Exhaust Tips

I’m not a huge fan of shiny chrome so it’s aesthetic mod. I blacked out the door chrome trim as well.
Got it! I'm an old guy from the 60's muscle car days. Hemi cuda's, GTO's, real Camaro's etc, etc.
In them olden days chrome & mag wheels were the thing. When one couldn't afford new chrome wheels or other trim they would take their old rusted wheels or corroded mags and spray paint them black. And now......It's the style. Who would of thunk it.

So todays tips are basically the same chrome cover (but black) we would cover a tail pipe with from the local auto parts for about $2.00.

I have thermal, but same story - the muffler end tips don't extend into the faux tips attached to the diffuser. This is likely why you're hearing the drone and why I did the trim and custom tips. When I did the tips, the drone was about 75% eliminated. I still get a little bit, but it's now bearable whereas previously my wife couldn't hear what I was saying. I also did not want to do the trimming, but I ended up liking the way it is when trimmed. Of course when I tuned the ecu more air was being pushed out so it did get a bit louder again, but still better than before.

You could just bend the end piping a little to center. For mine, I was able to tweak the hangar a little bit to get it more center

After further thought an exhaust pipe extension would suffice, that fits over the Borla tail pipe (clamped down) and extends near the end of the OEM tips. This will move the sound behind the diffuser. No need to go the aftermarket tip route which requires cutting the diffuser and I can avoid the wrap method, which over time can wear and become an issue and besides that's not aesthetically pleasing to look at when looking through the tips. Has anyone gone this route?

Checked the internet for 2 inch diameter stainless steel exhaust pipe and it's in abundance. The only issue is most come in feet, therefore this would have to be cut.

I was in the same boat as you when I installed my Borla. Was on the verge off going back to stock and selling it. I decided to add sound proofing material to the trunk and this helped considerably. Then I did the "drone fix" talked about extensively on this forum by wrapping the muffler with muffler wrap and tucking it into the back of the tips to fill in the gap and clamping it all down. These 2 things eliminated 90% of the drone and cabin noise. Now I absolutely love it.

If you go to the Kia Stinger Aftermarket Exhaust information and discussion thread comment #828 theres a link to the video. Sorry I just don't have time to get under my car. Good luck! It works for sure!!

Here’s the video of the wrap

I have the Borla exhaust. In lieu of the wrap or going with an after market tip which attaches to the tail pipe and will require cutting of the diffuser I’m going to try the following and report back.

The Borla tail pipes don’t extend into the cavity of the OEM tips thereby increasing the sound in the cabin, therefore I will add an extender to my tail pipe that will extend to the end of the tips to see if that helps reduce cabin nose.

No worries! Saw the video.

Want to see this as well! I think the MBRP doesn't extend that much to the OEM tips too, might need that extended pipe.

Anyone have a link that they’ve recently received an order from? I just had to cancel mine. Seller kept telling me “just a few more days to ship”... I don’t think I’ll ever get them.

Same here. Anyone have a good source for tips? Looking for round, black or CF, with the blue lip. Ordered a set of Ali a month ago, supposed to ship last Friday, and now it says they'll ship in 13 days. No response from vendor after three messages.

Drone eliminated

I only have have the NGL axle-back mufflers but even they still have some mild drone at about the 1500rpm range. Which was driving me (but mostly my wife) nuts.

My fix was connecting the muffler ends to the oem tips, so there is no gap around it, allowing all the exhaust gases to exit out the back of those fake tips. Similar to post 525 above. But I noticed the exhaust length grows (forward to back) by approx 10-15mm when hot, so I used a combination of foam on the muffler backing plate and some rubber pinchweld seal around the front edge of oem/fake tips. This closes the gap, so they are essentially "connected" but the pinchweld seal allows the heat expansion movement. I had also stuffed acoustic insulation up under the rear bumper/guard area [but don't think this alone did too much at all].

I'll post some pics when I get around to it.

This has eliminated all my cabin drone .... and even though I had planned to install sound deadening sheets and acoustic foam internally to the boot area, as suggested... I don't think I need to now (for drone anyway) although these would/should improve the audio system quality and reduce road noise.

Good luck.

Love the tone, hated the drone.

thanks for the info. Please do post pics. I will be attaching an exhaust extension to the Borla tail pipes to extend the exhaust deep into the OEM tips. Same concept and hopefully they will reduce drone as well. I will report back. Same shoes as you as my wife and kids won’t drive in my car and it bothers me as well.

I don’t know if what I and my family hear in the car is drone, resonance or what but I’m hoping the loudness of the sound is reduced by extending the tail pipe deep into the OEM tips so the exhaust will edit behind the diffuser rather than under the diffuser. Exhaust should not be heard when cruising but rather when getting on the throttle.

Per the pic you can see the tail pipe doesn’t even enter the tips and therefore the exhaust edits under the car and into the open cavity, hatch and cabin. Don’t understand why Borla didn’t extend the tail pipe further.

Sure man, will do soon... my hot tip though; close the gap around your pipe too, if not, the exhaust sounds will still go back up under the car. And for some reason the back of our stinger's seems to act like a big fkn megaphone - my guess is the trapping of exhaust noise and the reverbations under there, then translate into the chassis and cabin = drone. Good luck.

Here is the pic (hot and cold) before I installed the pinchweld on the other side (i.e. fake tip opening). Installed some 10mm foam rubber (seld adhesive) on my mufflers backing plate, which is similar in design to the plate on the oem kia mufflers. The pinchweld seal sits against this now.

Nice! Did you make that backing plate? And where is the 2 other picture? Is not showing though.

No, those plates comes with those mufflers.
Sorry no other images there, I tried to link them first but failed, so inserted/attached instead. I will upload more pictures of the pinchweld install later.

Also posted in the MBRP thread...

I got my MBRP today and to be installed next Friday. I also got the 63mm x 89mm tips.

Just to see, I tried slipping the tips onto the exhaust however I was not able to get them over the pipe. It seems like the diameters of both the exhaust and the tips are nearly identical.

Are they supposed to be this difficult to slip on?

think I saw your post on the FB group :sneaky::sneaky:
100% the 63x89mm will fit the MBPR mufflers tips, that is what I have and they went in perfectly. the trimming will happen on the 89mm portion has the round tip font fit through the diffuser.
Personally I think I shaved maybe 3mm of the bottom part of it to make it go through and snug in there !
Being eye level will help you push them in AND to make sure they are centered.

The reason I'm requesting pics is because I took my car to an auto body shop yesterday (I have the round 51X89mm Akrapovic tips) and they said it looks like the lower half of the diffuser would need to be removed to accommodate. They are seeing what can be done and will be getting back to me. I'm wanting to attach these tips to the tail pipe to extend the exhaust behind the diffuser to reduce drone as well. I want to make room for movement of the tips given that they will be connected directly to the tail pipes of the Borla exhaust and there will be some movement of the exhaust over rough roads and bumps. You mentioned the tip fit is very snug with minimal trimming of the diffuser, and my concern with that is that rubbing, vibration, sound may occur between the tip and the diffuser. Please report back if you run into this.

Did you attach these tips to the diffuser using a bracket similar to what is attached to the OEM tips? In regards to your MBPR tail pipes were the centered within the OEM tips prior to installing the Akrapovic tips? The reason I ask is because my Borla tips cannot be centered given the distance between the tail pipes and the distance between the OEM tips, therefore this will require additional trimming of the diffuser to make them fit. I like the look of the round better than the oval, however the oval are an exact match, so I may go that route. The downside with that, is I will need to order from China and with the Coronavirus causing massive delays with shipping I may not get these tips for months. Maybe I can get lucky and find a local seller.
