Kia Stinger Rear Hatch Rattle

I had my recall kit installed yesterday. It is way better but I heard it a couple times when hitting an abrupt bump that kicks the rear end up quickly. Keep us all posted if they're able to make yours better. (And how they fix it). I can't get to dealership for a while. Thanks
It was the same with me.. if you read the TSB, it’s very specific about the torque specs of the bolts, the washers used in the kit, etc.

Mine kept rattling after the “fix” from the dealer, so I unscrewed the bolts and checked.. first, they were over-torqued. It took everything I had to unscrew one side. They’re supposed to be torqued to something like 4.3 lb/ft.. no way was it torqued to that spec. Second, they didn’t install washers on one side of one of the bumpers. I went and bought washers from Lowe’s, installed to the proper torque settings, and like magic, the rattle was gone.

I’m irritated that the dealer didn’t follow the 7 step, easy to read instructions provided by their higher headquarters, but I’m glad I was able to fix the problem for 10 minutes and $.40 worth of washers.

This was on Monday.. I’ve driven all over the place and it hasn’t made a peep since.

Unfortunate that you had to fix it yourself. You might let your Service Writer and or Service Manager know.

can you guys tell me from the time you went into the service dept to get this checked in for this service bulletin did they get the part kit to fix this my dealer told me after 2 week the part is on back order and it will be April, getting rather pissed about this

Picked up my Stinger on December 8th... was told today that mine is affected by this TSB... I haven’t noticed the rattle... but then I haven’t driven it since the middle of December... I get my winter set of rims early next week! -39 C with windchill tonight! Joy! More waiting!

Mine is back. Mind you, not near as bad as the spare tire bouncing around, but I will be taking it back this weekend.

Here in the UK we don't have the repair kit but dealers are adjusting the D catch in the boot / trunk by 1-2mm downwards and adjusting the rubber feet so they just touch the body and then adding an extra 1/4 or 1/2 turn.

Apparently the rattle is caused by the side supports / guides not making contact (worse on the left hand side).
No rattles in my car and this fix sorted out the problem on another customers car.

Might be worth considering if the repair kit does not fully solve the problem.

Mine isn't a fair estimate, because apparently before I bought the vehicle the rattle was noticed and the TSB parts were ordered.. I brought the car home, noticed the rattle, called the service department and was informed that they had just received parts for my car. Apparently there wasn't great communication between the sales and service departments in this situation.

Where can we get a list of affected VIN numbers as my Stinger is arriving in February and I’d like to check if my VIN is on that list
Kia has not released a list of VINs and I imagine they probably won't. I'm sure they feel that people who aren't even experiencing a problem (yet) will come in for the repair - and flood their repair bays...

I'm sure the dealers are putting the fix into all new deliveries if they are affected .

Right, and I'm sure any Stingers produced since the TSB have already been updated as well. There will be a limited amount of issues moving forward...

I go in tomorrow morning (Friday) and will report back. I have a copy of the TSB that I will leave in the car - just to make sure.

I’m going Saturday to give my dealer a second chance at getting the rattle fixed. Thanks for mentioning some of the directions. I think I will try to tactfully share with the service guy. I hope they get it this time. It’s all I listen for when I’m driving now. OCD sucks!

Looks like the fix is simply adding a spacer to the base of the hatch bumpers. Is this correct? Given unavailability of the remedy kit, seems like one could fabricate it. How thick is the spacer and what is it made of? What is the name of the screw driver tip that is needed?

I don’t think it would be easy to fabricate.. it’s some kind of hard polymer on both sides of the trunk.. the fact that torquing the bolts matters means that milimeters make the difference between rattle and no rattle.

If you’re a brave soul, it’s a torx T-40 bit.

Just took mine apart to check their work. All appears correct. 2 washers on each bolt and nothing overtightened. But the rattle is still present over certain bumps. Maybe needs more of a spacer? I don't know.

maybe loosen the bumpers a half turn ??

Maybe check the bump stops at the base of the hatch lit.. try turning them counterclockwise in 1/4 turn increments and see if that helps.

I put a dab of water on the bottom of mine and closed the trunk to make sure that they’re touching the base. They were, so I didn’t mess with them.

If the torque specs are right in the TSB parts and the bump stops are set up correctly, it may not be your trunk lid.

Have you inspected your spare tire to make sure that the nut that secures it is tight.. anything loose in that little foam tray?

It's definitely the hatchback rattle. Don't get me wrong. It's definitely better than it used to be before the kit was installed. I've turned the bump stops out some too. I've looked at everything by the spare tire. All tight.

Just keep the pressure on your dealler , they'll get the issue sorted out , good luck !
