Why can't I start the car and then lock it to warm it up/leave it running and secured as i run into the gas station?

If someone gets in your car without the key and depresses the brake the car should shut off. They have to press the brake to put it in gear.

Do I need to explain the meaning of the word lock?

No you just need to be a little less rude. Not sure why you want it locked nobody's going anywheres with it. Theres probably a good reason for it though.

You need to add remote start to your car. When you start the car with the remote, it stays locked. When you open any door, it shuts off. So, if pulling in to a gas station, all you have to do is shut it off, get out and lock it, then start it with the remote.

It's a Hyundai thing. My mother's Elantra wouldn't let me walk away with the engine running and lock the doors either. That was the first time I experienced this.

It's a matter of safety I think, what if you lose the keys or something...

So nobody can steal his Twinkies , Doritos and Big Gulp ! oh wait thats what he went into the store for ..............

I wish we could lock the car while running. I used to leave the Maxima run is I was just running in quick. I have items in the car I'd like to keep in there.
Nissan/Infinity will let you.

No worries here in Germany about that..
leaving the car running without driving is not allowed ... so is Remote start.

one time I had fun with ice on the windows .. you come in after you done, warmed yourself up - breath gets to the windows inside and is freezing from inside .. glad the doors were shut as I was freaking out and nobody heard me..these moments you give a ... about it and run the car while sitting in ..waiting for defrosting inside ^^

Are you sure about that? I've driven the car a little ways without the key being in it.

First off. The car can be driven if it’s running without the key. It’s can’t be restarted once shut off.

I believe the OPs concern may not be that someone will necessarily drive away with the car but maybe he just wants to keep the contents inside safe from passers by?

Either way. I agree. It’s stupid we can’t lock the doors once it’s running.

Why not just turn it off? You’ll conserve fuel and at least your car is still there waiting for you when you come back.

2 feet of snow and -20C is the reason some of need to keep our cars running while not inside.

Softy. Its been below -20 here for over a month and I still kill the engine during short stops. It’s surprising how much fuel an idling engine uses.

That's a personal choice, not a need. Myself, I never leave it running, or use the remote start. The engine gets up to temp quickly, and with the heated seats and wheel it's the most comfortable car I've ever had in the winter.

On a related note, when I was up near Edmonton last week the car sat outside overnight, and started with no problem in the morning when the temperature was -35C (before wind chill).
