Update 12.5 Adds Bluetooth Messaging and...

I’ve been trying to talk my wife into getting the update for her Optima so I can try it. When we bought the Optima a few months ago Bluetooth messaging was the one thing she missed from her Nissan. I found Bluetooth messaging clunky and limiting in my Nissan relative to CarPlay so I only used CarPlay. Maybe wireless charging plus Bluetooth messaging would win me over. My wife thought it was crazy talk that neither the Stinger nor Optima had it.

I agree with your wife ;)

3 month old Stinger - I called Customer Service just now, they offered to send me the new version on a new SD card. They said they only other way was for me to pay for the download, and they would reimburse me, which would take 8 weeks. I'll wait a few days for the new SD card.

Took 4-5 days to get here. Just installed it from SD card and the process took 20-25 minutes.

I offered to install the update in her Optima today but apparently she likes CarPlay now better than however it worked in her Nissan for whatever that’s worth. I’m pretty sure the Nissan just had a screen pop up like it appears the Kia update adds. She likes using Siri now. I have a feeling I’ll install it down the road if I get a phone with wireless charging and install the wireless charger.

One thing that might be nice is if it’s easier to notice there is a message versus CarPlay. I keep my iphone on vibrate and found there is no text ding on CarPlay unless I flip the silence switch on the phone.

Is this update available for download somewhere, or is it possible for someone to upload the contents? It's just files on an SD card so I'd hope Kia would offer download as an option.

It is available as a download (from MNSoft), but unfortunately the only way to get it currently is as a bundle with the latest nav map. Somebody else's files wouldn't be of any use, as they are keyed to the specific car/head unit.

Thank you for the info about MNSoft. I was curious so I went ahead and paid the $145 for the download version. Since I didn't pay for the nav option on my vehicle ($2000!!!) I didnt think it would work, but the update completed and my Stinger now has the update, and nav along with it! Next, I'm going to see if I can decompile the installer files through an .apk editor (it's Android based) to figure out the algorithm that handles the code validation.

Update on my case number: heh! you didn't know I had one. Neither did I. The SD card came so quickly (back in July) that I forgot all about it. I just got off the phone with Kia customer service, reaching out (somewhat late, but oh well, they did it and that's what matters) to make sure that I had received the SD card. I said, "Case closed". And I thanked them for being on top of it. So this is a thumbs up for Kia.

Are you kidding!? You got nav when you didn't have it before?! Congrats! And confirms this whole process by KIA is even more ridiculous than I had previously opined.

Sounds like the dealer was trying to rip you off by not installing the SD card and activating the navigation. In hopes of getting you to pay $2k more for it. If you got a 2.0T Premium, GT1 or GT2, the navigation comes with the vehicle. Which trim did you buy?

Just curious.... I have a GT, and was wondering if 12.5 would add or,change anything with the system in the GT.

I upgraded a couple days ago. I have not noticed any changes, other than now having text message notification.

Ok. So it doesn't add nav? Not that I would expect it to. What route did you take for the update?

How do I get text message notifications to work?

I have an iPhone, and I did have some issues getting it to work. I ended up deleting my phone from the car, and the car from the phone, and re-paring. Also make sure in the phone the "show notifications" button is turned on (under bluetooth\<bluethoth device name>

Hi everyone. Not sure if anyone’s updated to 12.5 but they’ve made some great improvements and I can confirm it works well.

- sms messaging on iPhone now works via Bluetooth.

- import/export POIs works great via USB

- Voice memos can be recorded to the car.. you can save directly to the SD and then export to USB. I don’t remember this before

- a few other things like better map graphics.

Overall, major improvement from V12 which I update to just last month..
Do you know exactly when V12.5 was released?

Really? I thought I got v. 12.5 back in June. What version was that? It updated the version in the first MY17 and early MY18 Stinger.
