Concerns - Popping/Creaking Noise from Sunroof

Yeah, I'm not all that surprised. Hyundai/Kia sunroofs had issues during those years. Even 2015 Genesis Sedans had the issue. I'm not sure about 2016 but probably. I know 2017 has had the issue rectified so I'm very confident the Stinger will be fine. We haven't heard about any complaints yet and the car has been on the streets (as mentioned) in South Korea and now in Australia. I think we're good! :)

Hey everyone, sorry to disappoint you but my stinger gt is just going in for its first check up service.. Its done a little over 3000km and have been experiencing clicking & Rattles from the sunroof.. It very annoying especially when there is a constant ticking noise above your when cruising on a smooth quiet road.this only happens when the roof is closed so there definitely is an issue!.. As i am writing this i am waiting for a technician to go for a drive with.. Lets see what they can do???.. I bet this is going to be a long process.. I didn't pay $60,000 AUD for a car to here that crap....
I'll keep you all posted.......

our 2012 Sorento did that for a while..the tech heard it, lubed everything up and it was still doing it. We made another appointment for a couple weeks later as he wanted their master tech to check it out. About 3 days after the noise stopped and never came back so never took it back.

Hey,,
Mine is at the service centre now,, the technician heard the noises, hopefully can do something but I'm not holding my breath on it??... probably have to replace the sunroof in the end?.. who knows?..
keep you posted

Hey Everyone,
just an update.. Got the car back yesterday from service & unfortunately there was nothing they could do immediately, the car has to go back in for the whole day as they need to remove the headliner to get under the sunroof, this is concerning me cause I'm worried that even if they fix the rattling noise they would probably ruin something else or probably end up with more noise as things are never the same once things are removed..There has only been 1 other case reported here in Sydney so they are going off that ?. What should I do ,is it worth the risk? but I have to say that for $60,000 I shouldn't have to out up with abnormal noises..
What do you think?

So ive been having the same issue. Of course the Kia tech couldnt hear it, but he told me to buy some Shin Etsu Honda grease from amazon and that would fix it....I asked him why he couldnt have done that since he said thats how they fix noisy sunroofs and he just shrugged...worthless. So I applied some and it definitely helped. Just got a q tip and applied it on liberally on all the rubber parts. Lets see how long it lasts.

My car has been doing it for a while too. I only heard it when the radio is off, thankfully. Only way I've found to make it stop is to open the roof.

It makes me feel better knowing others are having this issue. Typical first model year problems.

If the Shin Etsu grease doesnt work (i have my doubts) then Ill have to go the velcro tape method. Hate having to do this to a 50 grand car but what choice do I have? See this link.
Panoramic roof creaking noise.

Looks like it worked well for them but where would we need to install it? Same location based the Tesla's?

They're both set up similarly so I would say yes, same location.

I'm really hoping it doesnt come to that. I already lathered on that Shin Etsu like a greasy car salesman.

I also tried that fabric tape like some suggested. It was great as long as you didnt open the sunroof. The second you do, it tears right off. Mine went flying on a state trooper behind me. Thought for sure I would get pulled over but he didnt. Fail.

First world problems.

I used another rubber grease and it washed away and the creaking came back. I agree, makes no sense, maybe it didnt absorb into the rubber? No clue.

Anyways, I left the car parked out in the hard rain last night, drove it around at lower speeds on less smooth roads today and so far its holding up.

I can confirm that this stuff will fix 90 percent of the sound from the sunroof:

First, I sprayed this around all the rubber trim:

I waited a couple days and it got about 70 percent of the creaks done so I took it a step further and bought this:

I have put about 350 miles on the car since saturday and the noise has drastically been reduced. I applied a liberal amount of it around the sunroof trim and the rubber where it lines up against the roof and barely any more sound! The car is so much more enjoyable without listening to it squeaking and creaking around up there.

Have you been back to your dealer since your last post StingerDog18? What dealer in sydney did you take it to? I've booked mine in to get looked at next week. Getting a lot of creaking from the sunroof/drivers headliner area! I've lubricated all seals but no luck! The noise is driving me crazy

Have you tried searching for Penrite rubber grease? I am pretty sure I saw that being available in your neck of the woods and that fixed it for many people. I cant get that stuff over here without paying a premium.

Ours has recently started doing this, even rattles sat still with the engine running & makes occasional popping noises when open. I did notice today when looking at the roof the passenger side sits slightly higher, possibly due to the rubber weather seal sitting behind the back edge of the sunroof on the driver side and slightly under it on the passenger side.

That sounds eminently fixable. Something so visible seems incredibly obvious to a vehicle inspection after assembly. But you know how routine most jobs are and how bored humans get by daily routine. The inspection is only as good as the inspector! Go in and get that sunroof glass adjusted to sit perfectly aligned.

My car makes weird sounds. Driving down any imperfect road (we got lots of them in Seattle) it sounds like it's raining (got lots of that too). The sunroof makes little pitter patter pops. This is different than when I back into my uneven driveway when it groans like it wants to spit out the glass.
