Kia K900 and Stinger Sedans Recalled Due to Fire Risk

Just a note to anyone who has not completed the recall yet. They replace both the coolant and the oil. I wish that I had known about the oil. They drained 7L of synthetic and replaced it with their in-house brand, 1,500 km after I had changed it.
The recall kit only comes with up to 3 quarts of synthetic 5w30 oil.

It's listed on the last page of the recall procedure under required parts .

Mine just says bulk..

I keep some records lol. I know, old badge, got it from a buddy.

It also says NPNENG5W30 Castrol Edge which is the exact part number for the synthetic engine oil from the recall

Your invoice also has a "3" before the part number for the oil, I assume that is for 3 quarts?

Thank you for pointing that out! Much appreciated!

I only highlighted this because, I believe they lied to you if they said they drained 7L of oil.

I am slightly biased/skeptical AGAINST Kia dealers in general. They have wronged me enough for me to feel this way.

They may have drained and replaced all of your engine oil, but that is NOT the normal procedure for this recall (unless you pay for an oil change).

They did not say anything about the oil. I only noticed it on my invoice. I assumed that it was non-synthetic due to the “bulk” statement. Nothing said about a filter change, so the partial oil change makes sense to me. Either way, it’s getting its regular 5,000 km synthetic oil change when it is due. I appreciate your due diligence on my/our behalf.

If a KIA dealership is using some "bulk" cheap oil, they are out of line. KIA uses Mobil full synthetic.
When you say "Kia uses Mobil" - do you mean "Your local privately owned Kia dealership"?

Kia actually recommends Total Quartz brand oil. But private dealerships seem to use whatever is compatible and cheap.

The advertising at the dealership I go to makes it look like it is a common feature of KIA service to use Mobil. I know about the Total Quartz recommendation in the manual. I wonder what the '22 and '23 manuals have in them?

For the brave souls that do go in I wonder if they will be without a car for weeks while KIA techs scratch their heads and jump around the outside of the cars like monkees for 3 weeks.
This is exactly what I pictured.

I would assume that "bulk" just means it's being dispensed from their drums of whatever their standard oil is, vs. something ordered by the bottle. I'd further assume that a modern dealership working on modern cars would only stock full synthetic at this point.

Do any current model Kias not recommend full synthetic?

The dealership I go to which is a Nissan/Kia only has synthetic now. At least that's what they told me the last time I was there. They said they buy it in bulk now so the price is a little bit cheaper than normal.

The pessimist in me says that they say they get it in bulk and are charging less than before but it's not actually full synthetic. So you think you're getting a break but you're actually paying more for an inferior product.

I just received my notice in the mail yesterday, and up until the last few days a search of my VIN in the recall section of kia.ca had zero results, but now it's registered there. I read that line "...approximately 3 hours or more..." as being likely more than 3 hours, but I'll be watching this thread for the outcome of your service before I make my appointment. This situation might be worth the drive to Woodstock, where there's a dealership that is recommended, instead of the buffoons at my local east London location.

Finally did mine in Woodstock this week. No problems at all. Coolant level is fine after 100KM, no sloshing noises, and I can see they changed the hoses out with new ones.

That's good to hear, and reassuring ... how long did they have your car for?

They have you drop it off night before, and ready 5PM next day.

There was an issue with mine (oil feed tube stuck). They called me and asked for more time because they didn't want to rush it/break it. I dropped it off Tuesday night and I had some other work done too. I said take your time, do it right, and i took it back Friday morning.
