Sunroof Rattle Fix

Well my friend heard from the dealership who said that the glass company wanted a lot of money to remove the sunroof and the expense now has to be approved by Kia. The dealership said that once the glass is l removed they will have to cut, remove and install a new frame. My friend just wants his Stinger back, but it might be a while.

Are you, I mean err "your friend" going through with it?

Have creaking sounds emanating from above the rear view mirror where the headliner meets the windshield. Took it to the dealer and they brushed it off saying there is nothing they could do about it despite hearing complaints from other Stinger owners. Wasn't very impressed with their bull shit answers (Compared to a new unit and noise is 'NORMAL'!!!). I will give this a try and see if it fixes the issue.

I am from Edmonton, Alberta. Not sure why it says I am from USA (lol). I lodged a complaint with Kia Canada today and I showed your post about replacing the sunroof frame to the service manager and he wasn't too interested. As you said they are absolutely worthless and looters at best. Thanks for posting your fix on this forum westcoastGT.

Be polite and persistant , Kia Canada approved my fix , they should fix yours too !

In case anyone is following, my friend heard back from the dealer. They got the glass removed and are ordering cables for the sunroof. They said the cables were slipping not allowing the sunroof to raise up and move back. I still find it hard to believe the 4 small pieces of tape he used would have caused this. I wonder if it was just a bad coincidence or he really did mess it up?

Is this particular dealer in the south, north, or west? I've dealt with one and have deemed them absolutely useless regarding these issues.

I went ahead and opted for silicone. Yesterday I applied a strip to the problem area and let it dry overnight. Right now it seems like it's solid enough to stand up to the forces of the "foot" pressing on it.

I haven't actually closed the roof yet. I'm hoping it isn't too thick. I have my felt tape fox standing by just in case.

So a few weeks back when you posted this, I went the tape route to try to combat the “passenger side sunroof ticking” that I had on every road condition. On the Passenger side only I put a piece of (thinner style) 3m tape cut to the dimensions of that “well” where the sunroof “foot” rests. It took awhile to get the piece to stick, used goo gone and other cleaning stuff on the surface and it finally stuck. I also peeled off the top red cover layer of the 3m tape and covered it in a equally sized piece of black electrical tape. So far it still is sticking and my sunroof has been quieter.

Its Kia West Edmonton. Absolutely useless and rude service advisors. One of the service advisors goes on to say that she has the same rattle noise in her 2010 Hyundai...

Well don't bother with the south one either, I've dealt with the service manager and my complaint was considered normal because another new Stinger on the lot has the same rattles. Normal and acceptable quality are two different things. They were not motivated to do the work whatsoever. At least they weren't rude.

I've heard complaints of the north side dealer as well from others, so maybe Sherwood is our last hope?

That was exactly the same reason they gave me at the west end dealership. Did you file a complaint with Kia Canada? Apparently they are unaware of this issue since not many have complained to them. I would urge everyone having this issue to file a complaint with them so that they can investigate and issue a proper fix/recall.

This was started over a year ago , they know about the issuen , my roof was about $7500

This is the happiest I've been with my car in a long time!

I found the issue with my sunroof. The rail that the glass rides on has a protrusion coming down. I think it's a foot for the sunroof to rest on. It's circled in the below pic.

Now, the sunroof housing has a cutout where that foot meets when the glass is closed. It can be seen circled in the below pic.

When the roof is closed those two peices are bumping against each other causing this noise.

In the next video I'm pushing down on the glass to replicate the clattering sound.

In this video I just shot the noise is gone. I'm pushing down hard enough to squeeze water out of the rag I was using to clean up the grease job I'd just done to the sunroof.

Something has to be placed between the two circled areas so they don't clickity clack against each other.

It may not be the same for everyone, but that's my fix. Unfortunately there's so much grease applied to my rail I couldn't get the felt to stay put permanently. This weekend I'll clean it up and find something more appropriate to apply. Now I don't have to deal with Kia ripping the car apart!

To reiterate, this probably won't fix everyone's sunroof Rattle as I believe there is more than one cause. But hopefully it'll help those who have the same problem as me.
That rattle sound is 1000% identical to mine , tilt the roof up and it’s gone.

I bought some marine silcone to put in the little "foot rest" of the sunroof. Worked perfectly in terms of sticking after it cured. Had zero effect on my problem, which is the constant ticking. I can imagine it would help if there was a rattle. I have never had the rattle, only the annoying ticking that disappears when you close the inner roof liner or if you open the roof even 1 mm. But if it is closed and in use as a moonroof, tick, tick, tick, enough to drive you to distraction.

Its sounds like the headliner clips around the inside edge. Push hard up to re-clip them, you should hear them click back in .... but they may just come out again ... and may need dealer warranty fix to resolve them fully.

I read about that and tried it already. No indication of any clips that had slipped or were unattached. Everything is solid. I have low mileage and do not drive on rough roads. I have also had the entire roof area lubed by the dealer in a failed attempt to fix it.

What area of the headliner are these clips on? around edges, middle, etc.?

I did the silicone adhesive in the "foot" and it reduced the sounds (tick, no rattle), but there is still some present. Yet I only hear these ticks predominantly when it's warm out and the car has been under the sun for a few hours. In the cooler mornings, very little...

.
Around the sunroof opening. Push hard. If it is that problem, you'll hear an audible click as it pops back in.
