Stinger vs. G70
  • L: 190.2 / 184.4
  • W: 73.6 / 72.8
  • H: 55.1 / 55.1
  • WB: 114.4 / 111.6

Weight: Nothing official but both 3600 – 3800 lbs. and 3800 – 4050 lbs. are floating around. Stinger GT AWD looks like it will max out at ~4150 lbs.

Fuel Economy (Korea): 21 combined (same as the Stinger)

Tighter back seats with less head/leg room (front seats needed knee cut outs for additional room) and cramped foot well.

0-62: 4.7 (0.2 better)

The G70 is bigger than the Volvo S60, BMW 3 series, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Cadillac ATS and Jaguar XE. About the same size as the C class. But smaller than the Audi A4, Infiniti Q50 and Acura TLX. The Stinger GT is larger than every car listed above.

AWD: A couple of "confusing" points. There is talk that even the AWD version will have a rear limited slip diff. Also, the AWD system was "tuned" to feel RWD. We know the Stinger GT AWD will not have a limited slip but I can't imagine the AWD systems are tuned very differently.

Driving Dynamics: It appears the Stinger GT is tuned for understeer at the limit and the G70 is tuned to be neutral. All the first impression drives for the Stinger and the G70 are in pre-production models so no impressions for the "final" US version yet.

I know the Genesis will be considered the more premium vehicle but it's sounding to me like the Stinger will be a much better buy - especially after price comes into play...

I thought there might be more "differentiation" between the two. I am assuming (there has been no official confirmation) you still get the 36 months of free maintenance, pick up for service, etc. stuff from Genesis (things you won't find at the Kia dealer). But I was also thinking we would see some small tweaks. Like a slightly better audio system, maybe a bigger infotainment screen, etc. There are more premium interior materials (quilted leather, etc.), a little G90 tech (posture control system) and a slight performance increase...........with a much less usable back seat and decreased cargo capacity.

I agree, price is going to be a very big factor here. I also thing the badge thing might come into play. Do people feel better about having a Genesis badge on their car vs. a Kia badge.

The midsize G80 Sport w. AWD is $58k, so where does the G70 Sport slot in price wise? $50k maybe?

Just wondering how this will affect the pecking order in terms of price between the G70 and the Stinger. I can't imagine they'll be priced equally, as I think Genesis as brand is intended to be a step up from Kia. Hoping that this portends to the Stinger falling into my desired price range.

I will say though that the G70 interior looks very nice, though the attempt at mimicking the BMWs infotainment screen is a fail in my eyes. The trapezoidal shaped frame works with a rectangular screen, aka the BMWs 10" displays, as it looks more proportional to the dash, but it looks like it's plopped on the dash in the G70. It's as if Genesis wedged the squarer 8" screen from the Stinger in there, and it's too upright.

There's probably some more parts sharing beyond the powertrain going om b/w the G70 and the Stinger.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
I've really given up guessing the price of anything, but yes, the Stinger should be at least a couple thou' less than the G70, if only because we won't be having anyone showing up to take our cars to be serviced, and if we wait for service, we'll have to sit in the waiting area with the giant rodents.

And yes, the G70 is attractive, but my first thought was, hmmm, a Q50? But I do like that vent in front of the door. Now if it only had a hatch.

The G70 looks generic. Even the name "G70" sounds generic. Pass.

My expectations are that the G70 prices will parallel the Stinger and be about 6 or 7k less than the G80. IOW around $50k optioned up.

I can't imagine the G70 costing anything less than a couple thousand dollars over the Stinger at all build levels. The G70 will come with service amenities the Stinger doesn't have and is higher up in brand hierarchy. If both cars are priced the same, I think Kia will lose a lot of sales to badge buyers...

All great opinions here.

Here's my opinion from a 2014 Genesis Coupe owner and driver.

