Door Frame Ticking / Squeaking Elimination

This morning's ride at about 45F/7C was pretty quiet again. But this damn ticking noise has gotten into my head and I'm pretty sure I'm now inventing noises.

If the sticker really was the culprit then I don't even know whether to feel good or bad at this point. This noise has really made the first month of ownership annoying, and I was hoping for a more dramatic fix :)

If it makes you feel better, I am exactly the same. Ticking noise, as it was, has gone and I am feeling good about it...but I am kindof on edge whenever I hear the slightest noise that it's coming back again!! Really need to get over this, there are more important things to think about like all the people suffering from our devastating bush fires. Perspective.

OK, so after 4 days the exact same ticking came back!! Pushing up on headliner stopped it as before. With enthusiam significantly draining, I had another look to see if there were any hidden sticky labels (!) in between the sunroof and the headliner (there's a small gap to peer through) . Noticed a couple of small hardish foam blocks, 2-3cms long. these were a bit sticky in the warmer weather. So picked away at them and got rid of them (they don't exist on the driver side).
Also, forgot to mention earlier that when it was checked out at the dealer, they removed the foam that was there at the front of the sunroof mechanism. This foam also seemed to change hardness and stickiness with the heat/cool.
Seems OK now. (yeah, right!)
Just posting this 'cos it seems like my initial fix wasn't the solution.
Let's see.!!!

That might explain why since we've entered winter temps here in Canada, I don't hear noises anymore. I suspect that they might come back in spring time ? I hope not.

Ack! Good luck.

Mine has stayed quiet but I wouldn't be surprised if it came back because (as your case seems to show) it's likely that simply bringing down the headliner a bit and re-raising it is squashing the noise temporarily. I was thinking of using a stethoscope to better locate the source when it returns. In my case at least, the noise was tricky and depending on which way I turned my head it "moved". I initially thought it was coming from the door and only realized it was overhead when I happened to try pressing on the headliner. I've learned not to trust my ears as I've had noises in previous cars that ended up being produced in completely opposite directions than where my ears were pointing me to.

I recently took an Uber in Mexico City , it was a new E3 series , silent engine , no radio and driving over the pot hole infested streets ..................you would have smiled at the creaks and ticks coming from this car .............my son looked at me and laughed when we got out at our hotel ...................it was worse than my car prior to the sunroof frame being replaced ................

:oops::unsure:

Is there such a thing as a new BMW E3 ?

Given that "E" and "3" are right next to each other on a keyboard, the only logical conclusion is that it's the new 2-door-electric-7-Series-SUV-Coupe-Sportback.

With M Sport.

Nope , E= Electric , 330 BMW E .................bucket of bolts !!

Sorry to be a bore on this, but I think I've had a Eureka event. Ticking came back again. Like you, it goes when pushing up headliner. But noticed that it stayed away longer when I pressed closer to B pillar. So I ripped the seal off (again) and managed to simulate for the first time a like sounding noise by pushing on a useless piece of foam right in the corner above the B pillar. It was definately rubbing on the body. Pulled it off and now I have silence like I've not had before. I guess only time will tell, but this time I do feel I've nailed it!!! Pictures here....

So what is that foam supposed to be supporting...or preventing? From your pic it is kind of difficult to tell. Would putting some of that special tape on the top and bottom of it get rid of the squeak/tick, but still maintain the filler functionality? Or is this something KIA should have never put in there in the first place?

It appears to be a space filler - just to maintain distance of headliner to the roof . Yes, perhaps a safer thing to do would be to have taped over it where it touches the metal. The bottom is glued to the softer foam so probably over the top would have sufficed. If this is the true cause and the ticking stays away, I may tape it up and put it back.
I have no idea if Kia shouldn't have put it there in the first place. I assume it must have some purpose (maybe just at manufacturing stage to help fitting the seal?).

If it maintains the distance from the headliner to the roof, then that would be the purpose. Wait to see if it fixes the noise before putting it back in!! I am sure you can avoid punching that part of the headliner until you do. Unless of course the noise comes back even with the foam out and you get momentarily angry ;)

I have been trying to find a solution for the noise on the passenger door when going over 65 mph (of course I could stop at 60 mph but who would do that with the Stinger? :sneaky:).

I have a rattle kind of noise going over 65 mph that gets louder and more consistent as the speed goes up. You can hear it here (sorry for the road noise):

It seems that the noise is coming from the top corner of the passenger door close to the B pillar (between front and read door).

I already took it to the dealer and of course they said they couldn't find it. Any suggestion on how to fix it?

Thanks!

The Stinger has been out for 3 years and you would think Kia would have all the problems ironed out by now.

I’ve had my 2020 GT for 6 weeks now and have a list of issues. Kia customer service is almost non existent so I have started trouble shooting myself and have found a solution for some of these problems which may help others.

1) Wind noise from drivers door/B pillar above 60kmh (identical to CFL Stingers video above).
2) Intermittent rattle from HUD.
3) Scratches on gloss black roof rail from delivery.
4) Spark plugs replaced at 2500km.
5) Transmission slipping, feels like your riding a wild bucking horse at times. Initially Kia tried to tell me there’s nothing wrong until I took them for a drive myself. Booked in in a couple of days to have this looked at.

Dealer tried to tell me it was the sunroof rattle and wanted to pull the whole roof lining out. I went exploring further the myself and found that it was the chrome trim at the top of the door. I could replicate the sound by tapping gently on this piece.

You can very gently pry a small gap between the rubber at the top and bottom of this chrome trim. Be careful as the chrome will scratch very easily. I initially used a butter knife wrapped in a soft cloth.

I then inserted small strips of 1mm thick double sided stick on foam. I was able too gently push a few of these in along the top and bottom of the chrome strip using a small screwdriver. Once tucked in it cannot be seen at all and the rubber strip sits back normally.

For me this has fixed the wind noise problem 100%

For the HUD rattle I used the same tape cut to size but left the backing on one side of the tape. Again I used the same butter knife wrapped in a soft cloth, gently pry up one of the corners of the HUD and the 3 clips with pop out.

Again this has eliminated the HUD rattle for me 100%

This was my spark plugs after 2500km. With socket extensions and the 3/8 and 1/4 elbows they weren’t too bad to change out.

Welcome! You have demonstrated how to join a car forum! Good information for those having issues. I know I'd be grateful for it (if I needed solutions, which I don't, lucky me).
