3.3TT Quicksilver Exhaust Systems

I am on the stock downpipes. I didn't want to remove the cats, nor do I want to spend another $300+.

he bent at the curve from the rearmost bracket to the muffler right before the helmholtz, and on the inside of the curve going into the muffler. pass side muffler was too far out. he bent the mouting pins that slide into the rubber hanger as well.

Thanks for the info
I have also hollowed out the secondaries to help remove restrictions

You're probably right, did some reading and it seemed to eliminate road noise more than anything. You have aftermarket tips? I'm looking at these at the moment

Yeah I’ve had both the round and oval ones. I recommend oval because they fit without trimming and look more oem.

There is lots of info in the “exhaust tips” thread including links to various sizes on AliExpress

I slid the passenger side exhaust can back 2" last night, but i haven't gone on a test run yet. We'll see how it goes. I might be looking into exhaust tips, but I want to keep them in a stainless finish.

That's a lot.

the photos i took above were before the installer did the heating and bending, so he must have moved it back a bit. the passenger muffler pipes are now inside the stock diffuser ones as in the photo. driver side they are same. I also ordered some wrap to try to seal up the opening.

not sure about tips, since the alignment isn't 100% right -- i'd probably have to go back to the muffler shop to get them to line up right before the tips worked out. I hope between sliding the pass. side back and getting the wrap on there that I can get that drone out. otherwise it'll probably be back to stock and a FS post in the classifieds for me.

I've had aftermarket exhausts on every BMW I owned, and none of them did this. I attribute some of it to the complete lack of insulation back in the hatch area, but i already applied dynamat and an extra thick layer of rubber weightlifting mat back there and under the back seat, which helped for road noise, but not so much for the exhaust.

Not sure if you noticed, but on the stock system (Thermal R/D has it too) there are plates welded near the end of the pipes exiting the mufflers. Assuming those prevent the sound from bouncing back underneath the car, exhaust tips would also direct the sound right out the back. Mine is like yours in that its not perfectly aligned either so I wonder if having plates welded like the stock system would work?

I only get it when cruising at 90+ Kph which puts the engine around 1.4k RPM or more, get none in city driving. It's extremely minor though, having a convo with some one you would notice it but it wouldn't drown out the talk.

I did see those plates, but they look more cosmetic to me than anything else, since they're not right up against the bumper. We'll see if moving the passenger side one back made any change once I can find a reason to get out of the house today.

I drive with a very light foot most of the time, so i'm usually at or below 2k. There's no noise when i'm not putting load on the engine, but it's very boomy with even a light touch of the throttle. enough that i have to turn the radio up from 5-6 to 10.

Above 2k rpm it's beautiful though.

Going from stock exhaust to any solution will be a huge shock with this car. There's no way around it. Honestly, this exhaust is the best solution unless you go with EVC exhaust no other exhaust solution has gone with a rippled H-pipe to deal with the drone.

Install dynomat underneath your spare tire and then install dynopad underneath your cargo mat if you have one. That's what I did and it makes a significant difference.

Does the "boomy" sound at lower rpm cause any cabin vibration? Rear seats, center tunnel, etc?
If it does not cause any vibration, which others have reported, it may be "resonance" instead of real drone. in that case, hopefully tips will get rid of the boomy sound.

I had already done that, although with the home depot version of dynamat (roof repair tape). i didn't cover every square inch, but a significant majority, more than enough for it to do its job of stopping resonance. Instead of dynapad i used weightroom mats, but i just ordered a roll of MLV to replace that with. also did both the tape and mat on the back seat and the vertical metal support for the back seat as well. also got some of the roof repair tape in the doors. the car is as deadened as can be on a budget.

does anyone have the diameter on the QS exhaust pipes? i might just go ahead and try some tips.

I think what I initially took for drone is more of a resonance in the cabin. I get some minor vibration and boomyness in the back seat/trunk area but the drone I thought I witnessed on my first drive is even less noticeable. What you're saying is definitely a better way to describe what I've experienced.

There is now an option for the next production run on the Quicksilver website. It will be a preorder deposit of $250 US, and 20 units needed to start the process. Discount will be 50%. Shipping currently is not included, but that will change shortly, with possible different shipping options being discussed, and free being included , but not 2 day as it is now. Quicksilver will be completely redoing the master plans and jigs needed for 100% bolt on fitment. The new iteration 2.0 is to be called the Supersport. Enhanced sound and fitment is key. Thanks to our feedback, they have the desire to delve deeper into making the best sounding and performing aftermarket exhaust out there. Currently sorting out a few different finishes or ceramic coatings, if that is an option some would like to see. But right now I am just spitballing, and seeing what I can get for us.

Has anyone kept the stock catback and installed the QS secondaries? I received mine last night and anticipate installing this weekend. Just curious to know if there will be a difference in sound.

I was looking at pictures of the stock exhaust and it looks like I will need to purchase some bolts, washers, and nuts for the forward flanges as the stock secondaries have studs. I'm assuming I can use the studs and nuts that are currently used on the stock catback for attachment purposes on the secondaries. Are the bolts reusable for the underbody attachment on the frame?

FWIW, this video doesn’t exhibit the booming drone I heard on mine yesterday. I haven’t taken it out for a spin since I moved the passenger side can rearward.

so i finally took it out for a spin, and it's much better. not eliminated, mind you, but better than before. Makes me want to go down the route of aftermarket tips, but that means $100 for tips plus probably another $$ for getting the mufflers straight enough to mount them. I might be able to ask the shop for some discount as they just mounted the mufflers, but I guess I won't find out until the tips show up, which could be more than a month out.

Sorry to hear. I don't have drone, but I do have an exhaust note, which is why I got an aftermarket exhaust.

Get it straightened first then re-evaluate.

I am wondering the same thing.

So I was taking a look under the car to try to wrap the pipes, and the inside pipes on both cans are closed off. I don't have the stock one to compare to right now. Is that the same as stock? We have fake 4-pipe exhausts?

Nope. Quicksilver is the only exhaust I’ve seen that only uses two tips.
