Used Stinger GT Market Info

I missed updating in February. Here's April's numbers. Doesn't look like listing prices have dropped any more than expected despite everything going on. Although, I expect dealers might be willing to negotiate more at the moment.

Note on the "lowest prices" chart: there are some GT2's available under $32k, but they're all high mileage for their age (45k+). I've excluded them as I always do with extremely high/low mileage or damaged cars.

Missed ya bro lol, I'm hoping for high to mid 20s by fall

I just got through with an article in Jalopnik by Tom McPhee? WHoever the guy is that has the car-purchasing middle man business. He said car dealers were not giving deals right now, and were pretending that everything is great. He was sort of mystified as well. Also, I have noticed sales data analysis from Edmunds indicates March April and May to be the **worst car buying** months out of the year. Eg, there are fewer deals available, with April being the worst. Maybe we are just running up against ingrained scheduled behavior at the moment. Must be somethign like that, it's not based in reality for sure. Also, politically motived shopping is occurring, I have also read, with certain sides of the electorate out shopping, and being in public to make a political point. So perhaps those folks picked up the slack for dealers, possibly offsetting somewhat the massive decrease in overall consumer purchasing.

I'm in auto lending and we are on Pace for a record month.

Interesting. I wonder how sales compare regionally. Texas hasn't been hit nearly as hard by the virus as NYC, Detroit, and some other areas. The state also hasn't locked down as much as California, for example.

Right, I am in Alabama, and MS, AL and GA don't seem to be shutting down, dealers are open, people are shopping. There are deals, but not what you would expect given the sales data nationally. Although, the Stinger is a low volume, high price item, it may be what's happening doesnt' affect the Stinger so much, eg, maybe the people who want to buy stingers, especially used, are prepared to pay more regardless. The best deal to me is a 2018 or 2019 GT2, they seemed to have fallen really far from MSRP unlike a GT Null, where the current fire sale price is a much smaller percentage of it's MSRP. I would think the other motivation would be the new stinger coming up in 2021, with newer looks, more power, better interior tech. I guess that fire sale happens in August.

Looking at 2 in New Hampshire (I’m from CT).
2019 black gt2 500 miles $43k
2019 ceramic silver gt2 14k miles $38k

lease buyout still seems like a better deal but no idea what may incentives will be

Here's the latest used prices. The GT1 has seen more of a drop lately than average, while the GT and GT2 have seen less.

I hear what you are saying and I am not saying anyone is wrong for buying a used Stinger. Each person’s situation is different. I personally wouldn’t do it but I understand why someone else might do it.

However, a car is ALWAYS an investment. It just happens to almost always be an investment that depreciates. The goal is to reduce that depreciation as much as possible.

The issue seems to be that the depreciation is not consistent. It has sporadically gone down in large increments. That is hard to judge.

My biggest concern with the used car is how was this car treated before I got it. We’re they doing launch control drops at every stop light? Were they braking hard at every stop? Or were they simply driving it around like a normal person?

You don’t have to worry about any of that with the new car. You can treat it how you want to right from the start.

My biggest fear with the Stinger is maintenance costs. This car has to be expensive to repair and I wouldn’t want them to deny a warranty claim because of how someone else had treated the car before I got it.

For me the price of a new car was so close to the prices of the used Stingers they had on the lot that I couldn’t possibly consider the used car.

Someone else may have found a Stinger used for much less and then it may be an option for them.
A car is NEVER an investment. Who told you that?

What am I missing? If I'm reading this correctly it looks like the "Lowest Price" for a GT 2 is higher than the "Average Price" for a GT2. Same for GT1 and GT

It looks correct on my end... maybe double check that you’re following the price lines? On the left chart (average) the GT2 mark is just over $35k. On the right chart (lowest) the GT2 is just over $30k.

That's what I get for trying to multi-task. Boring conference calls....

Is this wholesale or retail pricing? Maybe I missed that detail as well :)

These are just listing prices since I don’t have access to any wholesale pricing. Every region’s pricing is different, and cars vary widely in mileage and condition. I’m just doing this to give a general idea of depreciation and list prices over time.

