Thanks for the info. You’re referring to wrapping the tail pipe as seen in this video? I see the wrap has been clamped around the tail pipe to prevent movement of wrap and tail pipe. Given the movement of the muffler translates into the tail pipe putting pressure on the wrap has that created any wiggle room between tail pipe, wrap and tip?

Yes that is the fix. Several people on here have done it and I haven’t heard of any issues. I actually recently removed the mufflers to paint the tips and they were still nice and tight. Strange though..my muffler doesn’t move much at all. Verrrry slight wiggle maybe. No issues with the wrap though. Give it a shot...not much to loose.

I was in the same boat as you when I installed my Borla. Was on the verge off going back to stock and selling it. I decided to add sound proofing material to the trunk and this helped considerably. Then I did the "drone fix" talked about extensively on this forum by wrapping the muffler with muffler wrap and tucking it into the back of the tips to fill in the gap and clamping it all down. These 2 things eliminated 90% of the drone and cabin noise. Now I absolutely love it.

What wrap and clamp did you use? I have MBRP installed and the drone is pretty bad at 2000-2500 rpm.

thats because the MBRP mufflers dont have tips so your mufflers are reverting the sound under the trunk.

Just finished reading through the entire thread after having My brand new Borla installed on Monday at a muffler shop. Mechanic mentioned the exhaust was off kilter so he ended up adding a coupe of welds.

I purchased the round akrapovic tips to help with drone, but the mechanic didn’t feel comfortable about shaving the diffuser to get these to fit. He showed me how much play there is with the muffler (when pushing on it which will occur when going over speed bumps and bumps in the road in general) and said that would translate to the tips rubbing against the diffuser. From what folks have said, that is occurring and leading to vibrations. I’ve put a 100 miles on the car with the Borla and the in cabin noise (whatever you want to call it) is unbearable. I want to significantly reduce drone without cutting the car and I don’t want tips to rub and lead to vibrations.

As I see it, here are my options:

1) go back to stock, sell Borla and take a big hit

2) install round tips by cutting diffuser, tips will most likely rub with the diffuser given the movement of the muffler and cause vibrations
-modification here would be to have the rear pipe welded to prevent movement as one user mentioned, however I’m curious if that would impact the exhaust sound

3) purchase oval tips and install without cutting diffuser, but again because of muffler movement rubbing and vibrations may occur and my only option to address would be welding test pipe

4) wear earplugs. LOL

Feedback is appreciated. Did I miss any other options?

a few folks here have slightly trimmed the diffuser to fit the akropovic tips and didn't have any vibrations or rubbing on the diffuser. I went with a welded tip because I wanted something slightly bigger/round than the akropovics and trimmed my diffuser. No vibrations or rubbing. A lot of muffler shops just aren't equipped with the proper tools for trimming. I went to a muffler shop that routinely does custom work, but had gone to two "regular" muffler shops prior and they told me they didn't have the tools (hence being uncomfortable, they told me the same thing they told you).

I didn't do it, the shop did it for me. I think somewhere in this thread one of the members shares what he used.

Thanks. Do you have the Borla S-Type exhaust? As you can see from my pics the tail pipe doesn’t even extend into the tips, therefore the sound emits into the cabin via the hatch and underbody. Do your tail pipe extend into the tips?

Are these the Oval Akrapovic tips you’ve installed? These appear to be the same size as the OEM tips therefore they should fit perfectly, but if I understand your correctly the tail pipe is not centered in the OEM tips therefore when the Akrapovic tips were installed the tips are favoring one side of the diffuser more than the other and therefore rubbing? Did you go back to the muffler shop or check yourself if the tail pipe can be exactly centered?


I was hoping no cutting of the diffuser necessary with these given their size matches the OEM tips, but no I’m hearing this Weill seems upon whether the tail pipe can be centered in the tip opening. Has anyone confirmed that the tail pipe can be centered with our cars?

Mine aren’t close to centered and I don’t think they can be because the difference between the tail pipes doesn’t match the distance between the two tips. So it appears unless one wants to the trim the diffuser which I would prefer not to have done the best option would be to wrap the tips as other members have done assuming I can move the exhaust back an inch or two to get the pipe more into the tip.

Yes - these are the smaller ovals, 75x105mm. They are the same size (or at least very close) as the OEM tips.

You understand correctly. The tips my Borla exhaust system are not lining up perfectly centered on the openings in the diffuser, which causes the Akrapovic tips to rub the diffuser slightly. The OEM tips, being separately mounted on the diffuser, have such a large clearance between the exhaust pipe and themselves, that perfect centering is not a concern.

Did you go back to the muffler shop or check yourself if the tail pipe can be exactly centered?

Oh yeah. When I installed the tips I had to drop the muffler anyway to remove the OEM tips from the bumper. I definitely wrestled with the mufflers; tightening, loosening, wiggling; for a bit to get the fit as close as possible, but couldn't get PERFECT. So it still slightly rubs, but wondering if that is enough to cause vibrations.

I can post a pic of the rubbing for context. It's only really visible when the car is warmed up because of how the pipes expand. I've even gone as far as to bring home and measure the tip body temperatures with a thermal camera. The two wall construction stays cool enough that there's no risk of melting the ABS, which is somewhat comforting.

What paint did you use?

Sanded the tips the applied 3 coats of the high temp engine paint followed by 2 coats of clear.

Yes removed the mufflers and the tips. Sanded the tips and applied 3 coats of the high temp engine paint followed by 2 coats of clear. Turned out great I think!

I have thermal, but same story - the muffler end tips don't extend into the faux tips attached to the diffuser. This is likely why you're hearing the drone and why I did the trim and custom tips. When I did the tips, the drone was about 75% eliminated. I still get a little bit, but it's now bearable whereas previously my wife couldn't hear what I was saying. I also did not want to do the trimming, but I ended up liking the way it is when trimmed. Of course when I tuned the ecu more air was being pushed out so it did get a bit louder again, but still better than before.

You could just bend the end piping a little to center. For mine, I was able to tweak the hangar a little bit to get it more center

I’m not a huge fan of shiny chrome so it’s aesthetic mod. I blacked out the door chrome trim as well.
