software, entered in my model, and it downloaded and formatted the drive for me. Plugged it in to the USB port and it asked me if I wanted to update in background, now, or when ignition is off. I chose ignition off and when I got to work I shut it off like normal. Came back and it showed me update was completed and a qr code to see new features. Pretty awesome and I was not expecting it to work. This was on a 22 GT2.

Mine keeps asking to reconfigure "kia connect". An email comes with a link to continue with registration. The link goes to my account, nothing there and it looks normal as it is fine.
Operating the system though generates this pop up screen over and over again! (22 GT Elite, 10" screen)
