So I installed Borla exhaust

Galpin Auto Sales gave Salomondrin a Thermal exhaust which is similar in price to the Borla. If you don't know Galpin is a legend in LA for being an official dealer for most brands that also does the best custom work around. If they chose the Thermal exhaust I bet it is pretty damn good. There are videos of it on youtube and it sounds like a good compromise as far as noise goes.

Here's my Thermal review.

I am intrigued by this number. Is this a lot or little in the US for an exhaust? Is Borla seen as cheap? Or expensensive

Borla and Themal are around $1000
Soon to be realeased Magnaflow is about $1250, Ark is $1500 and 3.3 Stingers cost $40-50k

Anyone in the GTA with a Borla installed? Would love to meet up to hear it compared to stock. Curious to see the difference inside the car before I make a decision.

Cheers

I have been looking at both the Borla and Thermal exhausts and my main concern is drone while driving on the highway. This is a GT car meant to be driven on long trips and I plan on doing that. If the cabin is full of drone to where I can't enjoy my music or talk to my passengers then I'm not interested. I'm looking for something to free up the air flow from the restrictive factory exhaust, add some noise under WOT but at cruising speed I want to be as close to stock as possible. For you guys with the Borla, how is the drone? I've read that some people are adding some noise reduction measures in the trunk which I'd be OK with doing.

I've got the Borla and I have added a bit of sound deadening in the spare wheel/battery area (the butyl and foam stick on stuff). Really easy to do and definitely improved the drone. The car is still loud when you put your foot down, has a decent growl and bark, but now has no drone when cruising and is actually pretty quiet out on the highway.

I drive everyday for about 30 miles on the highway doing 70-80mph which is right in that drone area. It’s definitely there, but doesn’t affect me listening to music or my wife sleeping during the commute.

I would honestly say, this would probably bother your average driver. If you don’t like drone, Borla isn’t for you and I’d recommend evc exhaust.

Everyone is saying no drone but I feel like throwing up after 40 minutes of driving. I'm not sure if it's just my tolerance or messed up the installation. But it's definitely loud as f just cruising on the highway

When people first started getting the borla and ark exhausts for their stingers there was a lot unhappy drivers talking about the unbearable drone. I was one of them.

I resorted to sound proofing and getting the exhaust modified by an exhaust specialist. It worked but I still get reverberation in the transmission tunnel that rattles the front console.

What did you do to modify yours?

I have the Thermal and it actually sounds nice inside. You can hear the exhaust but it is no fatiguing at all. Halfway between Borla and stock imho.

I dynamated the whole boot (trunk) and used dynaliner under the boot flap lid. Also dynamatted under the back seat.

I ended up going to an exhaust specialist who repositioned the mid pipe further forward, he reduced the flow through the pipe slightly and added two extra resonators to the pipe work. All in all the drone is down about 70%. Without this in my view the car was undriveable. And this is coming from someone driving a WRX with a canon exhaust.

So I covered my wheel well with dynamat xtream. This stuff is magic. Got rid of 70% of drone. I don't hear anything on the highway now with radio set to volume 20

Dont notice any real drone on my S-Type. I installed it while the wife was at work and she hasnt complained once so far.
I seriously think each one of the borla have different sound / built quality. The descriptency between what people think is just too much.

Lovely :) Wish such things were legal here in Switzerland. That's a nice loudness, not too much but rumbly. If it doesn't drone or annoy inside, it's perfect.

You not the guy with the Tubi-Style valve exhaust. That is EU legal nowadays....

Nah, it's not getting louder, it's getting deeper!

At first, I liked the sound but it sounded LOUDER. As it gets deeper, the sound is not louder- just a constant rumble. I do wish the BURBLES were louder. I smile like a kid driving this car, your foot is the volume control. If you want to be heard, you can be heard. If you want to be quiet, good luck, quiet goes away as you turn up the volume (or gas). I said all along I'd prefer an EDC (like xforce varex) offers, and I've drawn up that setup for possible future use. Until then, I'll enjoy my $1000 Borla system.

voon, don't worry, Europe is still safe! But you may hear my rumble as I go by...

Does this tone down if you're in eco mode? I want it to be loud when I want it like pushing it and such, or a good cruise on the streets and I can hear it kind of thing. But is it like super loud to the point you wouldn't want to be coming into a neighbourhood in the night or early morning.

What you are thinking about is a system with valves. The Borla is not one of those.

Sorry not this EVC. I read that in Eco mode some catbacks like the mbrp are a bit quieter in Eco as less power is put forth? Just wanted to see if that concept applied with the borla.

I don't think so. The modes does absolutely nothing to the exhaust.
