Has anyone lit up the red strip between the rear tail lights? (quick photoshop)

^ I'm certain au models don't have that side light. But I never really looked for it either.

Hahaha, contrary to what some people may think it does get dark down here occasionally...;)

I have a car wrecker near me that has a front smashed stinger in the yard. I might see how much they want for the rear light assembly and look at building this. Would be one of a kind. I am all for that haha. I think it would be great as a 3rd break like rather than the strip on the top of the rear window and probably cost the same, Just take more time to customer build it. Will let you know if I do it.

I've heard multiple reviewers lament the fact that the rear brake lights do not light up full width, despite the clear red strip running across the back.

I've been scouring the net looking for a mod kit (no stinger yet, but fingers crossed, planning ahead :D) and can't find anything, my google-fu is failing me.

It seems like a trivial DIY job, the wiring is already in the rear hatch for the stock lights, and the clear red strip is already there, you just have to remove it, add a light strip, and splice the power from the existing wiring.

I did a quick shop job, looks killer, especially at night:

I know SOMEONE must have done it by now, just looking for the link/kit.

Must be something in the air, I thought of the same thing a week or so ago! Definitely going to give it a crack eventually, just having a hard time finding a continuous led beam that's 65ishcm long to fit in the housing. Only found longer and shorter so far. When I eventually get around to it I'll post.

I’ve always thought since buying the car that it should be lit as a third brake light, or an option to have it on as a tail light. Would be interesting to see what it looks like if anyone does actually get it done.

And have it flash at random intervals for maximum annoyance :)

I do get the desire to "fancy up" the car, but lately, I am seeing more and more "light pollution". If you're going to blind people from behind (for example, by driving with high beams on) or mess with their night vision by blinding them with 5000 lumens brake lights / rear marker lights, don't be surprised if people suddenly slow down when you're behind them, or if they hit you from behind because you totally messed with their vision. Pretty sure there are maximum light levels for day/night front/rear of the car - be careful you don't exceed them, because then it's your fault..

Not saying you shouldn't "have fun", but light is a tricky thing - too much at night, especially when unexpected, can be very tricky. You wouldn't want to cause any accidents due to blinding people with super bright light at night, such as a 3rd brake light that is way brighter than your regular lights.

I'm not saying to use Cree XHP50's in there that would melt your eyes out. I'd just use the same brightness as the third brake light as mentioned in posts. I don't know if the factory third brake light has a hard board or flexible strip inside, but if it's a strip, then it might be possible to dissect it and use it between the brake lights.

If it's a hard board, then it might be a bit harder to do because of the curvature of the back window and the space between the brake lights looks relatively straight.. It might even be possible to heat and straighten the hard board to fit too.

It's just a thought and if you could find a salvage car and get the third brake light cheap enough, then it might be worth a shot to try.

Just kind of thinking out loud here for those that like to experiment with stuff.

Hey guys, getting ready for a wrap. I know i can wrap without but I’d like to remove the center reflector along with the tail lights. Tail lights are easy breezy but looking for advice on removing the center piece. Looks like access to a few nuts behind the two access panels on the trim...is this all there is or does the entire hatch trim have to come off? Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks

It's covered in the instructions for changing out the reverse lights for LED. Just 3 nuts on each side, iirc.

Thanks for the quick response. We are talking about the center piece not the tail lights, right? I’ll dig around for the instructions. Thanks again

It's posted above, in this thread.

It's all one piece and easy to remove.
