What did you do to your Kia Stinger today?

One of the best books ive ever read is
A Speeders Guide to Avoiding Tickets
Written by a retired state trooper. Full of tips and tricks. Alot has changed since it was written but without a doubt it saved my ass a ton of times. Ive been pulled for countless violations tint, vehicle height, speeding, and so on. Lots of warnings and fix it lists but only 1 real ticket. I was pulled for 20 over, twice in the same month in the same stretch of road and got warnings both times so i definitely use what i read

Elantra N knob swap + IMHO.

While I agree the stock T handle doesn’t work in this car, the “easy” plug and play N swap doesn’t look stock. I think this is the best solution. At least without going totally custom, which I didn’t want to do. This is mostly just a knob swap, but I used the silver N collar as the boot retainer so you don’t see it, and it looks as factory as the stock T but not a T.

I used super glue to hold the boot on the ring as well as the ring on the knob. I had to do this, because when you wrap the boot over the silver N ring it’s too tight to click the ring into place on the N knob, so it kept falling down. I also used a Sharpie to color the red stripe black. The results speak for themselves. Looks so much better than stock to me. This is how it should have come from the factory.

Looks good, although it looks a bit large in there imo.

Thanks! It’s actually smaller than stock and doesn’t really stick up any higher. Or do you mean the ring inside the boot?
The top photo, looks like the handle sticks up a bit, although it could just be the angle of the pic.

I miss my N-line selector. I agree it's better than the goofy throttle-lever-thing.

The stock one looks like it belongs in a boat. Seems out of character and I've never really liked it..

Reminds me of the stock shifter I had in my 89 GTA. Which really isn't a good thing. Gaugerings4.webp

I've had multiple tinted window tickets on every car I've ever owned that had tinted windows. Which is why I was really hesitant to get tint again after all these years but my car is an inferno inside at times. Doesn't matter how nice I've been to the officer. I've done the roll your windows down trick and you know what, they've told me to put them back up so they can test them. They see my face, I'm getting a ticket automatically. You probably wouldn't understand.
That sucks. It sounds like you have police who are way more strict than they need to be. Hope you have better luck with this one.

Was it an easy process? How much was the Elantra knob and where did you get it?

Looks really nice. Though I actually don't mind the stock T handle surprisingly.

It was very easy. Hardest part was unclipping the boot from the console cap. And that wasn’t too hard.

Here’s where I bought it. Ships from Korea.

More carbon!!!
That dang shifter is a pain to remove from the boot.
Dealt with Element6 directly. Very nice people.C322D279-A2DD-4A25-9D84-E6945F69E1BF.webp

Trick is not trying to. Just cut it off. Takes 30 seconds.
I sort of adopted that method. Just snapped the little barbs off with dental pick and pulled it off the boot.

Looks good! Got a lil dash envy going on. Now lets focus on the excellent music selection!

Swapped the KN filters with SB. They are a little shorter and wider. Still managed to fit em in the JT boxes. Might rock em with the covers off, can hear the turbos more that way lol.

I do several long road trips a few times a year. Destinations are usually random but routes there are anything but. I try to plot a course that involves minimal interstates and incorporates country/secondary roads as much as possible. Technical, windy roads are more than welcome.

Problem - onboard gps sucks for making custom routes. Using something called mapsource or basecamp software with a garmin is ideal. Route is designed on a big computer screen then uploaded to the gps as a .gpx file for it follow. Where to mount the gps?!@#

The old honda had a nice shelf for the suction cup - http://images.gtcarlot.com/pictures/97113859.jpg . Great for the 7" garmin DS65 model. The stinger has no such shelf and fitting this huge gps on the lower left obstructs visibility and is just too big.

From years ago I still have the driveluxe 50. It's a 5" model that includes a magnetic mount and portrait mode.

driver view - front view - side view -
The pics make it look like the bottom right corner is blocked. From the driver's perspective it's not. Garmin is really only needed on long trips. Most times I'll have nothing there or the phone mount (still need to figure out android auto).

this might be a dumb question but why not use android auto or apple car play? can easily map custom routes with that. It looks like you got the new widescreen so even more options.

In a word, familiarity. I've been using the garmin platform (mapsource) since ~2008. I can whip up a route very quickly. Shaping and savings routes with google maps is still clunky.

Maybe I just don't know what I'm doing. I go to maps.google.com, enter start/destination, adjust route to my preference. How do I save it?

Using the "send directions to phone" only sends the start/end points and google recalculates the fastest route, not the custom one. Using google my maps is somewhat a step in the right direction but provides no stats, distances between points, turns, etc. Because the area traveled through is usually very rural, fuel/break stops are included. Finally, because areas are so rural, cell coverage becomes an issue too. I have att which helps a lot, but there are still some dead spots too.

What I used to do in the G was have the route on the garmin, but use the built in nav to zoom in/out as needed.

You can make a custom route on your phone also. Use the app and input your start and destination. Then add a destination and more it between the start and end. Keep doing that untill your happy with the route. Screenshot_20210811-115543.webp
