I went to get these installed and the auto shop said they couldn’t do it because it removes the catalytic converter. It’s against the law for them to do it where I live. Now what?

I'm in NY where everything is illegal and I'm getting mine done next week. The mechanic did a mock up already and never mentioned any issues. The cats stay on it's just a dump valve. When closed your completely legal cats in place.

You Do It Yourself.....Its easy Tell the shop that there Reta### that you are only removing the secondary cats... Its just 4 bolts... all you need is to jack the car up ...do one side at a time....17 mm deep socket, extension, and a socket or little breaking bar to do it with ease...you can you cam get all these at a local harbor freight tools for under 50 bucks and return them when your done.....dont let a shop stop you..

Dam. They had the car up in the air and the guy removed the mid pipes thinking that was being replaced. I was so pumped until he realized it was a downpipe. Then said he can’t do it. Then he reinstalls the midpipes. Shit! Will I pass emissions if I swap it out. Thought I did my research, guess not. Feeling sad.

Even with the primary catalytic converter still in place, taking off the secondary cat is still modifying the factory emissions control equipment. SSR, as do pretty well all vendors of similar equipment, has a clear disclaimer that these pipes are for 'off road use only'.

If you want to run them on the street and it's not legal where you live, then the truth is you legally can't. Having said that, I think it's safe to say that many others either installed them themselves, or found a shop that is willing to perform the requested work and leave the legal responsibility with the owner (if they can, without exposing themselves to liability).

From an emissions testing point of view, most testing authorities rely on the computer and car sensors (vs. a tailpipe 'sniffer') to indicate an emissions fault - and as the O2 sensor is upstream from these pipes, installing them won't trigger any faults. The ultimate decision on what you feel comfortable with is yours.

I bought the stuff that you suggested to do it myself. I just need to summon the courage to jack it up and give it a go.

It's going to be difficult. From what I understand it takes quite a bit of torque to break the bolts lose. I used an impact wrench and it still took quite a few impacts before breaking them free.

Working with what you've got you're going to want to get the car as high up as possible. To give yourself maximum leverage.

You might also need a socket extension to actually be able to reach the bolts.

Yeah. It's illegal to touch any part of factory emissions systems like cats. We usually get away with it because states follow their own laws which usually aren't that strict and cops in most areas won't care unless you give them reason to. But if a business gets caught removing or modifying the cats on a non-antique car by somebody they can get hammered so I can understand why they'd turn you away.

Give it a go just hit the bolts with some PB blaster and with the breaking bar it will take a little force but they will come out....I did mine on my garage and they came out with ease...good luck keep us updated....I never had any issues passing inspection as long as the Check engine does not light up and it wont with the SSR downpipes.....In canada it might be a different story but you should have no issues.....

JUST TO BE CLEAR:
These downpipes will fit both RWD and AWD versions of the 3.3TT. For the AWD orders we will be providing a special custom made bracket plate. Again, both RWD and AWD owners can run these downpipes. It seems that some clients were misinformed or mistaken. Hopefully this clears the waters!

I just need some clarification on how/where to install the custom bracket plates for the AWD? I noticed a short instruction page that came with them about the little black bolt, but does the custom bracket replace the bracket that's currently on the stock downpipes? I think a photo might be helpful before I get these installed. Thanks much!

No instructions in mine. I was also wondering about that lone black bolt but havn't attempted the install yet.
