Hi all,

I am starting this thread regarding the recent recall issued on the 2019 and 2020 Kia Stinger 3.3L models. From what I have been able to piece together, this recall affects approximately 10,000 cars in the US and those impacted run the risk of the car catching fire. At this point Kia does not have a remedy at this time.

As a new owner to a 2019 Stinger GT2, this news is disheartening news and if anyone on the community has more information regarding an expected timeline/ recall solution please add it to this thread.

Here is the letter from Kia:
***REMEDY NOT AVAILABLE YET*** KIA MOTORS HAS DECIDED THAT A DEFECT, WHICH RELATES TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY, EXISTS IN CERTAIN 2019 MY KIA STINGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 3.3-LITER GASOLINE DIRECT INJECTION (GDI) TURBO ENGINES. THE DEFECT CAN RESULT IN A FIRE IN THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE COMPARTMENT, THUS INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY.
AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE MAY OCCUR WHILE DRIVING IN THE AREA WHERE THE HYDRAULIC ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (HECU) IS LOCATED, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY. ILLUMINATION OF VARIOUS WARNING LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL MAY OCCUR INCLUDING THE TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT, ABS WARNING LIGHT, AND THE MIL WARNING LIGHT. IN ADDITION, A BURNING/MELTING ODOR AND/OR SMOKE FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT CAN OCCUR.

What makes Kia think is only certain 2019 models? I believe I saw a review on Edmunds who had a 2018 that had the engine catch fire. If they don't have a fix what have could they have done differently to the 20 and 21 models? Hyundai Motors is also having some fire problems with some of their models.

There was only one fire on MY18 that made it to the forum; and the rumor was that it was a fuse in the rear, not an engine fire.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
i have a 2019 GTS, DAWD. Received the same letter from KIA.. Please keep all of us posted regarding any problems you have

I have been looking around the internet and Kia has problems with engine fires in many of there cars, optima's, soul's, sorento's. I was looking to buy a 2021 GT but Kia needs to get a handle on this but some of these engine problems have been going on for 10 years . I may not get a stinger. I know most vehicles have some inherent problems but engine fires and engine failures across the board are pretty serious. Some of the engine failures seem to come around 30,000 miles. Yes they have a long warranty and they may need it, but who wants to keep getting their car fixed, will you get a loaner for these repairs?

Looks like 2 Stingers caught fire in US so far..

I also received the letter today.. It says they still don't have a solution yet.. which seems very strange to me.
because they said only the Stingers produced between June 21 2018 to July 9 2019 are affected..
I strongly believe they can simply replace faulty HECU produced during that period to the ones that are not produced during that period...

will you get a loaner for these repairs?

HAHA good luck. I had been to shop around 10 times and I got a loner car 2 times. Kia Sportage once and Nissan Versa once...
My dealership always said they were out of loaner cars because of engine recalls on other Kia vehicles and I totally get it after getting that recall letter.
I also called Kia corporate to help me out because I was about to get stranded, and they said they will reimburse up to $35/day. what a jokesters.

Got mine too.

the fix may end up only taking a couple of hours. let's see what they come up with. a loaner for a big-ish recall isn't realistic...no matter the brand.

I just received this letter too for my 2019 Stinger GT2. This car sits a lot right now, I think it's going to be sitting much more now until KIA figures out a remediation for my said car catching on fire. This is very disappointing! I previously owned a 2006 Lexus IS350 and the main fuel supply tube sprung a leak at the O-ring connector and almost caught fire, so things happen even with the best car makers. I hope KIA can fast track this because I honestly love this car and don't wish to see it go up into flames!EA1D9C09-7AE3-4076-A2AD-15C1A049F630.webp

Loaner? Ha good luck with that! I miss going to the Lexus dealer when I owned my IS350! KIA dealers are low budget and basically treat you like you are driving a YUGO. It's ridiculous!

Thanks for starting this post Xdizzy98,

I got my letter on Saturday, freaked me out cause I had a burning smell coming from the engine a few weeks back, I posted it on here, nothing was caught on fire and I assumed it was from a recent oil change I had, but then yesterday I had the fan on with open vent, it was really warm in NY yesterday and a funny smell was blowing into the cabin. I figured it was from my new intake. Then I opened the hood and noticed on the intake line a yellow plastic wrap, with Korean characters was chard so I'm now guessing the burning smell is from that I hope.
I only have 1771 Miles on the car. I bought it when Covid started so not much driving really.
If Kia says that the fire might be coming from the HECU, does anyone know where that is? I want to keep an eye on it after every time I drive.

U guys are looking at this wrong...

let the car burst into flames.

if you survive, u get $$$$$$
To the survival issue, let's all put a cheap smoke detector under the hood.

If the fix isn't widely available by June, I may just let my 2-year-lease expire (meant to buy it out, but decided to just ride it out after a couple of months). Maybe there is something to BMW service after all - seeing so many reports of bad service here.. I expect the need for service will only increase as the car ages..
