Stinger GT vs. G70

The G70 and Stinger were run on the same dyno back to back (to allow for similar, if not exact, testing conditions).

Here are the results:
  • G70: 285.97 whp / 359.19 wtq
  • Stinger: 267.17 whp / 354.42 wtq
  • Q50S Hybrid: 251.82 whp / 352.97 wtq
The G70 put down almost 20 more whp. That is a pretty big disparity for the same engine/drivetrain. Maybe they "tweaked" the tuning for the G70 as a little "insurance" since it is from the flagship Genesis brand and they needed to make sure it was faster.

Wow. Check that out... I had a feeling this was going to happen. So the G70 gets a little tune for increased boost to ensure it's faster than the Stinger. Sure, I understand that as it's the more expensive car from the South Korean "luxury" brand. So I have no issue with it. But good to know - and I'm not surprised...

Once the reality sets in, a few cosmetic changes, some miles, an oil change or two, and when someone comes out with one, I might get a tune for the Stinger.

Tune for tune the Stinger and G70 will end-up about even, performance-wise. I don't think the weight difference is going to be all that noticeable...

There are already piggyback and ECU tunes in foreign markets. For a Stage 1 tune (no additional mods) we are looking at gains of around 70-80 whp.

I know the big name Korean tuners have acquired G70's for testing/tuning. I have been watching their work on the Stinger very closely. I would have to agree that the "tuned" versions of both cars will max out at the exact same place, even if the starting numbers are lower for the Stinger.

I think the weight difference may impact the numbers by a few tenths. So maybe the G70 gets into the 11's first :D

Those numbers can't be right, that would be a 27% drive train loss which is huge and the performance numbers don't support that. The GT should have around 310-320 whp.

AWD vehicles with automatic transmission can definitely show that large a drive train loss. Also, don't get too hung up on dyno numbers. There are too many variables that can have a large impact on the results. Even the dyno type can make a huge difference. They don't call the Mustang dyno "the Heartbreaker" and the Dynojet "the Dreammaker" for nothing. They are a good tool for comparing changes (i.e. modifications) under the same conditions where the delta is the most critical number. In this case, the dyno was also useful in comparing different cars under the same conditions.

Are we discounting the possibility that the G70 just has a tune with more boost?

Doel is saying the dyno readings are too low because both the Stinger and the G70 are factory rated at 365 crank hp.

The difference between the readings is still valid. The G70 likely has more than 365 hp as a result of aforementioned factory tune alteration. Just like the BMW 340i doesn't actually make 320 hp.

There is another slightly shorter YouTube video with these 2 guys taking the G70 on the road.Main takeaway in my view is that the G70 is a bit more mild mannered as far as driving dynamics compared to the Stinger but the Kia might be more fun to drive. As a daily driver the G70 might be more appropriate for people who don't push their cars that much on a everyday basis and value comfort a bit more.

That is a very interesting take away given that the exact opposite is true. G70 leans enthusiast and the Stinger leans nice ride. Neither are performance cars. Just a sport sedan and a grand tourer.

I found G70 VS Stinger GT drag racing video. Racing starts at 2:20.
I recommend you do not believe this video..

Many people suspect there is a problem with the stinger they used (heavily driven dealership test car vs their own car).
They dyno'ed both cars at 290 (G70) and 270whp (Stinger). I have never seen a stinger that had less than 290, in all possible results posted online...
Other results done by owners show roughly the same hp and torque numbers for both cars.

By the way, the weight difference between both cars is only 80kg due to the shortened wheel base.

The G70 has been around for 5months here and I can say that the following two statements are completely wrong (or the guy tested a car with different settings):

"The 2019 Genesis G70, on the other hand, is tighter and more buttoned down, but its ride is also stiffer and a little less compliant. The electronically controlled suspension on the G70 is more aggressive in Sport mode, meaning you’ll feel the road more."
=> Many G70 owners complain that the ride is bouncy and prefer the stiffer ride of the Stinger.

"The G70’s steering, on the other hand, is quicker, more precise, and has superior weighting in Sport mode than the Stinger GT. It also reacts quicker to your inputs, which is especially helpful when you’re having a good time on winding roads."
=> I have never ever heard anyone saying so. And most Stinger/G70 buyers cross shop both cars...

I would wait for trusted reviews before making my opinion. Here many automotive articles are politically influenced and I would not be surprised if this review was a little biased towars the G70.

If I had a lot of free time I would translate some other korean comparison videos for you to see but easier said than done. :D

The above comments were given to a US auto publication and likely apply specifically to that market.

It is my understanding that suspension tuning for Korean market models is "night and day" different when compared to US models. With Korean models being much softer with ride comfort getting the primary emphasis. I suspect steering is tuned to match as well. Some Korean market Stingers were even provided to US testers and their impressions confirmed how "soft" they were compared to the models set up for the US. Since Genesis is the "luxury" brand they likely went softer than the Stinger there as that is what Korean market customers equate with luxury.

So I would suggest not looking to Korean market reviews for either model if you will be buying in the US.

Yes a lot of what you wrote is correct.
It is wise to wait for US reviews to find out about the subtle differences between the two cars.
Not only for performance but also options and things such as color selection.
