New Stinger Recall

Haven’t seen anything in any of the info about that. I would think that if that were the case they would have zeroed in on the fix pretty quickly.
You'd think.

I hate rodents, (from Latin rodere, "to gnaw").

I found a mouse nest on my cabin air filter, which is not far from fuse box. Apparently some cars are prone to having mice nest on cabin air filters, and apparently wiring insulation is soy based which is tasty to mice. I wonder if there is a connection...maybe rodents damaging wiring around HECU

Curious what Kia's recall solution will be. A block of cheese and some mouse traps? Perhaps they should rethink the whole hamster thing. The marketing is to good as to many rodents are moving into Kia's....

apparently also toyota's... my parents neighbor 2 month old rav4 acted like a dead battery very strange electrical behavior.... found out wires were chewed up and mice droppings in the engine bay.. they do live in the country though but they didn't have those issues with their chevy nor my parents with their hyundai and honda..

Back in my Navy days we had a fleet of 20 or so Chevy pickup trucks that were just parked at the end of our lot, not being used for anything. One day our mechanics got told they were to get all the trucks ready for shipping overseas. None of them would work right. Turns out rabbits had torn the wire harnesses to shreds.

Anyways I came here to post that Kia sent me the memo about my 2019 GT2 being within the batch of at-risk vehicles. If I recall correctly it was built in may.

Hi Johnny,

This could be funny, but I bought my 2019 GT2 from Smithtown in March also. I remember the finance manager saying that two other people picked up the last two white on red they had and no one wanted to touch the orange special addition. I was happy that I got the last black on black.
Hope you are enjoying the car.
Ha, small world indeed. I would've gone for the black, but my last car I had for 8 years was black and my wife wasn't feeling it anymore. It's a family car, though mostly mine ;) so we went with the white on red.

I enjoy the hell out of this car and I hope you do as well. Kevin in Service is a stand up guy, I've been very meticulous on my tire balance service visit as well as the first oil change, all went very smoothly.

here is what the fix will be, from NHTSA website...
"Kia will notify owners, and dealers will install a new fuse kit in the electrical junction box, free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. Owners were notified of the safety risk with an interim letter on October 26, 2020. A second letter will be mailed once the remedy is available."

Great news. I just talked to my dealer. The part is not available yet but will be soon. My dealer has 15 people and since I called when I got the letter I am number 2 on the list. I would call your dealer and get on their radar. There will be many of us in this situation.

Would love a pic of the fix if anyone can get one
Agreed. Interested to see what is meant by a "new fuse kit"? If it's a bunch of new fuses that they swap out i'm not quite sure that is going to solve any issue other than serve as a placebo...

Not placebo. Fuses are used to limit current in a circuit effectively protecting the wire from overheat. I predicted this fix and reasons why I thought they may be doing it in this thread (Post #56)

Yes that was a good call. Looks like you nailed it.

There are fuses that exist already (obviously). I'm interested to see if this is a like for like replacement of existing fuses or some new additional fuse kit.

Exactly - if it's just swapping some fuses, I can do that myself..

Fuse kit, so they’re installing net new fuses to protect a potential malfunctioning circuit? Interested to see what circuit gets fixed and why it didn’t have a fuse already.

also curious about what causes the short to begin with; defective units, chaffing wire harnesses, etc.

they are removing the ESC wires from the main one hundred amp fuse. And putting them on individual 25 amp supply fuses. The repair kit comes with 2 25 amp fuses to be placed in open unused positions and two new extension wires will extend the stock ESC wires to the new fuse location. Making it so a defective hecu unit will pop the fuse/s without having to exceed the existing 100 amp and overloading a wire. Easily a diy doable deal. I will be doing a write up once of vacation

Yikes, 20 models of Hyundai’s and Kia’s have been recalled since 2015 for fires? I have faith they’ll make things right because I absolutely love this car. At least this isn’t as bad as the takata airbag, chevy ignition or Toyota gas pedal recalls.
