3D Printed Snorkel Swap

Bad news ....

My printer went up in flames yesterday so there its going to be a bit longer before I can get these out to you guys. The new printer should be here next Friday, but they haven't sent me a tracking number yet so I'm not so sure if that date was accurate. I'll keep you guys posted on a timeline for when I can start printing again.

The good news though is that the new printer (Ender 5 Plus) is quite an upgrade over the last one . Hopefully that translates into faster/better prints. Oh, and less fires.
What's the status on the printer and are you backed up still?

Just got the new one assembled tonight. I'm working on calibrating everything and should be back up and running in a day or so. *fingers crossed*

Let me know when you are up and running and back orders caught up so I can get one from you.

Printer is all set up and humming along. Just a heads up, I am most likely going to switch to PETG for these air ducts so that I don't need to keep the bed as hot. PETG doesn't start to get soft until around 175F, which is plenty good enough for where the part is located.

Here's a shot of the current print in-progress.

That cabe management though. Can't the plastic be treated after it's printed for better heat resistance?

I haven't been able to find anything that makes it any more heat resistant. The brush-on epoxy/resin hardeners can smooth it out and make it harder to crack, but I don't think they do much for thermal protection. I would love it if I was wrong though!

I can't tell if you're saying the cable management is good or bad, haha. Compared to the one I had before its amazing.

I'm working on my first 3D printed mod and chose to design something to replace the stock intake snorkels that sit behind the bumper cover.

This is somewhat of a hybrid between the Velossa Tech Big Mouth and the JT intake cutouts. I didn't like the fact that you had to remove the entire radiator shroud with the VT, but the simplicity of the design was appealing. The JT intake requires you to cut ports into the shroud rather than remove it, but its only available as part of their kit.

So...I started prototyping models and while I haven't quite reached a final design that I'm happy with I thought that I was far enough along to share. All of the prototypes were printed using a large extruder with low resolution in order to speed up the design cycles. The final print will be much higher res and so should be much smoother.

Version 3 (still working on the overall size and fitment up to the shroud)

Nice work!!

I wonder if the snorkel is there to deaden the intake sound?

I saw another thread that talked about how much restriction is in the stock snorkel and when it was removed, the flow improved greatly. Something like 9 inches dropped down to 1 inch of mercury. They mentioned that the intake sound also increased.

Hey guys, the PETG is in and I have a successful print using the new filament so I will be fulfilling all of the backed up orders over the next couple weeks. Thanks for the patience!

Yeah, that was a huge difference! I'm working on getting some live test data with the car moving and under load, but my focus has been on getting sets out to everyone who asked for them.

Send me your pp address when you are free. Or my address is in PM.

Hey man, kinda off topic, but how do you like the Ender 5? My son has an Ender 3 and it's been great but I want my own printer (I'm sure he wants me to have my own printer too lol) and the 5 is a bit bigger than the 3.

So far, the Ender 5 Plus is pretty great. The full cube frame and dual z-axis makes the thing an absolute rock. No wobble or play anywhere. I haven't quite figured out how to use the auto bed leveler on it, but the manual bed leveling on it is fantastic and the z-offset adjustments are really easy to make.

I want to give everyone an overall update:

First, these things need a better name since they aren't really snorkels. At a minimum they are cold air ducts, and in some applications they are more like ram air ducts. Anyone have any suggestions/opinions?

As far as printing goes, the PETG prints are coming along great and I should be done with the first batch of 10 in the next few days (I've completed 6/10). I am sending out sets to everyone in the order that I received their request (either here in the thread or PM'd). I'll send everyone still waiting for a set their place in line to give them an idea of their wait time.

After I get done these first 10 I am going to take a short break to work on some other Stinger mods I've been wanting to prototype, but then after that I will do another batch for those that didn't make the first run (probably another 10).

2 second install. This is how they are supposed to go right? o_OIMG_20200313_182820.webp IMG_20200313_182714.webp

So, I guess the first batch is sold out? Are there any options on these, or all the same in black?

First batch is all sold out, but I will do another batch soon. Also, I can do custom colors for an extra $10.
