LSD.....

Does anyone know the name of the manufacturer who builds the LSD (Limited Slip Differential) for the Stingers ? I heard somewhere it was a British manufacturer. Just curious, I priced out a new LSD (Limited Slip Differential) and there was 1 in the country to my understanding and at $2400 too.

You can't just install a LSD in the AWD without reprogramming the transmission and torque vectoring software... I think even the RWD software would be different with and without LSD. What are you contemplating?

Was possibly considering having a LSD installed in my car when timing permits. Wasn’t 100% sure if it would fit but was toying w the idea if it can be done.

Mine is a base RWD GT.

I've seen people put oem LSD module on both 2.0 and 3.3 that came without one in multiple Korean websites and forums. Kdm stingers have LSD only on top of the line GT trim or 2.0 with dream edition package IIRC.
You have to replace the whole diff at once to make it easier tho. And yes, I'm talking about rwd only.

The Car Of The Year was just before the Geneva Car Show. The last 7 cars in the round were tested a week before. The Stinger also was there (finished as 4th) and that car ALREADY had these options. So maybe it will be earlier than August. They mentioned a mechanical SPERR for the AWD versions, which is great, like M BMWs :)

"That car" already had which options? Can you provide link or tell exactly which model and options was the one nominated?

Who is "they" who mentioned SPERR and what the heck is SPERR (German for LSD or is it advanced E-LSD like on a Nissan GT-R or Subaru WRX)?

"They" are the journalist, who tested the cars. SPERR is LSD, however I'm not sure which version will be in Stinger, but as far as I know a good type, like BMW M ones.
The options are (talking about the 3.3 version full, only one you can buy in Switzerland)
1, LSD/SPERR for AWD
2, 6dB louder exhaust system at higher rpms
3, real manual option for the automatic gearshift (like a BMW), so it's not switching up at high rpm

These are the same options already tested in France and discussed a while back in this thread. Excellent to know that the official test car had these already. Any web links about the Car of the Year to corroborate this? I threatened to delay my Stinger order because I want the car with these three and will be pissed beyond belief if they become available right after I get mine.

Here is the official link to the Car Of The Year (it's a European car award by journalists): Car of the Year

I have a link for the test of Stinger from a Hungarian journalist, but it's only in Hungarian language, try google translator, main idea should be okay:
Év Autója, döntős autók: Kia Stinger
This car already had these options, I already asked the Kia Switzerland about these options, but they have no clue :(
So I delayed my car swap for a while, as still can't choose: Stinger, BMW M240i or waiting for the new MB A Klasse AMG (like the brand new A Klasse, however I don't like MB)

Thanks! I am sure other local KIA offices will be equally clueless.

The Google-translated article says that the gearbox is a DSG. I had not heard that and doubt it. I do believe they might reprogram the shift logic on the existing transmission to make manual mode truly manual. Is it your understanding that there is a DSG in that car? If true, it would have been mentioned in every article, so I will go look for some English and other languages. I still find it astonishing that a car was nominated and tested that has parts or options not available anywhere in the world. There must some rule against that??

In fact, it is all the same story...

The COTY testing was in France at the UTAC Ceram testing grounds, so the Russian "spy" pic above in this thread was most likely just the COTY testing in progress. But was the paper in the window a single model for journalists to try out and give some feedback? Or did the actual COTY candidates have those options? The mystery deepens...

The COTY journalists got THAT car :) The article is about the car they were test driving on the track. DSG mentioned, however I doubt it also.

So what does the NON-LSD models have? What happens when you floor it on gravel or snow? I can't imagine it is the old "one wheel peel" from the 60's with an open differential. Can someone tell me if just one wheel spins?

Non-LSD cars do torque vectoring with brakes only. LSD does it with the LSD and I am sure the brakes will kick-in as a secondary aid. This is a handling issue.

The one-wheel peel on slippery surfaces is also an issue, as you mention. That would be almost completely eliminated by the LSD. Again, without one, we have to rely on the selective braking by the computer of the wheel that is spinning faster. If the car did not have the fancy traction and stability controls, we'd get the one-wheel peel on RWD cars. The AWD will shift power to the front, lessening the likelihood of a peel on dry pavement to almost zero, but it could still "peel" on snow or ice or very wet surfaces, causing the centre diff to have to shift back and forth to compensate (which it can do quite quickly).

For most users, the computer's ability to rapidly apply the brakes is fine. For someone interested in a sporty handling car and proper mechanical function, the LSD is essential. It needs to be an option in the AWD Stinger for those who care about these things. That's not too much to ask when it already exists, has been tested and comes as standard equipment on the sister car (Genesis G70 AWD in Canada).
