Seeking How To How daunting is the work for lowering springs?

So am I understanding this correctly? The driveshafts on the front wont pop out at all doing this install? They just add resistance?

I read in the FB group of a drive shaft coming out and it was a pain to reinstall. Mine didn't, they just added resistance and it makes it really tight to get the strut assembly out. I had to compress the spring a lot while it was still on the car in order to get enough clearance in the wheel well and fender to get it out.

We did NOT cut the boot (whateveritiscalled) seen at 2:20. I have heard some people do, we decided not to. How do they know how much to cut off?

After install was complete:

I would say she has dropped maybe another quarter of an inch (probably over estimating a bit) since Saturday's install.
Looks great!

My passenger axle came out and actually got damaged enought that I need to replace it. One more reason to have it done at a garage. The axle shaft is roughly 1k for part and time.

Damn dude, like damaged at the boot or the splines? I'm still going to attempt it myself but I'll start with the front and if it turns out to be too much ill reassemble and have it installed at a shop.

the damage is at the splines, I run in rwd now until I can source a used one. It jumps quite a bit under load.

How badly damaged? If you dropped it and boogered up a spline, just file off the burr and reinstall.

I dont want to mess with that, as I said the cv is jumping under load. It create a noticeable shake. I will source a good one and just swap it. The car doesnt even have 10 000 kms on it yet.

I got these spring compressors so I think ill be good for clearance. I'm worried about if the axle comes out, will I lose tranny fluid?

Those compressors will make the job so much easier. I wish I had them.

You push down on the axles and they have lots of give to them. You won’t lose fluid if they come out. I think you’d have to really pull on them for them to separate.

Ouch!! Those self inflicted wounds hurt the most.

Im really struggling getting the springs compressed enough so I can install the tophat. Should I install the tophat first by itself back on the vehicle, and then compress the springs as I move the assembly into place or does it need to be all together?

Assemble the strut outside the car. I needed a 3rd compressor to get the top hat on

Thanks, took me four hours but I did the passenger front; gad damn I'm sore. Should take me wayyy less time to do the front driver side and the rears should be cake. My jack is the mvp for holding up the assembly while I guided it in.

Just another question, googling didn't help me. The inner CV joint feels like it came out but it slid right back in. Is this ok?

You will find out when you drive it... if its bind on hard pull like mine it will fell like a crazy unbalanced wheel. I hope yours is fine.

Thanks for the help everyone, its all done. No issues with pulling feels just the same as before but with less body roll and somehow a smoother ride. 4 hours for the front right, 4 hours the other 3 wheels. If you know what you're doing this could take four hours if everything went perfectly.

I'm still on the fence with doing this. On one hand I like to do things myself and save myself hundreds of dollars from the mechanic. Then the thought of having my car up on jack stands in my apartment parking lot doesn't seem like the best haha. Once I start traveling for work again and start bringing in some overtime I'll definitely help with that decision.