I disagree. An investment doesn't necessarily mean that the expected return is from an appreciation in value of the underlying asset. You can invest in something that will end with no value but provide a lot of utility over its lifetime. Cars fit into that bucket.

E.g. A business invests in a backhoe to dig holes faster. The backhoe itself isn't going to appreciate over its lifetime, but the business will generate more income by finishing jobs more quickly.

Owners can expect wholesale, trade values, to be roughly 5,000 less than the average prices of retail at average miles of 15,000 annually.

Thought I'd share my recent Stinger purchase story. I watched the market for three months on the Stinger using CarGurus, Craigslist, Autotrader, eBay, and an assortment of other car selling sites. I wanted either the micro blue or sunset yellow, definitely the GT line or higher, and didn't care what year. I saw a ton of '18 yellow GT's on CarGurus listed for about 3-4k below the price of similar stingers in diff colors. I would call these places up and it was the same god damn story every time. "Stinger is really clean, low miles, but it has three shades of yellow on it." If I was LUCKY they would disclose that to me since a lot of these cars were over 200 miles away. Once I had a dealership not say anything and I paid to have it inspected by a 3rd party shop and guess what? Yup three shades of yellow on it. The dealership ended up refunding me for the $120 inspection I paid on it but I wasn't happy. The sunset yellow was very difficult for people to match. We all know about the recall on the paint, most owners opted to give the car back and get a refund or trade it for a different color/trim. Very rarely did the owners decide to ship it back and have it resprayed because it would take in upwards of a month to do it from what I hear. So when people gave their yellow stingers back, Kia corporate would sell these cars to dealerships at a very reduced rate. These dealers in turn would throw a garbage paint job on it for $800 and only have the plastic repainted since I believe the metal didn't have any adherence problems, or vice versa, I forget, and then sell it at a a low price to consumers (some unknowingly).

That takes us to my actual purchase! I found an AWD yellow GT in Wisconsin (I live in MN) with 27,500 miles on it, tints, 3M clear bra protector, full weathertech (even trunk), and a full set of extra rims with snow tires mounted. I paid $28,800 for it. Someone earlier in the post said all yellows that got repainted are marked as lemons and/or other blemish on the title which is not true whatsoever. If someone knows differently please post your source. I investigated the shiz out of the paint job on this car and the original owner opted to have this whole car resprayed on Kia's dime for $12,000. I keep watching the market and that's a tough price to beat, especially for AWD. Sorry for the length of the post, hope this helps someone else!

P.S no luck with micro blue. Found one private party listing GT AWD '18 w/ 15k miles on it listed for $29k. Talked the guy down to $27,700 only to find out later he was leasing it and we would have to break his lease, yes a logistics nightmare that I refused to be a part of.

Great info on the yellow, if other people can back that up... it's worth a sticky. Quality sprays aren't cheap, so your statement is very believable .

On the other side, if someone is looking for a fast fun car to mod if mess with, poorly resprayed yellow's should be a great deal.

Disappointing update on my car's paint, will include pictures.

Did a thorough wash/wax on my yellow girl on an overcast day and noticed for the first time that my trunk's shade of yellow was different than the rest of the car. On a sunny day it's extremely difficult to tell, which was the case when I picked it up. I believe my paint job is still legit, but I can't make sense of the mismatch. I did some research that showed it's possible that the exact same shade of paint can absorb and show up differently depending on the material being painted.

I'm mad at the dealer for not telling me when I specifically asked about different shades, I'm mad at the 3rd party shop that said the paint all matched and was rock solid, I'm mad at the original owner for sending his car off for a month to have it repainted and either accepted a mismatched trunk or didn't notice it, and most importantly myself for not having seen it when I picked it up. I'm in love with the car and the color but I would have loved to use that color mismatch to my bargaining advantage over price. Anywho... Here's some pics of her:IMG_20200609_142654.webpIMG_20200621_182500~2.webpIMG_20200621_182419.webpIMG_20200609_142641.webpIMG_20200609_010946.webp

Here is what my car looked like after the recall and what it looks after I paid to get the plastic pieces repainted.

It's really difficult to tell in pictures since the shades are so close, if there's any shade difference at all that is. Looks good man, thanks for sharing.
