Kia Stinger Navigation Map Update

They're are considering all these innovations yet can't get the basics right, namely pre-emptive text for addresses and the like deary me.

I made sure in my comment that "updates for life" of the vehicle are the most important thing, along with updated maps. It makes no sense to pay for features and services for a car when WiFi and smart phone services already have the information that they are asking about interest in. I put "$0" on all monthly costs.

They are running a survey for ideas about the future of the infotainment system: New Navigation Features Survey I suggest all of us go through and at the end comment about wanting the firmware updates for free without the map updates.

I came across this because I got an email about updating my maps but it seems like the software is still at v12.5 but the underlying map version may have changed.

Thanks.

Very odd that many of the features are already available if you have telematics as we do in Canada. They are clearly trying to figure out what they can get away with charging US customers for them, since nothing was new or innovative.

Here's what I left in the final comment box:

Infotainment system updates should be available separately from maps updates--outrageous that they are not at present. Bluetooth texting feature is seriously inadequate (copy e.g., Mazda). Maps updates should be free for life considering they are perpetually out-of-date (even the latest versions) and the high cost of purchasing the optional nav system for the car. Speed limit info should be through car's cameras, not map-based (even worse than out-of-date--many streets and roads are completely missing data even though speed signs are clearly visible and could be easily captured by cameras)--KIA already has this in other vehicles/markets than my car. Fix the broken sorting of USB music (only "Files" sorts an album in proper album order; other choices put music in alphabetical order...something no one wants or uses). Better cartography would be nice (copy e.g., Subaru). Fix Bluetooth phone address book not updating properly even when you attempt to erase or disconnect and re-pair the phone. These would be a good start, though more issues exist...

Give me the Nav out of the $30k cerato and I'll be happy its more user friendly than the one in the $65k Stinger

All I really want is Apple Carplay / Android Auto updates. I never use the built-in nav and probably never will. What sucks is that you must pay for the map updates to get the Apple / Android updates.

I haven't updated mine yet, I'll probably wait until whatever comes after 12.5 is released to grab my freebie. Apple Carplay works OK now but it is a bit sluggish and buggy. Hopefully some updates will help with that.

I'm curious how the traffic information on the inbuilt nav system works in Australia?
I am sure I have not connected the system to my phone's hotspot. Does it use the traffic information on the radio or some other means?

Marc, thanks for the suggested comments. I filled out the survey using $0 for all costs and added the following comments.

Based on the cost of the US Stinger, ALL infotainment updates as well as upgrades should be FREE FOR LIFE or at least FREE FOR LIFE OF WARRANTY. Upgrades should include remote start and remote window open and close. Navigation should be "smart" to learn frequently used routes, live traffic, gas prices, audible notification of school zones and destinations based on names as opposed to just addresses as in many cases. All of these are available on my $200 Garmin. eg. "Navigate to Sierra Nevada Wellness Clinic". Not understood so currently I have to know the address. Find POI locations more than 6-10 miles from current location and allow alpha and distance searches. Each update and upgrade should be available separately from maps and at the owners convenience. Make speed limit info on HUD through cameras. Add wiper and/or heated Forward Collision Avoidance, Cruise and Lane Assist camera and radar cover glass, like in rear windows. Recognize address of contacts for navigation. Currently, Me: "Navigate to John Smith", car: "Sorry, I didn't understand you." Me: "Find John Smith." Car: "Would you like to call John Smith?" No option to navigate to his saved contact address. Add options to sort music by Genre, Album Order, Alpha, etc. ......Thank you for considering my input.

I think I understand your question and I think I have an answer. LOL I'm not in Australia, though. The Nav system has it's own data, for which you can purchase updates. It's ability to position is based on satellites. A phone or similar device has no bearing on it's operation. Again, I don't know of anything special in Australia, though.

I believe Australia has HD Radio. Some stations in the US use the extra bandwidth to transmit traffic and weather information. Absent SiriusXM or a cell connection, I'd guess Australian HD radio stations do the same thing.

Yep, that's how it works in Canada, too. HD radio. Or, it reverts to Sirius if you have that subscription. Is the traffic from Sirius better? I don't know, but the HD radio-based traffic is mediocre at best. Out of date a lot, which defeats the purpose of it. If you commute a lot or care a lot if you are on a trip, Waze or Google maps would be required.

The downside to the HD radio data connection is it only works when in range of a compatible broadcast tower. I don't really care about the traffic info so much, but I do enjoy the Doppler radar weather map that is also part of that data.

Unfortunately while it works while in or close to Calgary, there are only a few cities in Canada that broadcast the HD data signal - and when traveling outside of those select urban areas the information isn't available. I could get around it with a SiriusXM subscription, but as I find their audio quality to be mostly poor, I don't feel it's worth the cost.

Has anyone gotten the update to 12.5 done? I do not care about the maps, I use Google. Which means I am interested in any improvements to the Android Auto, if any. Just hoping someone on here has done this, can relate their experience.

I just got off the phone with an extremely helpful woman at the Kia Premium Team at 855-542-7733. My GT2 was built 12/17 and I bought it at the end of May 2018 with old versions of the SW (see attached pic). Since mine was built Kia has released a couple of updates. She informed me that Kia is offering a free one time, lifetime system/map update. The current version is 12.5 but a new version is due to be released in late Jan. or Feb. and suggested I wait for the new release then contact her again for the free update. Now I'm waiting for the new update. Oh, and does anyone know what the red snowflake in the upper right of the display is for? It doesn't seem to be associated with the system info screen or the temp dropping to or below 39degF. View attachment 18241

Okay wait, so I am confused. I just got some emails saying that the latest update is available, go get it. But it is still 12.5. It is now almost mid February and per this post it should be coming out around now. With my getting these emails, it makes me think that 12.5 is it, nothing else is coming? I called and was told there is nothing else and there is no free offer. Do you have her name/extension? Also, my SW looks like yours....how do we know if we are on 12.5 or not? I do not see any such numbers like a 12 in that list. Thanks!

KIA has been providing no-cost updates to the latest version, if when you purchased the car the software and map version was out of date.

If you purchased the car and it already had the latest version of the software and maps on it, then it was already current and there is nothing to update. The next release of the software and maps will be a paid update if you decide that you want it.

Thanks, I did this survey too. Hope others do. I hope they fix/add USB ports that actually read USB, not just charge. The one USB port they have also does not conform to the USB protocol which is why it does not work with a hub. Also asked that they add climate/door locks as an app for remote operation. Turning the car on is great, but not really helpful if you cannot turn on the defroster, heated seats, etc.

Satellite (GPS). Nothing to do with your phone.

Australia has two standards, Analog AM & FM and Digital which is known as DAB+ (VHF Band 111 174-230MHz). The Stinger nav system is not reliant on either AFAIK.
