Door Frame Ticking / Squeaking Elimination

In my case I felt like the noise was coming from the point where the foam was glued to the headliner. I could hear it ticking when I shaked the headliner a bit while I had it pulled down. So in addition to wrapping it with felt tape, I also removed it and remounted it with double sided tape. I think it's still not as quiet as when I has the foam block removed entirely though.

Except mine is on the right. So in both cases it is on the passenger side, though...

My current biggest problem is that the constant ticking I now get is related to the sunroof fabric panel cover. If the cover is closed, silence. If it is open, constant ticking from what seems like all around the perimeter of the roof opening. I am willing to try to figure-out if some of the noise is coming from the grab handle area, but there is definitely ticking all around. I believe that I have had a separate noise coming from the grab handle area--but that is affected by temperature change after the car has been out in the sun and everything is hot. Since it is winter here, I haven't heard that one for a while.

This is from another forum, posted byluv2drive. Perhaps, give it a try:--

This issue for me has been resolved. Here is the fix. I have a 2019 GT1.

-----------
Pushing up around the edge of the headliner all around the sunroof glass. I used the palm of my hand and gave a solid push all the way around. In two spots I felt and heard a "click".... you could feel the Velcro strips connecting better. Drove the car and now it is quite...not a single creek from up top. This is definitely the issue since I could reproduce the noise every day during normal driving. It has been a few days now and the noise is completely gone. I did let the dealership know what the fix is for future reference for others.

Had the car at two dealerships and neither could fix issue. They tighten all the bolts on the rails... grease the rails and told me they could not fix issue without ripping apart sunroof. I called them today and told them the fix for their records.

All that said, for all those that are hearing a plastic type crinkle sound from above your head.... not a rattle of metal.... and if you open sun shade or glass or tilt glass and non of that makes the sound go away....then most likely your fix is a 30 second push of the headliner where it meets the opening (all around) listening and feeling for a "click" sound is all all you need to do.

It was definately rubbing on the body. Pulled it off and now I have silence like I've not had before. I guess only time will tell, but this time I do feel I've nailed it!!! Pictures here....

That's damn it! Done a thick slice through that foam piece and it solved the problem

Been a month now since I removed the foam. Have had no ticking noises up until a couple of days ago which went away after I applied some Shinetsu around sunroof edges and door seal. So, going good now!

...another foamy culprit! For some reason this week another ticking noise started, just like the old one. OMG!
Pressed up on headliner above passenger sunvisor and it stopped. Could it be another piece of foam playing up?...Well, yes apparently so. Don't know why it suddenly kicked off...colder weather? age? dunno. The culprit was exactly the same type of foam in middle of headliner. Unscrewed the insect cover and removed the metal plate (really easy) to expose the foam. Wrapped it up with tape and replaced. All well again. Will this ever end?!?!?! picture here. Not very clever it being placed against the plastic frame like that!

@BarryT

What's the latest? Is the ticking still gone?

I've removed the white foam piece from the driver side, passenger side, and under the sunroof insect deflector and I still get terrible ticking/squeaking after the car sits in the sun for bit and it's hot out.

I've also tried pressing hard up against the headliner in various places all around, and it doesn't help. I don't hear any Velcro engaging like some here suggest.

Could the ticking be coming from the door seals? I don't think it is, as it sounds like it's coming from inside the headliner, but I know acoustics in vehicles can be deceiving sometimes, and I'm not sure what else it can be. I've also tried removing the grab handle and it didn't help.

Did you do the sunroof Torx bolt procedure yet? If not, look that up. I think there are cars with multiple issues...some will have every one :(

Yeah, I did that. That solved my sunroof rattle, thankfully, but didn't do anything for my headliner ticking.

We can add each other the list of ones who have every problem. Glad the sunroof rattle fix worked for you, though! Did you realign the roof a small amount, or just loosen and re-tighten? And which bolts? There more we know about what works and doesn't work, the sooner others can have some peace and quiet.

I loosed the front and middle bolts on both sides, opened and closed fully, then opened about 50% and tightened at their natural position. I can still reproduce the noise faintly by pushing on the sunroof, but I don't hear it anymore while driving, so I'll take that.

I also have a gnarly rattle coming from somewhere directly in front of me. This one comes and goes based on the road conditions. I've tried addressing it by following this thread, but to no avail: Rattle from Inside Steering Wheel (solved)
I can't really tell if mine is coming from inside the steering wheel. My first thought was that it was somewhere under the dash or behind the instrument cluster, but after finding that thread I figured I'd give it a shot.

It's more than likely in the dash somewhere or the instrument cluster. My wife's car has a super-annoying temperature-related rattle in the IC. I have had a very occasional rattle from the dash in the Stinger, but the sunroof and door frame noises are the ones that drive you crazy because they are so frequent or even constant.

Good luck!

I guess I should try the fix in the first post. I just don’t know if it’s the same thing that I’m experiencing. It really sounds like it’s coming from the headliner and not the door frame, and it sounds more like a friction sound than an impact sound. At this point, it’s probably worth a shot.

In my case I was sure that the noise was coming from the headliner, but I did follow all the fixes from the first post at the beginning of my search. None of those things worked for me. Broke a couple of those seal clips on the way, so be careful of that!
One other suggestion is that I also found some small black foam blocks hidden under the sunroof rails that you can just about get to by poking through the gaps in the rail. That stuff really changes when the rails heat up in the sun - you might try ripping that stuff out. When I first saw those I thought that was the issue as they were definately more 'sticky' in the heat, but for me it was the white foam blocks.

Keep at it! it's worth the effort!

I'm really hoping someone experienced can just take down the entire headliner and post a wiki/video on how to do that without breaking anything. I suspect there are white foam blocks everywhere. I'd love to wrap them all in felt.

I am disappointed to say the OP's solution in the first post did not solve my ticking. I've also removed the three white foam blocks.

I now have the Honda gasket lube being delivered next week. I don't have much hope in that either. Not sure what else to try.

It kind of sounds like it might be coming from behind the B-Pillar cover. The source of the sound seems very close to my left ear, which is inches away from the B-Pillar in my normal driving position. It only happens after the car has been sitting on the hot sun for a while, and it ticks with the chassis flexing on impacts or undulations. Could there be more foam blocks under there that I can't see merely by removing the door gasket?

Same issue here and I also got the Honda Silicone Grease to try but not sure how much it will help.

The part that believe is making the noise is plastic and I'm not sure how the grease is going to help. After the part is heated up and then starts cooling down, it ticks so loudly right next to my ear and can be replicated by pushing up on it as well. Only after 10 minutes or so does it stop.

Not having a garage sucks.

The Honda grease did nothing in my car :(

Be cautious if removing door gaskets. The plastic pins that hold them in place are fairly fragile. I broke 2, although breaking them was not a source of any of my rattles since I insulted them with double side tape & foam.
