What's the difference between a dirty diaper and a politician?

While they are both full of shit, it's a lot easier to change a diaper...

I do have a problem. I really enjoy the Australian bent for puns. Some of those that keep piling on are really hilarious. I used to enjoy the joke thread, too. But it seems to be sliding over into politics, which I really dislike.

Name calling, innuendos, allegations and other forms of bullying are not funny or productive. Kids seem to start this at about 13 y/o as they are asserting their dominance and status. Most grow out of it, but there are some who never do - they just go through life searching for victims to bully. I believe the world changed significantly with the Johnson / Goldwater election. All of the above and many more kinds of smearing were applied to Goldwater, because all of the facts and history made him the preferred candidate by the majority. Until the campaign of libel and slander were picked up by the media and used to improve ratings. Goldwater's reputation and qualifications were so destroyed that Johnson won by (at the time) the largest landslide in history. I was horrified and unhappy that such actions could be successful.

But far worse, that approach was so successful, campaigns by all parties jumped on it and since then campaigns have descended into an indescribable, unbelievable cesspool so nasty that any candidate is so tainted they will never be above suspicion. And we have arrived at the point where the majority believe that all of our elected officials and their appointments are totally corrupt. I guess I fail to see the humor in that.

.................I don't disagree with your point , but Trump does it to himself , if he shut up and got off Twitter and did his job he would not be the target of so much negative attention . He is his own worst enemy , I think the Dems are muzzling Biden because Trump is doing a great job of undermining himself ........................

I am a great fan of puns and satire aimed at politicians. When in school, I signed up for any class involving political satire/political cartooning, and in fact took a class taught by the great Watergate-era L.A. Times cartoonist Paul Conrad. My masters thesis was about the Mark Twain/Chas. Dudley Warner novel The Gilded Age, which skewered the corrupt and/or incompetent politicians of the day. I share the best comments from the late night monologues and send an email of the best of the day's political cartoons to close friends every morning, and I know that they forward them to many more like-minded people. A lot of those jokes and cartoons are—deservedly—pretty vicious about current politics, and all the better for that. But I don't weaponize it by sending to people I know won't agree with the sentiment. Political humor won't change their minds.

That said, I've avoided political humor on this forum simply because it's an international forum and should transcend politics, and while I love sharing the latest vicious insult with politically like-minded people, I don't feel comfortable hanging out our dirty linen in public, or offending people who share my taste in cars but who don't share my politics. Have I gotten a laugh and passed on some of the political jokes from the forum to friends? Certainly! But as I said long ago here on some thread long lost, I come to the forum at least in part to get away from the train wreck of current world politics. Can we as a group get back to that?

And if you've got a really good one, you all know how to start a private conversation to pass them along to like-minded members. :)
