I hadn't thought of that. The drive is a 3.0. I assume, then, that the port in my GT is a 2.0?

I don't know for sure if the one in the GT is USB 2.0 or not but manufacturers often cut costs in weird places. I would suggest maybe trying to get a hold of a USB 2.0 drive and testing that out. That's all I can really think of.

Theoretically it shouldn't matter. The USB protocol specification says that all USB devices are supposed to work in all USB ports, if one or the other has to drop down to a lower USB standard (say a USB 1 device in a USB 3 port), it is supposed to accommodate it.
Of course, this is in theory, if industry standard chipsets are used for the ports and devices, then they should behave according to spec, but you never can be 100% sure.

before I do this with a replacement SD card, what is the procedure via the engineering menu to downgrade if I don't like it? The card that is in the car now is already a replacement with last year's April upgrade.

Can't downgrade because if you did the latest upgrade (one prior) you can't access engineering mode anymore. Have yet to find a password that works

So you can downgrade, I've successfully* done it from the latest version. The list of passwords is below.
The method of entry is the same, go to the update screen and tap the bottom left 10x then the bottom right.
If you do left 10x first, it might ask if you want to do an upgrade. If thats the case, tap the right side 10x first before left. It might be 7x as well. Its finicky.

* The issue with downgrading is it doesn't downgrade the voice pack. So kia's shitty inbuilt voice functions don't work. It will say something about a voicepack mismatch. I was unable to resolve this issue and upgraded again.

Also, anyone with Canadian Stingers on the latest version.... can you tap the "voice navigation" on your mirror and say a location, and see if it routes? Mine works maybe once, but then it wont work for the rest of the drive.

If you use the normal nav menus or the voice on the steering wheel it works fine, just the mirror button is sketchy. Wondering if it's just me.

Mine is f&*%ed up like yours. Works less than half the time. You get the no network whatever error too? I've been plugging in my phone and using android auto more as of late because of this when I used to actually use the build in nav quite a bit for the HUD directions.

Sometimes works, sometimes error, sometimes it doesn't offer a route and goes back to the map. Their telematics network is garbage, even uvo has constant server errors. Seems related to prime time... at night things tend to work half decent.

I always use android auto but the wife relies on that button when she takes my ride.

Tried updating my 2018 GT2 and keep on getting error 107... I've tried files from the Updater Tool and two setup zips from various people from Google Drive and MediaFire. I actually hashed all files in all 3 versions and they turned out all to be the same. Any ideas? I'm trying to upgrade from CK.USA.SOP.V098.180821.STD_H
