New Intake

That said, I also wonder how well they'll [edit: the aFe BladeRunner Aluminum Hot and Cold Charge Pipes] will jive with various aftermarket FMICs. Seems like there’s a limit to how much one can get away with “bolt on” improvements before they start to intrude on one another’s assumptions about what space is generally available under the hood and behind the bumper.

They should be ok, they only replace where the OE filter boxes sat but they are a little larger.

My bad, I should have clarified -- I was talking about the aFe BladeRunner Aluminum Hot and Cold Charge Pipes that were mentioned earlier in the thread. :D

I want to know how well *those* will jive with aftermarket FMICs. Whole different fitment question. :)

[edit: ...and as I mentioned before, I have the Injen Short Ram intakes, so there's also their own shape and routing to consider, and whether they'll collide on the top-end with the BladeRunners. ]

Do you have VT snorkels installed ?
If not, have you at least removed the restrictive little ducts up front ?
Don‘t have VT snorkels installed.
Only the rectangular sections in from of the OE air boxes were removed.

Gotcha . So just spray on and let dry ?
You definitely don't wanna let it dry. Soak it with cleaner for 10min and than spray it with water until clean. Let it dry for a day or two. I am using my stock filters while aem ones are drying.

Is it worth the money to have a spare set of filters.

Considering those filters are probably specific to those air boxes, I'd say yes !
Put the clean ones in and clean the dirty ones and let them dry at your liesure :)

That’s what I’m thinking, I can get a pair delivered by an OZ stockist for AU$249 & to buy direct from the US it would be almost $280.

Probably one of the biggest restrictions in the OEM system ( IMO ).

Spay on the cleaner, be sure to wash your hands afterwards because the cleaner is a corrosive. Rinse the filter from clean side to the dirty side after about 10 to 15 mins, then let the filters dry off.
So I see it’s multiple ways to wash the filters . @Ohiocruiser stated another way But both seem pretty straightforward and logical .

Interesting...removing these ...any pics of the after? Would seem as if it lets in almost as much air as VT?
Good question. Removing the stock snorkel would open it up as much as possible because the maximum amount of intake is determined by the area of the holes through the radiator support.

It is possible that the VT snorkels can increase air intake via either ram air or the venturi effect, but I can't verify any of that.

Only pic I have which would show how it would look is this.

WITHOUT DUCT.jpg

The airbox inlet is still shielded from direct airflow but flows better than with the duct.

@dddd (fellow Aussie) measured the drop in restriction from 9 to 4 inches when removing just those ducts.

However, the Velossa Tech ducts actually create positive pressure in the airboxes above a certain speed which gives a more profound result again.

Here's with the Velossa Tech installed for comparison's sake.

Shame the JA air scoops were discontinued a while back. They're huge. You see how big they are behind the grill of my car.

Wow, those are YUUUGE!

Does the primary rad still function with those in place?

I actually prefer the Velossa ones as they're big enough to do what needs to be done.

IMO, the JA ones are too big and will create almost a drag effect and create extra load on the mounting points ( assuming you're travelling at a decent speed most of the time ).

Also, with Velossa's you get more direct air than standard, which in turn means more bugs and dirt / dust directed towards the filters ( yes they should be changed from OEM and cleaned more often ) but with the JA's, 'significantly' more so.

But, to each their own.

No & I don’t plan on it, happy the way it is.

That's fine. Your car your choices.
It just means you new air boxes ( as things are A.T.M ) are more for sound and looks than gains.
But I suppose you could pull those removeable plugs out of the airboxes for more air if you wanted to.....:sneaky:

To each their own :) Enjoy
