I learned today that if you mute the audio via the steering wheel and then change channels the audio resumes.
I have been playing with the LKA a little. First car I have had with it.You can read about the LKA (Lane Keep Assist) system including the "Hands Off Warning" and how it operates in the owners manual. You can find the owners manual at the bottom of this and every page of the forum in the Useful Links list.
To answer your question the Drivers Awareness being turned off has no impact on the "Hands Off" warning and subsequent LKA (Lane Keep Assist) system turning off. Here is the page from the owners manual explaining the "Hands Off" warning. First comes the warning, then comes the warning and disabled notice.

Agreed, i have wondered this too and have to believe it is due to "certification" or other rules regarding "self driving"Because if it allowed hands-off operation, it would be considered "self driving" which opens up many legal issues.
IIRC, there's a different system available on Korean versions that does allow the car to pretty much drive itself.
Like the Utah woman c. a month ago who was looking for "route options" on her cell phone while letting her Tesla "autopilot" do the driving. Onboard information showed that she had not touched the steering wheel for 80 seconds before plowing at 60 MPH into the rear of a fire truck stopped at a red light. She had been "driving" the Tesla this way for two years (and getting away with it)!? Unfreakingbelievable.Agreed, i have wondered this too and have to believe it is due to "certification" or other rules regarding "self driving"
I noticed a Toyota or Cadillac (not sure) commercial state "out first hands free driving auto" so that leads me to further believe there are additional certification or requirements that need to be met or proven.
I agree, however, that disabling the system when one potentially needs it is not wise. however, the other side of that coin is this...think of all the bad drivers who would turn it on and not think twice about doing anything other than paying attentiion to the road thinking the "car has this"
Interesting...i was not aware cars recorded stuff like this. I come from an aviation background and know for certain that aircraft can record this type of info. I suppose having cars do it isnt so unreasonable!!Onboard information showed that she had not touched the steering wheel for 80 seconds
Yep, tried it:Press pedal to floor (depress kickdown) and it will go to Smart/Sport. Really need to be on it and not just momentarily for SMART to activate the SPORT portion.
Yep, tried it:
On the way home I took the opportunity to get in front at the 33rd South on ramp. In "Smart" mode, I got around the corner quickly and pushed the pedal all the way. "Smart Eco" went to "Smart Comfort" and then glared red in "Smart Sport". Ah, you do have to stomp on it to get it out of "Comfort" mode and into "Sport".
(And I got to take "my" corner at the I-215 interchange at 80 mph. So the ride home was more fun than usual. On the way out to race slot cars, I got an average mpg of 26.8. On the way home my cavorting cost me and I only got 23.3 mpg.)
Until you back off the gas! I think. I was decelerating to enter freeway traffic at a "safe" speed of only ten over, watching for cops, etc. So I don't know for sure how long Sport stays up on the display. So how long does it stay in Sport mode after the full throttle "incident?"
hold on, you guys and gals telling me there is a light on the key fob? seriously?!It's on the key fob itself on the side. Pretty neat once you notice it.
ok, i now feel stupid. i see it. all this time. i just never looked. cool.hold on, you guys and gals telling me there is a light on the key fob? seriously?!
It's very small and under your hand when you hold it. So naturally it is "invisible". Also it doesn't really show up in broad daylight. It's an open secret among the elite. Now you are a member.hold on, you guys and gals telling me there is a light on the key fob? seriously?!

@Marc Collins: It is difficult to tell if "Smart Sport" stays active even if the display "Sport" disappears and is replaced by "Comfort" or "Eco". If you put your boot in it again the car will respond. It always does. And being "Smart", it is supposed to remember what kind of driving was going on a few minutes ago. Calling on "aggressive" driving again would make "Sport" more easily attainable, I think so anyway. The dash indicator is probably what mode it is in. So "Sport" drops when the indicator does. But "spirited driving" will call it back. Do we have to floor it to get "Smart Sport" back, though? I don't know how "smart" the memory is. Not enough experimentation yet to answer such questions.
