Hot transmission tunnel

This is what forums are for! Amongst many other things, they're an easy way to gather enough evidence if/when there's an issue that it can be referred to easily at any given time. Try that on Facebook.

Anyway, I'm going to move this into the main Kia Stinger Talk area so that it gets as much attention as possible...

Hi
I have the ashpot in the Front holder full with metall-money for parking.
If there is heat the pot must glow but it does not...

Seems like this would be relatively normal if you're on an extended drive.

Not normal if you get burnt!

I was replying to OP, and he didn't say anything about getting burned. He gave a vague description of it getting "hot". Same thing would happen in my BMW if I was on a road trip.

Thanks for the information. Just looked at Jonnytig's thread, some nice photos from directly underneath. Seems to show heat shielding inside the tunnel above and around where the cats are.
If problem persists will get my local dealer to investigate rather than DIY fix!
Yes let dealer fix it, no DYI

I suggest maybe a laser thermometer just to take some base temps before a ride / and after a ride..
Or have someone else in the car with you while you drive, using the thermometer to take temps of where you are noticing the heat, that way your focused on the drive :)

Not sure if any of you guys have infrared thermal cameras ( or could buy one and return :p ) just to see where all the heat is coming from and where it is more pronounce, that way when dealing with dealers you have 100% proof and can check certain parts instead of taking things apart to find the source.

Which is why I was asking if this might be a more general issue with RWD cars or specific to the Stinger.
My iPhone shut down as was too hot when left next to the front USB socket, which looking at the Apple support is vaguely between 35 - 45 degrees.
I guess you could call it a feature if it keeps your coffee hot in the cupholders but not for your iced tea.

Questions

1. Is it only RWD, or AWD, or both?

2. Is it Left hand drive, right hand drive, or both versions?

3. Is it 2L Petrol, 2.2 Deisel, 3.3L Petrol, or all 3?

4. Is at any speeds or only slow speeds?

5. Is it early cars or later cars?

The list can go own, but unless there are a lot of Stingers being driven and people report it here, it’s going to be hard to pin point the issue.

Not one reviewer mentioned this ... not even the US guys who did the 1700 mile Grand Tour. So can’t see this being a general issue and must be either and few isolated cars or makes/types of drive/engine.

Done 1400kms and that "heater core pipe " is mostly definitely an issue. Its going back again to the dealer for a more serious discussion along with the sub woofer issue

Just a brief follow up.
Centre tunnel (cup holders) definitely get warmer to the touch when driving on motorways / A roads for more than 30 minutes.
Side of gearbox tunnel again warmish to the touch but nowhere near burning as Ozstung has had - so different issue perhaps?
Otherwise still can not help but smile every time I get in the car!

It sounds like they need to add more insulation throughout the car. If I put a cold drink in my cup holder, I don't want it getting any warmer than it already will naturally...

Is that the area of the wireless charger? Those can get hot.....which come to think of it might be the reason they are only in Canadian models and not the U.S......

.....and we are baaack! Arrived 48 hrs ago from a 6 week - 5000 km round trip to Florida :)

In short, the car was a blast to drive and behaved flawlessly - after we turned a dial.

As many here have experienced, the transmission tunnel and charging pad were heating up beyond comfortable.

We also noticed, that at the same time, the two rear heating vents in the console, facing the rear seats, were blowing really hot air.
There is a little wheel between the vents. Once we turned that down, the hot air stopped being expelled and the hot transmission tunnel became a non-issue.
There appears to be a connection between the functionality of the rear air vent and the temperature of the transmission tunnel.

I have an oil change coming up and will have the dealer's service department have a look at it. But as a short-term solution, turning off the rear heat worked for us. :)

Edit: I should add, that our daily runs were 7 to 9 hours. Temperatures varied from 31C to -2C.
AVERAGE speed was >115 km (distance vs. time), where possible, speed varied between 125 and 137 km/h. On some mountain stretches, my wife told me we were @ 155 to 179 km.
The hot transmission tunnel syndrome did not reappear after the rear vents were turned off.

Umm i knew i wouldn't be the only one. Ive noticed once the outside temp exceeds 26c and you don't have the AC on that transmisdion tunnel area really heats up
Also watch for warnings on your mobile (cell) phone when it exceeds 40c. I have a Samsung S7 and i get the critical warming if i leave in the charging bay area, and thats with the slide door open.
