Engine Lifter Noise

It's our thermo fan still running seconds after shut down ........ Nothing to worry about.

Just let anyone around know it's the wild turbo shutting down .....

Very interesting good information. On the extended warranty that they offer you bumper-to-bumper 100,000 miles 10 years, The only thing it seems that you have to pay for are tires brakes and adjustments. Adjustments never thought about valve adjustments, just figured that would have bin alignment . Thanks again for the info keep up the good work have a great day .

Do all Stingers have a very loud, What I believe is lifter noise, on cold starts? Mine does. It last 30 seconds to a minute and sound like a diesel truck. It's quiet on warm starts. Kind of embarrassing considering what I paid for the car. DOn't hear it in an Audi S5 Sportback. I understand the noise happens because kia uses solid lifters instead of the hydraulic lifters like most manufacturers? Anyone know have this same issue and can confirm the cause? I went to the dealer and they said it was normal. I had them cold start a new one siting on the lot and it sounded the same.

Mine does the same thing my optima never made this noise

Your optima didn’t do it because it’s not a 3.3 this is a normal noise on cold start it’s a combination of both the high pressure fuel pump and the engine trying to get oil pressure built up if you go sit in any cadenza model they do the same thing kia has deemed this a normal noise in the 3.3 motors

May I add. The cold start noise that you may be referring too might be caused by the high pressure fuel pump located on the left side of the v6

Mine is noticeably loud on cold start. And has been confirmed by my dealer as the source of the noise. It even has a sound cover over it.

Very similar to this

Good post, sounds just like mine in the morning.

Same tapping sounds here...sounds like a clearance issue...very loud! Goes away after 20 to 30 seconds but is back if the engine is turned off right after the tapping disappears. At my first service I spoke to my Stinger certified tech. He was very helpful and will check things out, keep the car overnight to make a recording of a cold start and send it to Kia. He said if the buckets are out of spec the engine has to be basically removed to fix this. He heard from other techs that the drivers side buckets on some engines are out of spec.
I'll know more in a few weeks when I leave my Stinger at the dealership while on vacation.
I'll be back then with an update.

Your car is fine buddy. Put an exhaust on and you won’t hear it anymore
Good thinking! I agree and am not too worried...the tapping shouldn't be there but it does go away consistently and my car is a long distance car...about 4 to 5k per month, so the engine never cools down really unless parked at night. Just want to make sure there is nothing wrong with it as I plan to put 200k on this engine.

This clattering is an unfortunate by-product of direct injection. Annoys me on every DI car, not just the Stinger.

Agreed. All direct injection engine make this clattering/ticking sound. It's certainly normal and sometimes the only sound that stands out at idle or when you are parked next to some wall. This is not what the issue is with the engines that have the startup noise of a very loud, metal on metal tapping sound that goes away within 30 seconds or so, after the oil flow around the valve train has been established. There is definitely something out of spec. The question as an owner is whether this will become a serious issue after the power train warranty is up? I'm not going to be a guinea-pig and want this fixed. It's embarrassing to cold start this engine in front of a potential buyer should I want to sell this car. Try to explain that kind of noise away!
Anyway...love the car and engine past this issue...plus my blue paint is chipping like crazy on the aluminum panels but that's something for another thread.
Thank you all for posting your experience with the startup noise.

Really?! When I was a GM-Subaru-BMW service manager waaaay back in the '80's the Subarus had solid lifters. A real PITA because people would forget or just not bring them in for adjustment. An unnecessary expense in these days of hydraulics. I can't believe the lifters are solid.....
Yes Kia only did it to the Stinger and requires Valve adjustment every 60k. At 7500 miles they already sound like they need adjustment. Working also in the industry they should not clatter if adjusted correctly.

They are checked at 60K, not necessarily adjusted. Use good oil, service frequently and avoid high RPMs until the engine is warmed up.

I may have exercised a little dickbaggery and am replying to this thread without reading all the replies, but the lifter tick especially when cold is quite a bit more obnoxious than it should be. Not to be mixed up with the high pressure fuel pump up front that makes the more "fast ticking" noise. The lifter tick is distinctly "harder", and it is quite a bit louder than I think should be considered normal prior to scheduled service adjustment.

Just my $0.02.

The 3.3T does not have hydraulic lifters. It is typical. Go listen to another Stinger on the dealer's lot and compare. You might have a problem, but not likely.

Hi guys,

I have exactly the same issue. However, it doesn't last for 20-30 seconds. Maybe 5 seconds, As soon as I speed up a little, the noise is gone, and it's gone for a whole day.

The thing is, I didn't have this noise for almost a year and it has just started two months ago. Therefore, it can't be normal, as many of your dealers said. I'm taking my car to service on Wednesday so I'll let you know what they said.

Cheers

Run MotorKote in it. solves the cold start issue and its VERY good for your car. I run it in all my cars especially in my older jeeps I have that have pushrods and now all my cars on cold starts are super smooth and quiet. Give it a try!Motorkote.webp

How does the engine oil affect the sound of the fuel pump/injectors?

Did you get any response on what is causing it? I have the same issue as I've had the car for almost 10 months and didn't hear this noise until recently.
