Concerns - Popping/Creaking Noise from Sunroof

I read a post yesterday about sunroof noise, and the owner observed that the rear edge seal doesn't align evenly: on the passenger side the roof is lower than the driver side. So at least some sunroofs have this seal alignment problem, which it seems to me would be easy to correct.

My car makes weird sounds. Driving down any imperfect road (we got lots of them in Seattle) it sounds like it's raining (got lots of that too). The sunroof makes little pitter patter pops. This is different than when I back into my uneven driveway when it groans like it wants to spit out the glass.

There are a few threads floating around about the noises the car makes.

Some people are having good luck with different types of grease applied to the edges.

I have that dreaded sunroof noise as well, but it only started at around 13k miles. I only notice it when my music is off or real low, though so I'm going to just live with the racket.

Same. When Metallica is on it’s not a problem. But sometimes I need a little quiet

Two words...rubber grease.
Scan the forum there is a post on how to fix this.

Just for the record, no squeeks or rattles here just some road noise from tires. (In Oz we spell it tyres)

Tyres looks more upscale than tires. I appreciate the suggestion, and will have the dealer do it. I am lazy

Your car is twisting and flexing as it drives over uneven surfaces, it only normal the hear the noises and creaks as long as they are not sustained. My optima used to creak when i drove into my driveway at an angle. My stinger doesnt.

I've heard good things about Honda Shin Etsu grease...

open a file with Kia Canada , they have a 1800 number on the Kia Site , trust me your dealer will NOT have a clue

I was having the same exact issues as you were. It drove me insane. After trying various treatments, the one that worked for me and removed the sound 100% was applying this to the sunroof trim as well as the trim the sunroof attaches to:

https://www.amazon.com/DuPont-Silic...s=dupont+silicone+lubricant+with+teflon&psc=1

I let it cure for about a day or so and it got rid of most of the sounds. By recommendation of the Kia tech (who claims he couldnt hear the sound) he told me to try the Shin Etsu grease. I applied this quite liberally to the same location as the silicone spray above.

No more sounds and this was applied over a month ago.

My car goes in next week to replace the trunk closure mechanism , and to review the sunroof issue again ( they say they are pretty sure they KNOW what is is ........................I'll send them a pic of the Honda Grease as a reference point )
Thanks

Damn. I tried shoving my Shiba Inu all over the sunroof... didn’t stop the rattles/squeaks... but did create a loud shriek.

Maybe I did something wrong.

Yeah, my sister's Shiba just got pissed and bit me. I had to get the tube version of it to work properly.

OK , so I went to Honda today and purchased a tube of the Shin Etsu silicon grease ( $29 inc tax cdn ) I cleaned the rubber gaskets in the front of the sunroof ( all that I could reach ) applied the grease with a q tip then rubbed it in thoroughly using rubber gloves ....................it didnt change any of the creaking , ticking at all . Of course with the roof opened slightly it completely stops , and it starts again with the roof tilted up or closed . My conclusion is that this is not a lubrication issue . On a brighter note I did grease the top of the front door gaskets and beleive this does have a positive impact , lets see what happens over the course of the next few weeks ..........

If it is not the rubber, something must be loose within the sunroof/mechanism that is now under tension/not loose when the roof is open. Something could also be out of alignment. I've wondered if the wind buffer that pops up when you fully open it might be a source of rattling for some people? Can you wedge your hand up there with the roof closed and see if you can press that part down away from the roof? That's all I have to offer for advice for now...

When you push up on the front frame of the sunroof it makes the same creaking sounds , it goes in Tuesday and I'll report back what they find

I applied it to the ALL of the rubber trim of the actual sunroof itself, as well as where slides into the body, not just the front rubber flap, that wont do anything.