I absolutely LOVE the car and if/when I do get a Stinger, I'm sure I'll miss certain aspects of the car. I LOVED the idea of Genesis branching off. Not because they are breaking away from the floating 'H' but because Genesis would now get the attention it deserved. I still get comments like, "DAMN! That's a sweet car! What is it? A Hyundai Genesis? No shit! DAMN SWEET!" every now and then. I am, however, disappointed that they are going into the numbers game. G70, G80, etc, etc. I just never really liked the fact that car manufacturers have started naming their vehicles with numbers, regardless of the manufacturer. Sure, they may look damn pretty but I just like the sound of "What the hell was that that just went by? A Stinger? WOW!". It sounds better than "What the hell was that that went by? A G70? What the hell is a G70?". To be frank, I probably won't get another Genesis car for that reason. I like being behind the wheel, and would rather be behind the wheel, of my Genesis Coupe than a Genesis G70. It just sounds better to me. Hehe

I think at least right now - people can get away with just calling it a "Genesis". That has enough meaning right now. Later on as people realize there are more models, it'll need that number designation to describe what it is. For the time being I feel most people value the G80 and G90 about the same. "It's a Genesis". Perhaps even so with the G70. But I agree that real names are better then numerical nomenclatures. I'm pretty sure the Genesis G60 will be a coupe based on the G70 and I bet most people just call it the "Genesis Coupe" as it'll likely be the only coupe in the lineup.

I found G70 VS Stinger GT drag racing video. Racing starts at 2:20.

The result with the G70 is as expected, lighter, smaller and probably has a slightly more aggressive tune than the Stinger even though they claim the same power output. What I am disappointed about is that the Stinger is unable to pull on the Q50s Hybrid on the top end, that means the Q50 Red Sport will absolutely rape the Stinger.

If you look at Q50 Hybrid vs Red Sport videos online you will see that there is no comparison, the Red Sport pulls on the Hybrid with ease.

Okay, but the Q50RS also has a 35hp advantage over the Stinger GT. (Both are 6TTs, and appear to be almost identical weights.)

Right, I'm really not that surprised... I thought the Q50 was also quite a bit smaller on the inside...

Thats true, but the way the Q50RS leaves the Hybrid feels like the difference is more like 60-70hp. Not sure about the weight, I figured the Stinger was significantly higher in weight.

Perhaps Infiniti under-rates the Q50S the way BMW does to their vehicles...

Comparing the AWD Q50RS to the AWD Stinger (I will use C&D's results) we see about a 0.3s advantage for the Q50RS to 60 and then 0.4s in the 1/4 mile.

Q50RS AWD:
0-60: 4.3s
1/4 Mile: 12.8 @ 112 mph
  • The HP advantage for the Q50RS shows most relevantly with the trap speed. Where the Q50RS traps about 4 mph faster.
  • The AWD Stinger has a slight weight disadvantage based on the figures being tossed around for the AWD model.
  • The Q50RS also does not have any sort of launch control. So it is brake torque and go.
  • Both models have complaints about a "slow shifting" trans.
The Stinger compares more closely to the Silver Sport Q50 in price. But it is down 100hp (vs. the RS) and much slower than either model listed above. If you are going the tune or piggyback route you can add 130hp or more to the Q50SS. The only real differences are that the RS has additional cooling changes. So your "tuned" SS will heat soak sooner than the RS will.

Lastly, the Stinger numbers are MORE impressive to me because they were generated using regular (87 Octane) fuel. I have seen models gain several tenths in acceleration tests when switching from 91 Octane to 93 Octane. I would imagine going from 87 Octane to 93 Octane may allow it to run VERY close to the Q50RS with a slightly slower trap speed.

My two cents.

Korean language track driving comparison of the Stinger and G70. Legitimate English subtitles can be enabled (not just auto-translate)! It's a half-hour long, and I haven't had a chance to watch/read the whole thing, but they seem to cover a number of topics that have been discussed in this forum (weight, suspension setup, manual-mode shifting, etc.) There's even an interesting part where they couldn't get one of the cars (the G70, IIRC) to accelerate coming over an incline on a curve...something like that.

(These are the same guys that did the excellent Stinger #2 delivery video; it's their company car.)
