Kia K900 and Stinger Sedans Recalled Due to Fire Risk

Dropped my ‘19 off Wed. Morning for a scheduled 42k service which includes plugs and oil. Happened to get the recall notice in the mail a few days earlier so I asked them to add it in on. He confirmed that was a good amount of work and would probably take an extra day. Friday came around and they’re still working on but said since I happened to be the first recall they got in they were taking it slow. He noted they attempted to do it without dropping the engine but determined it was necessary half way in since the part was so difficult to get at. He said they learned a lot and will be dropping the engines going forward. They also had a hard time loosening some of the bolts due to access. I told them to keep it as long as they need to ensure I get it all back in one piece and it doesn’t blow up as soon as I drive off their lot. Car has been flawless outside the common #3 plug coil/crack/heat/misfire issue serviced about 10k ago. Interesting this work is near that hot spot area again.

I got the recall letter last week and was just gonna ignore it for a while until I've had time. (2018 GT) But I just got my DMV renewal in the mail and the recall is is listed on there. Does that mean it's mandatory for CA registration? If so, I only have a couple of months to do it

I was told 2-3 days for the G90 when I called.. if it wasnt already done citing my vehicles dealer info sheet from 2020

Ca only cares about smog. You’re good to go.

I took some time today to inspect the heat wrap on my car.

With a flashlight, looking straight down along the oil dipstick tube, you can barely see the back end of the heat wrap. Further forward you can see the front end as well if you look between the two black coolant lines that run along the top of the turbo and the engine block.

The line you're looking for is below the two black coolant lines and has a silver heat wrap on it.

You can also get your hand in there along side the TCU and the dipstick tube and spin/turn the heat wrap so that you can see both sides.

Mine looks brand new. No signs of heat damage so no plans to do this recall anytime soon.

For reference, I have 25,000 km's on my car and it is a weekender, not a daily.

Here is a bad line for reference:

My part is ordered from KIA St. Catharines. They are only able to request recall kits 2 at a time from head office. Mine will be #6. They stated that they’ve had no difficulties with the repair, but it will be most of a day, not 3 hours. I was also told to ignore the coolant replacement as per schedule, as they have to drain the coolant anyway. Typed it right on the invoice without me asking.

“22 with 45,000 km

Has anyone gotten this done with a JB4 installed did the dealer give you any kind of shit? Also interesting that this includes an upper rad pipe as i am having overheating issues also with what seems like some kind of coolant line leak somewhere

I have a JB4 and my ecu+tcu is flashed. After looking at my dashcam footage, the tech just replaced the part and serviced coolant. It my vary on dealer but i think they just want to get you in and out

How many hours was yours in the shop?

Based on my dash cam no more than 3 hours. I dropped off my car at 7am, he didn’t start working until 12, and i went to retrieve at 3.

The dealership I go to said that they've gotten it down to 2 hours to do the fix, it seems like it's more of waiting for the car to cool down before digging down there. As mentioned by others they also serviced the coolant as well. dropped the car off at 8 am, picked up around 1 pm

Am I the only one with OEM green coolant?
Is everyone else on OEM pink?

I really don't want to deal with diarrhea brown when they drain most of my green and then refill with pink

2017-2020 models are green. Believe they started using pink starting from 2020 or 2021 models.

The green coolant is obsolete.
But both green and pink are same 10yrs long life coolant.

But they create a diarrhea brown color when mixed!

I don't want my coolant to look like mud.

Just checked my vin. No recalls are showing. I am wondering if that left side leak has something to do with turbo failure. Several failures I've seen, it was always left side.
I also checked my VIN with the NTSA and nothing. Then I got the recall notification from Kia. It's not turbo failure, it's heat soak baking an oil hose and causing fires.

I HATE this as much as anyone. The risk may not be high. The pure speculation on other threads is that this is "just a high mileage thing" and no worries. Sure- that's all fine until the hose cooks and your car catches fire.

What the optimists are failing to understand is the very nature of twin turbo set-ups and the potential for heat damage. It is high. My local speed shop showed me a work order that just got done for this very thing. They said there are lots of turbo heat issues now that manufacturers are blowing smaller engines and abandoning larger, naturally aspirated ones.

Roll the dice if you'd like. I drive my Stinger pretty hard. I take lots of banzai runs between Crescent City, CA and Eureka, CA through the Redwood 101 corridor. I make several trips a year between CC and Salem, OR. Lots of river canyon carving, high speed passing, and sustained speeds on I5.

My dealership is 80 miles away in Eureka. I avoid them like the plague after my complimentary 3000 mile oil change and wire harness recall went totally sideways. It will be an all day affair with no guarantees of success. I may just go deeper into Oregon and rent a room, lol.

Idk, having to drop the engine and trans on any car would make me nervous if they don't do that kinda thing on a regular basis. Not just doing it at Kia. If I owned, idk a CT4-V and GM sent me that kinda recall, I'd probably feel the same way.

With that said, Kia dealerships have a reputation.
Where is the information this recall requires an engine/tranny drop? Is the turbo oil hose assembly not serviceable from under the car? Aren't they just installing a heat shield of some kind? I'm not aware it was such an ordeal.

That looks like a line that's already blown. Do they show any signs BEFORE they fail? I have a hunch they look fine right up until they burst, but that's not based on anything concrete.

My dealership always unplugs my dashcam and leaves it that way on pickup. But I'll take that since they've otherwise been pretty good so far and I don't want to try my luck at a 4th location. The devil you know...
